Both Republicans who Donald Trump endorsed won their special congressional elections Tuesday night in North Carolina, delivering the president a symbolic victory as his re-election season gets underway. The two contests, months in the making, were seen as referenda on whether the president could hold on to majorities in red states that propelled him to the Oval Office. Republican Greg Murphy won his Third Congressional District handily, holding on to a seat left vacant when Rep. Walter Jones died in February. For eight years, Samantha Power served President Obama as an aide and then as U.N. Ambassador but also as an in-house conscience on matters of foreign policy. When she entered the White House, at the age of thirty-eight, she had already established a reputation as a kind of Joan of Arc for humanitarian intervention. Ben Rhodes, an Obama foreign-policy adviser and speechwriter, imagined that she bore a permanent tagline that seemed to announce her position at every meeting: Samantha Power, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “ ‘A Problem from Hell’: America and the Age of Genocide.” When innocent lives were threatened abroad, Power frequently pushed for forceful action.

Democratic congressional candidate Valerie Plame's (N.M.) campaign on Monday released a new ad, where she ended it with a message of having a "few scores to settle." The ad, which is titled, "Undercover," shows liberal activist and ex-CIA operative Plame driving a Chevy Camaro backwards on an empty road in rural New Mexico while narrating her background throughout the ad. "I was an undercover CIA operative. My assignment was preventing rogue states and terrorists from getting nuclear weapons. You name a hot spot, I lived it," Plame said, as Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Syria, and North Korea flashed as text on the screen.

Todd Palin appears to have filed for divorce from former Alaska governor and one-time vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, his wife of 31 years. In a document filed Friday in Anchorage Superior Court, Todd Palin, 55, asked to dissolve the marriage, citing an “incompatibility of temperament between the parties such that they find it impossible to live together as husband and wife.” The divorce filing uses initials rather than full names, but identifies the couple’s marriage date and the birth date of their only child who is a minor, Trig Palin. The filing asks for joint legal custody of the child. Anchorage attorney Kimberlee Colbo is representing Todd Palin in the divorce.

If you've ever wondered what you would do if a pot of money inexplicably showed up in your bank account, one couple's woes following an unexpected windfall provides a useful lesson: First, contact your bank. Robert and Tiffany Williams of Montoursville, Pennsylvania, in May reportedly received an unexpected deposit of more than $120,000, the result of a BB&T bank teller's mistake, according to a police criminal complaint provided to CBS News by the Pennsylvania State Police. The money was supposed to have been deposited to an investment firm. Rather than checking with the bank on the nature of the deposit, the pair allegedly spent more than $100,000

On Thursday, five Texans who frequent the San Antonio airport and wish to eat Chick-fil-A there filed a lawsuit against the City of San Antonio under S.B. 1978, a new Texas law dubbed the "Save Chick-fil-A Bill." The new law forbids government actors from discriminating against religious groups or those associated with them, and removes government legal immunity from agencies that do so. The law's passage followed the San Antonio airport's ban on Chick-fil-A, citing "a legacy of anti-LGBTQ behavior" and calling the fast-food chain "a symbol of hate." "The city’s continued exclusion of Chick-fil-A is based 'wholly or partly' on Chick-fil-A’s past and present contributions,

Oh, boo-hoo! Desperate actress Felicity Huffman is to face the music Friday, and not a moment too soon. A federal judge in Boston is set to sentence the Emmy-winning, Golden Globe-losing, Oscar-nominated thespian for her most spectacular performance to date: She lied, cheated and attempted to steal her daughter’s college seat out from under some poorer and more deserving candidate, paying $15,000 to hire someone to correct wrong answers on her kid’s SAT exam. And she whined about it. This is no victimless crime. Begging a judge to spare her from the slammer, Huffman, who displayed not a lick of remorse or shame — until she got caught — did something
‘Downton Abbey’ should’ve stayed a TV show replies

Two thumbs “Downton.” PBS viewers will recall those classy evenings spent with “Downton Abbey,” the charming British series about a noble family in Yorkshire and their giant manse, which aired from 2010 to 2015. The Crawleys’ and their servants’ affairs and silverware disasters were a pleasure to watch. And then, like all good things, “Downton” ended. Or it should’ve, because its new film continuation is as forced and unnecessary as a curtsy to Meghan Markle. In this lifeless blob of brass fixtures and aerial shots, the Downton denizens are thrown into a tizzy when a letter arrives saying that the king and queen are coming for a visit. Polish the candlesticks!

Hurricane Dorian has claimed another victim: victory for Democrats in 2020. Last week’s marathon CNN climate forum makes it clear: Dorian blew what remained of Democrat common sense right off the map. Ask yourself, is Elizabeth Warren smart to promise she’ll ban fracking, when Democrats are desperate to win Pennsylvania in 2020, and the Marcellus fracking play has produced hundreds of thousands of jobs and tens of billions in income for the state? Does Beto O’Rourke have a future in Texas after vowing to eliminate all fossil fuels, when oil and gas taxes sustain the state’s enviable growth and even a cushy “rainy day” fund?

The Central Intelligence Agency on Monday evening slammed what it called CNN's "misguided" and "simply false" reporting, after the cable channel's chief national security correspondent authored a hole-filled piece claiming that the CIA had pulled a high-level spy out of Russia because President Trump had "repeatedly mishandled classified intelligence and could contribute to exposing the covert source as a spy." The extraordinary CIA rebuke came as The New York Times published a bombshell piece late in the evening, which largely contradicted CNN's reporting. According to the Times, CIA officials "made the arduous decision in late 2016 to offer to extract the source from Russia" -- weeks before Trump even took office.
