I wended my way up the Walgreens greeting card aisle. I stopped dead in my tracks. A card featured a cartoon image of a white man with a mullet haircut. This cartoon character wore a baseball or seed cap and a sleeveless t-shirt, a so-called "guinea T," "dago T" or "wife-beater." The very names convey class and ethnic contempt, as the New York Times points out. "Is the vilification of working-class men fair?" The Times laments, in an op-ed entitled "Are We Really Still Calling This Shirt a 'Wife Beater'?"

Sen. Tom Cotton's (R., Ark.) office will operate a campaign-style war room to help Republicans fight back against attacks on President Trump's nominee for the Supreme Court.
Cotton's "Supreme Court War Room" was launched Friday afternoon, a day before Trump is expected to announce his pick to replace the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg. His office says the project will track attacks on the nominee and provide rapid response to push back.
Cotton, who himself was on Trump's list of potential nominees, created the project due to the ferocity of recent Supreme Court fights—especially over Trump's nominees, Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.
U.S. Attorney William McSwain of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania blames Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner for the rise in violence in the City of Brotherly Love. Krasner’s policies, McSwain announced, “create a culture of lawlessness; they leave criminals emboldened; and they have inevitable consequences.” Indeed, since Krasner took office in 2018, homicides are up 49 percent and shootings have climbed by 59 percent. If the trend holds, Philadelphia will tally more than 450 homicides in 2020—the highest count in nearly 30 years.
Crime is spiking precisely because Krasner isn’t holding serious offenders accountable.
With children being shot down in the streets all across New York — a by-product of statewide double-digit increases in gun homicides — you’d think Gov. Cuomo would be too humbled to lecture Kentucky about murder.
Not so. Humble ain’t his thing, don’t you know?
Arrogance is another matter. The governor has raised that to an art form — most recently taking time out from his coronavirus-death nursing-home deflections to hector Louisville on its handling of the Breonna Taylor shooting case.
After nearly one year, questions remain unanswered about whether the Chinese coronavirus was natural or man-made and whether its release into the world was accidental or malicious.
Chinese scientist Li-Meng Yan has stirred up media attention with her claim that the coronavirus connected with COVID-19 is the result of Chinese bioengineering. She’s been saying this for a while, but the renewed attention follows a paper she and her coauthors uploaded to a public research repository. Tucker Carlson recently interviewed her on his popular Fox News show, where she went so far as to claim that Chinese authorities not only created the bug but released it on the world intentionally.
The way the Democrats are working themselves into a lather over whether President Trump will commit himself to a “peaceful transferal” of power reminds us of the moment when we first realized the New Yorker could win the 2016 election. Credit a man who looks like the undertaker but acts like the corpse for the more expressive, energetic politician picking three justices instead of one. Mitch McConnell played a 12 into a 21 after the February 2016 death of Antonin Scalia. Faced with a nominee moderate by the standards of recent justices placed on the bench by Democratic presidents, the Senate majority leader opted to block Merrick Garland on the assumption that the Republican presidential nominee would win in November 2016.

SAN FRANCISCO — California’s largest wildfire is threatening a marijuana growing enclave, and authorities said many of the locals have refused to evacuate and abandon their maturing crops even as weather forecasters predict more hot, dry and windy conditions that could fan flames.
The wildfire called the August Complex is nearing the small communities of Post Mountain and Trinity Pines, about 200 miles northwest of Sacramento, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Law enforcement officers went door to door warning of the encroaching fire danger but could not force residents to evacuate, Trinity County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Nate Trujillo said.
