Food pantries for months have relied on a government-sponsored food box program to serve a spike in needy families during the pandemic. But the latest batch of boxes includes an item some find unpalatable as the election nears: a letter signed by President Donald Trump.
The letter, printed in both English and Spanish on White House letterhead, highlights the Farmers to Families Food Box program and includes general safety information for preventing COVID-19 transmission.

Fred Gerteiny, a sports reporter, called Republican South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott an “Uncle Tom” in a now deleted tweet.

It’s very late at night here in Sandpoint, Idaho. There is a magnificent silvery blue moon casting a glittering spell on the waters of Lake Pend Oreille. I am in my dining room looking at the accumulation of mail over the past few days. Nothing good. I just get bill after bill and that’s depressing. I don’t want to pretend I’m broke, but that torrent of bills is wearing me down.
Tonight was the first debate between Mr. Joe Biden and President Donald J. Trump. To put it mildly, it was discouraging to me as a citizen and as a student of politics. Herewith a few notes on the evening.
What makes this episcopal throat-clearing notable is its source. Cardinal Timothy Dolan has good relations with politicians across the political spectrum and tries his best to foster bipartisanship and comity in tone, at least — as one should expect from faith leaders. That has its limits, however, and for Dolan that limit was exceeded in the 2017 confirmation hearing of Amy Coney Barrett. “There should be no religious tests for candidates,” Dolan noted on his SiriusXM show earlier today, and complained about attacks by Senate Democrats on Barrett’s Catholic faith during that process.
Well, how bad was it?
Was the Cacophony in Cleveland really the existentially awful event that just about everyone says it was?
Was it an “Epic Moment of National Shame” and an “Embarrassment for the Ages,” as Politico’s screaming headline put it?
Was it, as the Washington Post’s Dan Balz wrote, “an insult to the public” and “a sad example of the state of American democracy”?
And what, if anything, did we learn from the first presidential debate?
There was some substance and strategy, but most of it was drowned out by the endless interruptions.
