I lived about 15 miles from Fort Bragg, North Carolina from 1994 to 2012, in a rural area where many Army officers and members of the various Special Forces groups based there made their home. After 9/11, our area was immediately impacted as Fort Bragg forces were some of the first deployed in the War on Terror. We were reminded daily of the sacrifices these families were making – the dad who wasn’t there to participate in Little League with the kids or read a bedtime story or attend awards ceremonies at the elementary school, or any of the hundreds of little things that make up family life.

Among American holidays, Memorial Day is unique also in that it originated from the vanquished, not the victor. After the war was over, women from the South—Columbus, Mississippi and Richmond, Virginia—set out to decorate with flowers the gravesites of their fallen Confederate soldiers.

Pope Francis declares war on conservative Catholics replies

I don't know what else you'd call this -- Pope Francis naming the Church's strongest and most outspoken progressive, San Diego Bishop Robert McElroy a Cardinal -- other than a war on conservative Catholics, with whom the Holy Father already takes a very dim view. Here's the news: Bishop Robert McElroy of San Diego, one of Pope Francis' ideological allies who has often sparred with more conservative U.S. bishops, was named by the pope on Sunday as one of 21 new cardinals. The San Diego diocese said McElroy will be installed by Pope Francis on August 27 at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Winning a cardinal's hat doesn't outrank the archbishop's mitre,

Ivan Arellano, a senior at Uvalde High School, told WFAA-TV in Dallas that Ramos “was not a good person” and had been a bully himself. “Salvador Ramos was a boy who was not bullied,” Arellano said on Wednesday. “He would try to pick on people but fail, and it would aggravate him.” (Snip) He would hurt animals. This past week our nation saw another morally lost young man enter a local school and proceed to shoot and kill 19 children and two teachers. The next shoe to drop was as predictable as the sunrise: Our nation’s elites rushed to their respective podiums to score political points. Their solution? Remove the personal rights of all law-abiding Americans and replace these rights with more laws. In the minds of our country’s political class, this is the only solution. The average citizen’s freedom “to keep and bear arms” is clearly to blame for every heinous act reported on the nightly

WASHINGTON — Still mourning a Texas mass shooting, Democrat Beto O'Rourke gave his long-shot campaign a jolt by imploring a national audience that it was finally time for real action to curb the proliferation of high-powered guns in his home state and across America. That was 2019, and the former congressman was running for president when he declared during a debate, “Hell yes, we’re gonna take your AR-15,” weeks after a gunman targeting Mexican immigrants killed 23 people at a Wal-Mart in O'Rourke's native El Paso. Last week, following the massacre of 19 elementary school students and two teachers by

Roger Scruton was a British philosopher who spent his life defending conservative values. Sir Roger, as he was after his knighthood in 2016, saw the antagonist culture as a rejection of inherited values, including gender distinctions, capitalism, patriotism, religious faith, and everyday morality such as honesty and prohibitions against theft, adultery, and other evils. No one understood antagonism better, on a theoretical level, than Scruton, and he wrote with passion and clarity. For anyone wishing to understand the culture of antagonism, Scruton's books, including The Meaning of Conservatism, The Aesthetics of Music, and How to Be a Conservative, are a good place to start.

BOGOTA - Gustavo Petro, who topped voting tallies with 40.8% in Colombia's first round of presidential elections on Sunday, has said his political awakening came when he watched his father weep over the death of Argentinian revolutionary Ernesto 'Che' Guevara. The 62-year-old senator and former mayor, who was part of the M-19 guerrilla group in his youth, hopes to sway millions in a June second round to become Colombia's first leftist leader in decades. Petro, who is running for president for the third time, has rejected populist characterizations of him by critics and attracted support on his generous social spending promises.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Milley gave the commencement speech at West Point last weekend, warning graduates of the new threats they’ll face. Word to the wise, cadets: Milley isn’t a guy anyone should listen to, on this or anything else. He’s been disastrously wrong time and again, for years.Where to start? Milley defended the decision to leave more than 100 Americans stranded in Afghanistan after the US pullout and called the withdrawal a “logistical success.”And let’s not forget the bungled US drone attack that killed an aid worker there, as well as two other adults and seven children.

Of late, the State appears to be an analogue to the mafia. For one piece of evidence, we can look to the inclusion in its main repertoire a mob tactic once used only sparingly: the bust out. A bust out is a mob tactic whereby a business-owner becomes indebted or obliged to a mobster, who subsequently coerces the business-owner to finance criminal operations on his company's credit. After multiple refinancing options and mortgages, the mafia burns down the overleveraged business and collects the insurance money.

Pope Francis on Sunday named as cardinal San Diego Bishop Robert W. McElroy, a Roman Catholic leader who had spoken out against the calls for bishops to exclude pro-choice politicians like President Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi from Holy Communion over their stances on abortion. The move comes in the wake of San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone's announcement earlier this month that he would bar Pelosi from receiving Holy Communion due to her stance on abortion. In naming McElroy, Francis passed over Cordileone, who holds a higher rank.
