Fish off the coast of Florida are testing positive for a slew of pharmaceuticals as human wastewater makes its way out into the sea.Researchers at Florida International University and the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust - a nonprofit based in Miami and focused on bonefish and tarpon conservation - studied the two types of fish found in Biscayne Bay and the Florida Keys since 2018.They collected blood and tissue samples from 93 bonefish and tarpon in the area, and found that each one had an average of seven drugs in its system - including antidepressants, blood pressure medications, prostate treatment medications, antibiotics and pain relievers.

"Testing positive"......1 part per trillion??
Currently we can detect such small , miniscule traces that I am always skeptical of their "detected" BS stories. Frequently this stuff has political considerations, most excuses for more central Commie control.

"Yet there are still no environmental regulations for the disposal of the pharmaceuticals."
This is inexcusable! Why the hell not? These problems have been known for years but has anyone taken steps to solve them?
Can it be true that existing filtration is unable to adequately filter these substances? Hard to believe, but if true we need to design, produce and use such filtration ASAP.

Nothing about amounts and, like poster #1 said, we can detect incredibly small, that is irrelevant, amounts.
And,... yes. Were the fish healthy?

Maybe the fish got the drugs from the researchers.

--yeah---and about 45 years ago, the rumor was that all mountain lakes in Colorado contained female hormones from birth control pills, too--and we'd all become sterile----(didn't happen as the teenage birth rate shows)

No wonder it feels so good to be at the beach. My guess is that fish down there also contain more than trace amounts of alcohol.

I read an article a few years back that said our water supplies virtually everywhere were filled with estrogen from the birth control pills women took and passed through wastewater treatment and into the water supply. That may explain the feminization of American men. I read another article that said the water surrounding Seattle was filled with caffeine.

Why should it be surprising that what we eat/ingest and excrete ends up where sewer water goes? Or that animals which live and breathe in that waste should have man-made substances within their bodies? It is foolish to think that ANY amount in water or the flesh of fish is of no consequence - we just don't know. Now whether it is even possible or financially feasible to perfectly clean up sewage is another question - maybe an important one.

Not to worry because with the new miracle drugs for HIV soon destined for ocean waters, the fish will be undetectable.
One other minor point: Tarpon and bonefish are great game fish but nowhere are they table fare. Nobody eats bonefish or tarpon. These fish are not kept; they are gently unhooked and let go.

Funny how they detected prostate drugs in fish off the coast of Florida. Did they also find a lot of fish with Viagra in them? No wonder the fishing is so good off the coast of Florida.

What's not to like. We've got happy fish that can pee when they need to, are safe from infection and pain free. Sheesh, and these guys are complaining? They should ask the fish and see what they think.

In other words, those fish are enjoying the benefits of modern medicine! Eat more fish to fight depression and keep your blood pressure under control? Actually you can probably also detect arsenic, lead, and other dangerous substances but the important issue is whether the level is high enough to be of concern.

I’m surprised there is no mention of birth control pill residue, viagra, or hormone blockers. They need a big government grant to do more research.

Bullcrap on this. Is this an attack on commercial fishermen? So this is soon to be a health emergency leading to banning fish and fish shortages and higher prices. I see how it works.
