New York's attorney general on Friday recommended the New York Police Department get out of the business of routine traffic enforcement, a radical change she said would prevent encounters like one last year in the Bronx that escalated quickly and ended with an officer fatally shooting a motorist. Attorney General Letitia James, who acts as a special prosecutor appointed to investigate certain police killings, argued that traffic stops for minor infractions often end in violence and that Allan Feliz's death last October after he was pulled over for a seat belt violation “further underscores the need for this change.” James’

People who live in high-crime neighborhoods must love officials like Attorney General Letitia James-they feel truly abandoned by the system that's supposed to protect them. All of this flows from the false narrative of aggressive over-policing. Look at how there is now skyrocketing burglary going on in San Francisco-they don't enforce quality of life crimes, they allow vagrants to defecate, and being overly permissive towards crime it -shockingly! - rises. LIberalism is truly stupid.

I've been pulled over by the police a handful of times during my "driving career" and each time I made sure I was polite to the officer and he/she could always see my hands (as my kids became drivers I imparted that same wisdom onto them). I suspect that if anyone who is pulled over followed that method there would seldom if ever be a violent outcome. It ain't that complicated.

Key word 'routine' traffic stops. Depending on the definition I have no problem with this proposal. I'd suspect that those who'd commit NON 'routine' violations are by far the most likely to start serious trouble anyway. But I agree with this if only to get police out of menial tasks. The rub is that who amongs us would like to get a ticket in the mail from a camera enforcement system or someone we'd NOT be able to whine our way out of a ticket?

Oh, by the way, I am sure insurance rates are not cheap in NY now - what will happen to the rates when there is no traffic enforcement. Yes, the rates will sky rocket - hurting the average New Yorker. Insurance rates will go up on limousine services, but the cost will be absorbed by the owners, and all of the limousine liberals will still drive around promoting clean energy and social justice at parties in the Hamptons.

If the PDNY stops making traffic stops that city will become a free range for speeders, the disregarding of traffic signals, and reckless driving. I'm sure that the automobile insurance companies will just go along with the massive increase in traffic accidents without any price spike retribution against policyholders in general if this Attorney General's recommendation against police traffic stops becomes a fact of life in NYC.

More cameras for speeding and stop light infractions or eliminate a revenue source. Who follows up on the scofflaws from automated ticketing?

Another complete freakin democratic moron. Question, why can't people just listen to a police officers instructions when stopped in a traffic violation. What does this moron not get. All those who died and caused these sick riots would be alive today if they just listened to the cops. There is zero respect for authority today.

To posters @ 5 & 13: citations issued on the basis of automated photographic evidence are ignorable in most jurisdictions as there is no one the accused can address in court. The right to face one’s accuser is a basic tenet of our jurisprudence.

Yeah NY, quit giving out traffic tickets as thousands move out of New York. But don't be begging the rest of America to bail you out again. You're going down the bankruptcy path along with liberal California due only to your stupidity.

FTA: 'The car which they say was moving was at best moving 2 mph. That wouldn’t knock over a fly "What an IDIOT. Ever try to stop a car that's started to roll down a hill with the engine off?
Of course the whole concept of ignoring violators is idiotic.

Well, sure. Once you make it to the getaway car, home free, the police have to give up and you get to keep the robbery money.
Great idea. I wonder why nobody thought of this before?

She is completely off the charts corrupt. I think she came into this position pre-corrupted, and it is only going to get worse. To the blacks and others who vote for people like this, I would ask why on earth do you keep voting for your own destruction?

When you really get down to it, traffic stops are NOT part of police jobs. We have just gotten use to them doing it.

Lately speed cameras and redlight cameras have popped up like weeds around the city. The city reduced street speeds to 25mph. The state has posted troopers on the bridges and tunnels (if the troopers ticket you the state gets the revenue not the city - part of the pissing match between Idiot Cuomo and Moron de Blasio.) Who needs traffic stops when you just mail a bill to the offender.

Traffic stops are not necessarily routine. When a drunk drives starts crossing the mid-stripe, that can cause headon collisions. When someone drives 100 mph in a 30 mph zone, that can causes deadly accidents. When someone doesn't repair their vehicle and sprays the highway with oil, those behind cannot breathe. There are a lot of reasons to have cops.
