Work continues to preserve pieces of art made after 2020 unrest Call it a labor of love, in a northeast Minneapolis warehouse. “I feel very attached, like connected to these pieces personally,” says Amira McLendon, a University of Minnesota art student. “I didn’t make any of them. 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS looked at city payroll records and found between 2020 and 2022, the Minneapolis Police Department had 273 officers leave their jobs. During that same three-year time period, the city hired 117 new officers, which equates to a net loss of 156 officers and an average net loss of 52 officers over the last three years. If that trend were to continue, MPD would have fewer than 400 sworn officers. As recent as 2019, MPD had about 900 sworn officers on its payroll.

Two on-duty Oakdale plainclothes police officers were told to “put their guns in the car” before they would be allowed to have lunch at Texas Roadhouse in Woodbury on Friday, according to an officer in the department who spoke to Alpha News about the incident involving his colleagues. He said the officers were first told by the hostess they were “not allowed to have weapons in the restaurant.” (snip) ”A spokesperson with Texas Roadhouse told Alpha News the 17-year-old hostess had just completed “active aggressor training” and that she “didn’t see a badge.” “She was freaked out seeing a gun,” Travis Doster said.

A man armed with 1,800 rounds of ammunition, a grenade and other explosives in his car ambushed officers who were investigating a crash, killing one and wounding two before a fourth stopped him, thwarting what authorities described as plans for further mayhem, officials said Wednesday. Mohamad Barakat, 37, shot Officers Jake Wallin, Andrew Dotas and Tyler Hawes from inside his car on Friday before they could even draw their guns.. Fargo Police say Officer Jake Wallin was killed in the line of duty on Friday, July 14. The 23-year-old was sworn in to the Fargo Police Department less than 3 months ago. He is a military veteran who served in Afghanistan. When sworn in, Chief Dave Zibolski says Wallin wanted nothing more than to serve in a position with purpose and meaning, and to truly make a difference in this community. (snip) Zibolski says Fargo Police officers were investigating routine traffic accident on 25th Street and 9th Avenue South when the suspect, 37-year-old Mohamed Barakat, started firing at officers.

Prosecutors have formally charged two people who are accused of shooting fireworks at Minneapolis police squads with officers inside the night of July Fourth. The charges were filed in connection with two separate incidents, one involving a 17-year-old at Boom Island Park and another involving an 18-year-old near Bde Maka Ska. (snip) The officer followed the man, identified as Zamir Abdulkadir Yassin, who was still holding the launching tube while he ran away, the complaint states.

Large groups of juveniles roamed the streets of Minneapolis Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, launching fireworks and causing uncontrollable chaos on the streets. Up to 500 individuals were roaming around at one point as police ordered them to disperse and go home, according to Crime Watch Minneapolis.

It was another chaotic year for the Fourth of July in Minneapolis this year, with videos posted to social meeting showing people recklessly shooting off fireworks. The Stone Arch Bridge was closed overnight in an effort to restrict access to the pedestrian bridge (it reopened at 6 a.m.) with the hope of avoiding a repeat of what happened last year on July 4th. But that's exactly what happened – just not on the Stone Arch Bridge.

A Minneapolis bar says it will no longer serve products from the country’s largest beer company. The Saloon, a popular gay bar on the corner of Hennepin Avenue and North Ninth Street, announced Monday that it has cut ties with Anheuser-Busch. That means the bar will no longer serve popular beers like Bud Light, Michelob Golden Light and Michelob Ultra. In place of those products, The Saloon says it will feature beers from local breweries Modist Brewing Co. and Bauhaus Brew Labs.
