Grammy-winning country group Lady Antebellum is changing its name to Lady A, with members saying they are regretful and embarrassed for not taking into consideration the word's associations with slavery. The band, made up of Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood, made the announcement Thursday on their social media. The statement said that they chose the name after the antebellum style home where they shot their first band photos, and it reminded them of Southern styles of music. But they said in recent weeks, their eyes have been opened to 'blindspots we didn't even know existed' and 'the injustices, inequality and biases

Comments:

One can only imagine the pain this name caused to BLACK people who do not listen to country music, but whose own RAP music uses The En Word 5 or 6 times in each line.

Stupid. It means "before the war," and often refers to the time before the American Civil War. I suppose the name could be construed to mean the group wants the treatment of African-Americans to return to what it was before the Civil War. But that's stupid too. Just because your first name is Adolf, doesn't mean you're Hitler. It is a name. There was only one Adolf Hitler who gassed the Jews and murdered millions of others.

I believe antebellum means pre-war or before bedlam. I think the country has descended into madness all because a non law abiding thug was breaking the law which applies to all of us. He unfortunately lost his life during his resistance in doing so. (I would much rather have had him arrested, tried and sent to jail for 5-10 years.) Instead his death resulted in country wide destruction and mayhem. It also revealed the dark character of many we trusted, from generals to mayors and governors. It also destroyed flags, statues and other memorials. That's ok, the history cannot be denied. Statues and memorials destroyed, history remains in the hearts and minds of all God fearing Americans. All this over a thug who now rests in a solid gold casket. If this isn't madness then what is?

Sorry for seconds. Growing up in Virginia I heard "antebellum" a lot, but always in reference to things of the pre-war South, and usually in reference to the mansions of the plantation-owners or the fashions of their ladyfolk. And maybe implicitly the plantation lifestyle, itself. It's never been just the literal "before the war". To be fair, though, I don't recall the term being used a lot by southerners, but more so by the yankee carpetbaggers and travel agents booking tours of the mansions left standing or rebuilt from the time of the War Between the States.

"Antebellum" refers to the time after the Civil War when all the slaves had been freed. So I could see where the KKK (that nice Democrat organization) would be offended. So you are saying you don't want to offend hard core racists? Strange move to make, but if it floats your boat...

Amazon is reportedly considering removing the immensely popular 1970s series “The Dukes of Hazzard” from its streaming library as it reviews its content offerings in the wake of racial tensions and protests happening throughout the US.
