CLEVELAND, Ohio - Remember Sambo's? For decades, the infamously named restaurant was ubiquitous with more than 1,100 locations throughout the country. It’s down to one final restaurant, which announced it is changing its name in light of protests over the death of George Floyd. The killing of Floyd, an African-American man in Minneapolis, by the hands of police, has spurred protests across the country while sparking conversation and dialogue over race. And last week, the owners of the original Sambo's in Santa Barbara, California, announced it would change the name of its restaurant, which opened almost exactly 63 years ago.

I'm trying to remember what the majority of them became...looks a lot like the Denny's sign.

They became Carrow’s Restaurants. Owned by David Nancarrow of Santa Barbara. I knew him well.

Get your Aunt Jemima's pancake mix and syrup while you can. Store it right next to Gone With The Wind.

OP is correct. Sambo was a little boy in India who loved his beautiful clothes until the tigers threaten to eat him. He gives each tiger a piece of clothing and they get jealous and chase each other around the tree so fast that they turn into butter which his mother put on his pancakes. I always thought it must have been the most delicious butter. He was called Black Sambo because the light skinned British referred to the natives of India as "Black" it has/had nothing to do with African-American Black people.
I am really getting tired of people really believing that the earth began the day they were born. I follow a "Leave it to Beaver" page on Face Book and every day I am struck by how stupid people are today. Arguing whether Ward wouldn't allow" June to have a job, or how terrible it was that girls couldn't wear pants to school. The best? Apoplexy over kids not wearing helmets and going to the movies alone!
Judging any segment of history with a "generation whatever" 2020 mindset is so shallow and stupid.

Sambo's died because they served food that was inedible for humans.
Cockroach heaven.

There used to be a Sambo's Pancake House in Charleston, SC in the 1970s, It had jungle décor and scenes from the story as a border around the top of the dining room. It was a popular breakfast place for families when we were very young parents. I thought they got rid of all the Sambo's a long time ago.

I remember going to one off I-75 in Dayton Ohio...remember a graphic of a little colored child with a dog tugging at her pants...but man, that has been 30 or better years ago...I figured PC pressure got to them way before this....

#2 That may be true in your area, but other sources (Palm Beach Post is one) many locations were sold to Denny's in a couple of waves. California was one of the first to go bankrupt. I remembered seeing one a few decades ago in my current area and I was surprised it existed. Sure enough a couple months later I passed that location and it was a Denny's.

There's a Little Black Sambo antique cookie jar in Elizabeth Warren's kitchen; I saw it when she made that idiotic campaign video...the very same one where she said she was going to "get me a beer."

Hubby and I ate at the original Sambo’s in Santa Barbara, CA, 2 years ago when in town for a wedding. I’d never been to any but my husband, who is older than me, remembered the chain. I just googled it and 2 days ago they announced they are changing the name! I bought the little book when we were there...glad I did. So stupid. It’s a story about India! My head...exploding...get the duct tape!

Look out Chief Thunder Thud, Princess Summer Fall Winter Spring, you are about to be removed from the collective memory because today's kids can't handle the horror of it all.

The name of the restaurant had no connection to anything about black Americans or even the antique book about an Indian boy.
