Over three months ago, a majority of the Minneapolis City Council pledged to defund the city’s police department, making a powerful statement that reverberated across the country. It shook up Capitol Hill and the presidential race, shocked residents, delighted activists and changed the trajectory of efforts to overhaul the police during a crucial window of tumult and political opportunity. Now some council members would like a do-over. Correction*

"a case study in how quickly political winds can shift, and what happens when idealistic efforts at structural change meet the legislative process and public opposition" Nope. When they hit REALITY.

Think about this - in a year, every competent cop with under ten years invested in their pensions will have left. Those with near twenty, thirty, whenever they can retire will be on light duty due to an on duty injury somewhere in their career. Recruitment will be, gang bangers, lgbtxyz types, 5 foot 200 pounders. What fit, honest, competent person would remotely consider minneapolis police as a career. They got what they wanted, an ineffective, nearly non=existent police department. Then, if not now, the tax payers that can leave, will leave. Same for portland, la, any city with a similar governing body.
And for the resident slugs who say cops know what they signed up for, it wasn't to be totally back stabbed and having their hands tied by city government while trying to do their jobs. There used to be a saying among cops, if you need to be really liked, be a fireman, if your ok with doing a good job and helping people, being a cop is ok too.

Years ago, I heard Savage say Progressive/Liberalism was a mental disorder, I chuckled and thought to myself, there he goes again. But as God is my witness, I have come to believe that truer words have not been spoken.

Voters need to pledge to dismantle the feckless Minneapolis City Council.

Before you enjoy the schadenfreude too much, you should consider seriously where these leftists are really going with the "Defund the Police" actions. It's not really to get rid of all police. It's to REPLACE all of them with Antifa and BLM thugs who would then get uniforms, weapons, and the JustUs system's full backing to intimidate and jail otherwise law-abiding citizens who don't go along with the Marxist re-education and gun/tax confiscation plans. Chew on that for a while.

That's a stupid City Council. In fact the whole City management is incompetent. Fair weather leaders. And it can all happen again because the rioters know they aren't resolute law and order people.

The City Council pledged to disband the Police Department. Now most of the City Council members realize the City Charter is NOT going to be amended, as the voters are not nearly as stupid as the Council members who voted in favor of the proposed amendments. Now those City Council members fear that the voters will not re-elect those whose terms are ending unless reelected. Rather than admit that they massively overreacted, they are pretending they merely misunderstood what they were proposing, even to the extent of absurdly suggesting that they meant only to rename the Police Department! It's probable that the proposed City Charter amendments will be defeated by a large majority of the voters.

Only total idiots can even imagine that getting rid of the police is anything that could work. Beyond stupid.
Only young ignorant upper class leftists who have been raised in a crime free bubble and are totally out of touch with reality can believe such total nonsense, and obvious stupidity.

I would never say that there are no bad police, however, the greatest number of police officers are honest, decent people trying to do a tough job. What did these morons think was going to happen if they told the police to stand down. They got what they asked for and now have to live with it. Stand behind your police officers. They need to know that they are appreciated. I know I certainly think so. Trump 2020.

#5, exactly right. This would be Obama's civilian army-- as big and well funded as the US military.

#2,I don't want those taxpayers leaving and coming here to elect the same types that made them want to leave. Let them stay there and solve their own problems. They have the voting power.

I understand that they also are asking for $55,000,000 to rebuild the city.

DEFUND THE POLICE. Oh, lets see, he meant the words “in spirit,” not by the letter, Oh, the language in the pledge was “up for interpretation”, Oh, most of them had interpreted that language differently. Lets see, DEFUND THE POLICE. Seems pretty clear to me. Only these democratic morons have different meanings for DEFUND THE POLICE. What really accounts for this misunderstanding is a bunch of illiterates being elected in these communist cities. Got it.

Whenever the left's words come back to bite their butts rather than admitting they're wrong and rethinking their policy they blame the people for clearly being ignorant and therefore unable to understand enlightened beings such as themselves.
The MCC is just doing CYA clean up hoping to salvage their jobs. I hope they fail hugely.

Pretty easy. The M city council found out rather abruptly that they were dead and gone come election day and it was the black non-Somalian voters with the destroyed neighborhoods and GONE businesses that were writing up their walking papers. Back pedal as fast as you can. The burned businesses are still burned.
