I am sure by now all of you, like me, are weary of hearing Black Lives Matter, and all the rhetoric associated with the phrase. (Snip) I have been giving a lot of thought to what makes life matter.(Snip)For this thing we sum up as life, a big word indeed, what does give it meaning? What really matters? (Snip)
I would just, with your assistance, examine some of the more common motivations that I became familiar with through my childhood, born in the late fifties, and adult years, and feedback from friends, family, and ideas from my reading and studies.

My sentiments exactly OP! We went wrong in the sixties with the Johnson administration and Johnson's mishandling of the Vietnam War and the hippie movement etc., etc. etc. The permissiveness that arose then really eroded our values, and without discipline, you get chaos. That's what we have now taken to the extreme. I believe that all of this goes back to the Great Society, and Lyndon Johnson as the biggest mistake ever made by this country until Obama. We need eight more years of Donald Trump to get this right.

I enjoy reading articles that make sense. This one does.
As Thomas Aquinas wrote: If it does not make sense, reject it.

I enjoyed the article and, as I am a little older but roughly the same age as the author, I closely followed the chronological path of her upbringing. I was a bit surprised that she left out what was a defining set of events for me and a lot of people who grew up in the '60s and '70s: Vietnam and the nasty realities of a communist insurgency. Our country's left, including its leaders masquerading as democrat politicians and the news media, appear bent on following the Viet Cong model of making war against civilians, while hiding in plain sight. The communists won because they were willing to kill those who opposed them but it doesn't have to go that way in the US, unless our citizens shake off the belief that the "authorities" will protect us and preserve our country, its people, and our collective heritage.

Personally, this essay is one of God's "signal graces" that either guide us or reinforce our course.
In my instance it is family and the stories of my parents and grandparents who lived the 20th century. I've loved history since I came to awareness in the first grade that there were people and events before "now". I would linger at the holiday dinner tables as the grown-ups leisurely enjoyed their desserts and coffee, telling stories of their childhood and parents. I was still in grade school when my older sisters were teenagers and spent a lot of time home with Mom and Dad. I listened when they reminisced and asked questions to flesh out details. I've remembered it all.
Twenty years ago we moved from L.A. up here to our homestead in the forest. We hate the holiday hub-bub of the big city and have never gone home for Thanksgiving or Christmas in all these years. I've not been there to tell the stories over dessert. For some time I've had the idea to write out the family stories. Its easy to self-publish and I started the book this week. I'm nine pages, and 3,000 words in, and wondering if my nieces and nephews, and their children, would think it another weird Aunt TQ project and just toss it on the shelf.
This essay encourages my effort. Thank you Menagerie and OP for being the conduits of grace. The Holy Spirit does work in Mysterious and Wondrous ways.

It's not only people that make life matter. It's love for a pet that matters most to many and the absolute heartbreak when it leaves this World. I have lost two dogs and a bird before their time. They ask nothing from you and give everything they have to you. I am responding to the headline and my comment may not fit into the theme of the article, If not, Sorry.

Mark Steyn recently said something that really resonated: When you've lost the culture, elections don't matter. He was premature, because 2020 will be the most consequential in recent history. But after that...

Anyone whose ancestors (or themselves) arrived in the Americas voluntarily are "invaders", usurpers of all that was once good and pure, land of the indigenous peoples and then the prison for those brought here in bondage.
That's the basic premise of all this...

What matters most in life is the potentiality of living beyond one's own existence through the stories and memories of those who survive them. The great artists, scientists, and figures of history achieve this immortality across decades or even centuries but even ordinary people can have their existence ripple out across time by teaching and inspiring and caring for others in ways that become part of the stories of their lives. Everything else in one's existence ultimately is impermanent.

We thought the '60s tumult of the '60s would soon pass but its ramifications linger on today, tainting much of American politics and even life itself negatively. We have ignored the basics of what our freedoms are all about. We almost seem to have lost our Ship of State's moral compass.
America's foundational principles securing our Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness remain true & solid in the U.S. Constitution, yet we the people have neglected to fulfill our responsibilities as citizens to our families, our communities and our country. Too many of us apparently have become irresponsible destroyers instead of caring builders. We do seem to be at a fork in the road regarding America's future. We choose Life, Liberty & Justice for all.

As the writer says, this is not about BLM.
In the past, Lucianne called these longer essays “Weekend Reads”. Some print them off to read later. Whatever, this should be read and shared. This is the America most of us grew up in, what matters to us.
