Courting a potential presidential veto, the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee voted on Wednesday to require the Pentagon to change the names of any military base named after a Confederate general.Lawmakers approved the amendment, introduced by failed 2020 Democrat presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren, to the National Defense Authorization Act by voice vote during a closed-door meeting.The panel apparently has yet to make an official statement, however, although Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) announced that he voted against it. “I opposed this amendment, spoke against it, and voted no in the committee. Congress should not be mandating renaming of our bases and military installations,” he tweeted.

United States District Court Judge Jed Rakoff ruled on Wednesday that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) must not arrest criminal illegal aliens as they are leaving court in New York. He wrote:

Twitter announced Thursday that it deleted more than 170,000 accounts associated with Chinse state-linked misinformation campaigns. The social media company published an archive of 32,242 accounts related to state-linked information operations including three attributed to China, Russia and Turkey, adding that data from the accounts was shared with the Australian Strategic Policy Institute and Stanford Internet Observatory. "Every account and piece of content associated with these operations has been permanently removed from the service," (snip). 23,750 accounts that comprised the core of the Chinese network were included in the archive, while 150,000 accounts designed to boost their content were removed but not added to the archive.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who on Wednesday demanded the removal of Confederate statues occupying the U.S. Capitol, has remained silent on her father’s role in overseeing the dedication of the Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee Monument while serving as Baltimore’s mayor in 1948.

The city of Jacksonville, Florida, will serve as the host city to “celebrate President Trump’s acceptance of nomination,” Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel announced on Thursday.
While the RNC’s Executive Committee voted unanimously to allow the “official business” of the convention to occur in Charlotte, North Carolina, the celebration of Trump’s nomination has been moved to Jacksonville due to North Carolina’s current coronavirus restrictions.
“The selection of Jacksonville comes after Governor Roy Cooper refused to provide assurances that this celebration could occur in Charlotte, North Carolina,” the press release stated.
“We are thrilled to celebrate this momentous occasion in the great city of Jacksonville,” McDaniel said in a statement.
Splash Mountain, one of Disney’s most beloved rides at Walt Disney World in Florida, Tokyo Disneyland, and at Disneyland in California, is being criticized by social media users and Change.org supporters who say the ride’s racial overtones need to be “re-themed.”
The ride is based on the 1946 Disney film Song of the South, featuring characters such as Brer Rabbit, Brer Bear, and Brer Fox, and has been widely criticized for its depiction of blacks and romanticized view of the post-Civil War South.
The animated characters are best known for their appearance in the song “Zip-a-dee-doo-dah.”

There will be no opting out of the Black Lives Matter movement. You’re either for BLM or against it—and if you’re against it, you’re a racist. Authorities on Wednesday confirmed they uncovered two sets of children's remains at an Idaho man's home as they investigated the disappearance of his new wife's two kids. The case has drawn global attention, in part due to links to two other mysterious deaths and the couple's doomsday beliefs.

Ecuador is facing one of its worst ever economic crises this year according to the Central Bank of Ecuador (ECB). The graffiti on the Lincoln Memorial and World War II Memorial has received the most attention, but a total of 12 statues and memorials were defaced by vandals during recent rioting that spread to the National Mall, according to the National Park Service. On Wednesday, NASCAR announced that the Confederate flag would no longer be allowed at events. This news came days after the professional racing organization’s only African American driver Darrell “Bubba” Wallace said NASCAR had “reached out” and had been “stepping up to the plate and delivering in a huge way.”
NASCAR said in a statement, “The presence of the Confederate flag at NASCAR events runs contrary to our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans, our competitors, and our industry.”
CONCORD — Amid a crossfire of accusations about questionable timing, the Democratic-led Executive Council on Wednesday rejected Gov. Chris Sununu’s historic choice of a black businessman for the state Board of Education. Sununu said the 3-2 vote against Ryan Terrell of Nashua “shocked” him. “Of all times to now potentially reject a candidate like this, I am shocked ... I don’t know a better way to say it,” Sununu said.

Protesters are criticizing the mayor of a Union County township for saying he was “pro-Black for all the good Black people” that he knew during a demonstration against social injustice Saturday. In the video provided to NJ Advance Media by protester Reid Alexander Ranalli, several demonstrators during a protest in Clark Township asked Clark Mayor Sal Bonaccorso if he would declare that he was “pro-Black.” “I am pro-Black for all the good Black people that I know in my life,” Bonaccorso responded.(Snip)

Republican Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton placed advertisements in the New York Times a week after the publication of his op-ed caused chaos at the paper. The Senator’s Political Action Committee put advertisements on the newspaper’s website attacking presumptive Democratic Presidential Nominee Joe Biden, according to the Washington Free Beacon. A banner advertisement read “Joe Biden fails the test.”
A top adviser to the Senator told the Free Beacon that “while we were concerned that the woke mob would stifle debate, it’s admirable that the New York Times will run these ads from Senator Cotton’s PAC.”
On Monday, congressional Democrats put on African stoles, walked to a photogenic spot at the Capitol, and knelt to show support for Black Lives Matter movement. When the photo op was over, Nancy couldn't get up. An aide rushed to help the 80-year-old woman get to her feet.

