With so many books and articles — especially all those shared on social media (maybe even this one) — the ability to read faster could be a life-changer. Which is why so many classes, books and apps claim they can get you to read faster — much faster. The problem is that true speed reading — a boost in reading speed by at least three times without any loss in comprehension — isn't supported by the science. "Speed reading is not actually possible," said Elizabeth Schotter, a cognitive scientist at the University of South Florida.

As editors and writers at Smithsonian magazine, we have the privilege of seeing hundreds of books before they are released each year. The titles that cross our desks span the subjects near and dear to us—science, history, art, world cultures, travel and innovation. We interview authors about their new works, publish fascinating excerpts, and sometimes find inspiration in little nuggets of information within the books for stories of our own. As the year draws to a close, we have clear favorites. We explored the caves, tombs and catacombs under our feet in Will Hunt’s Underground and Robert Macfarlane’s Underland. According to the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) — a liberal think tank affiliated with teachers’ unions — public-school teachers earn, on average, 21.4 percent less than private-sector workers in other fields who have similar educational and demographic characteristics. According to EPI, by offering higher pay, public schools could attract and retain better teachers, leading to better test scores, higher graduation rates, and better jobs for the future. It’s a compelling argument, at least to the news media, who echo it in their coverage. But if all that is true, why do private schools, even elite ones, pay teachers so little?

As the 2020 US election approaches, the number of concerns about political adverts on social media continues to grow. A week ago, Google stated that it would tighten regulations concerning political advertising on the company's platforms. Google and YouTube banned at least 300 video adverts, mostly over the summer, for violating their policies, CBS 60 Minutes reported citing Google's searchable archive of political ads that have run on the site. But the archive doesn't detail what exact policy was violated.

Today’s university students want to “wake” the nation to problems that they and their professors have identified as threatening our very existence. And they issue these periodic alarms in hyperbolic terms: we have just 10, 20—fill in the blanks—years to end fossil fuel use or else die from global warming. They warn us that there is a veritable war waged on American women who have been limited to a mere 800,000 abortions on average per year. Sexism must explain why only 56 percent of college students are women. The woke university lectures us that ubiquitous racism, white privilege, sexism, homophobia, transgender hatred, Islamophobia, nativism, and xenophobia

President Trump had a weeklong turkey trot, stepping all over the Democrats and their media comrades, giving them all a bad case of political indigestion. As many swing district House Democrats go back to their districts and explain to their constituents their support for the impeachment inquiry, Emmer said that the inquiry will result in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) losing her House majority. “This process they’re embarking on is going to cost them their majority next fall,” Emmer said. The NRCC chairman said that Democrats have an “obsession” with impeachment, adding that “it’s just getting worse for them.”

It is not a homogenous entity but an amalgamation of various factions now overwhelmingly dominated by its smallest and most radical element, the avowed Marxist/socialists. However, the largest group and underpinning of the movement are the credulous, patronizing and narcissistic liberals who in their naiveté believe that the enemy of my enemy, conservatives and Judeo-Christian values, are their friends. Yet those friends now control the Democratic Party and are feverishly attempting to transform this nation into a socialist “paradise” which will devour their liberal elite allies.

Their rhetoric notwithstanding, congressional Democrats understand that their chances of ousting President Trump from office are infinitesimal. There are a few, like AOC and “the Squad,” who still cling to the pipe dream that Trump will be impeached, convicted, and perp-walked out of the White House for multifarious yet oddly ill-defined crimes. More realistic Democrats understand that this is never going to happen, but they also know that mere censorship of the president is not an option if they wish to avoid a revolt by the left wing of their congressional caucus and voter apathy that could manifest itself in low turnout next November.

House Democrats’ impeachment show moves to Jerry Nadler’s Judiciary Committee this week — but don’t expect the proceedings to get any more serious. Sometime before Nadler starts things off at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Intelligence Committee chief Adam Schiff is supposed to send along his final report — which is apparently to be all the evidence the House will consider on the Ukraine matter, despite the near-complete lack of first-hand testimony. Judiciary is simply going to “consider” whether the wrongdoings that Schiff alleges actually constitute “constitutional grounds for impeachment,” with experts brought in to opine on whether President Trump’s actions warrant such a grave step.