A protester has reportedly been seriously injured while pulling down a Confederate statue in Portsmouth, Virginia.
"There was a gentleman who was directly in front of the statue and when the statue finally did give way it came and fully hit him in the head," a local Black Lives Matter representative told news reporter Brett Hall.

The news out of Seattle is that Antifa has captured a seven-block area in central Seattle that they've dubbed the Capital Hill Autonomous Zone, or CHAZ for short. When the video of George Floyd’s death in police custody went viral, Gross—president of Minneapolis-based Communities United Against Police Brutality—got a call from a friend telling her to check social media.
(Snip) It has been reported widely that Chauvin faced 18 formal complaints alleging misconduct during his 19 years on the force before Floyd’s May 25 death in his custody.
Only two of the complaints resulted in a reprimand, both involving shootings by police. Several of the incidents resulted in three deaths, based on published news reports.
As antifa militants have taken over six blocks of Seattle’s Capitol Hill district, calling it the “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone” or the “People’s Republic of Capitol Hill,” Gov. Jay Inslee (D-Wash.) laughed about this open rebellion, saying he hadn’t heard about it. Inslee added that the National Guard is demobilizing, and his chief of staff suggested that even if an open rebellion had broken out on the streets of Seattle, it would be up to “local authorities” to fight it. “Passing the buck” doesn’t even begin to cover the insanity of this “response.”

“Governor, I’d like to ask you about what’s going on in Seattle. There’s this thing called the ‘Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone.’ What’s your thought about the fact that the protestors have taken that over and not allowing people to come and go freely?” one reporter asked. “Well that’s news to me,” Inslee said caught completely blindsided by what was happening in his state’s largest city.
Last fall, Idaho officials started looking into the mysterious disappearance of two children, 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow and 17-year-old Tylee Ryan, who haven’t been seen since September. In the months since they were reported missing, officials have been unable to locate the children, and the case has become increasingly convoluted.
In November, law enforcement visited the home of Lori Vallow and her husband, Chad Daybell, to perform a welfare check on JJ and Tylee, Vallow’s children who had been reported missing, according to the New York Times.

For the past week, Black Lives Matter and Antifa-affiliated activists have engaged in a pitched battle with Seattle police officers and National Guard soldiers in the neighborhood, with the heaviest conflict occurring at the intersection of 11th and Pike, where law enforcement had constructed a barricade to defend the Seattle Police East Precinct building. Hoping to break through the barricade, protesters attacked officers with bricks, bottles, rocks, and improvised explosive devices, sending some officers to the hospital. John Gleeson is the former judge tasked by Emmet Sullivan, the judge in the Michael Flynn case, with talking him into sentencing Flynn in a case that the prosecution has moved to dismiss. One wonders whether any such “talking” is required, other than for the sake of appearances.
In any event, Gleeson today filed his brief. He argues that Judge Sullivan should reject the government’s motion and continue the prosecution to sentencing, notwithstanding the prosecutor’s desire to stand down.
Gleeson had sketched out this argument in a Washington Post op-ed before Sullivan appointed him to brief the matter.

Earlier today Allahpundit wrote about the so-called Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ) which was set up in Seattle after police retreated from a few square blocks. The denizens of this new experiment in police-free living were probably envisioning a utopia full of peace and community love. Instead they got a new self-appointed police force led by a rapper named Raz Simone. Early this morning someone posted a video clip to Reddit which shows Simone and a group of people confronting a graffiti artist. Things escalate and eventually the tagger is assaulted by someone in the group and has his phone taken away.

Police and sheriff's deputies in Central California are searching for a man they say shot a deputy in the head early Wednesday and killed another man in what investigators described as an "ambush" attack on a police station.
The San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s Office said Mason James Lira, 26, opened fire at the Paso Robles Police Department before 4 a.m. Wednesday, shooting a responding deputy in the head.
The deputy's partner dragged him to safety and returned fire, San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Ian Parkinson said.
The bullet remained lodged in the deputy's head and he's in serious condition at the hospital, Parkinson said.

The US economy will shrink by 6.5% this year, the Federal Reserve has forecast, announcing it would keep interest rates close to zero into 2022. The US central bank’s moves come as the economy struggles with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. However, the Fed expects the US economy will return to growth in 2021, with unemployment falling to 9.3% and GDP increasing 5%, followed by 3.5% growth in 2022. “The ongoing public health crisis will weigh heavily on economic activity, employment, and inflation in the near term, and poses considerable risks to the economic outlook over the medium term,” it said in a statement.
