Colombo, Sri Lanka — Sri Lanka's debt-laden economy has "collapsed" after months of shortages of food, fuel and electricity, the prime minister told lawmakers Wednesday in comments that underscored the country's dire situation as it seeks help from international lenders.
Ranil Wickremesinghe told Parliament the South Asian nation faces "a far more serious situation" than the shortages alone, and he warned of "a possible fall to rock bottom."
"Our economy has completely collapsed," he said.
The crisis on the island of 22 million is considered its worst in recent memory, but Wickremesinghe did not cite any specific new developments.

The Catholic Church is heeding federal law enforcement's warning that a radical group is "calling for extreme violence" against churches nationwide in response to the Supreme Court's expected reversal of abortion rights. An internal document obtained by Newsweek outlines intelligence shared by the Department of Homeland Security with the Catholic Church of a planned "Night of Rage," targeting churches and pregnancy centers over their opposition to abortion rights. The document sheds light on how law enforcement and the church are bracing for backlash after a leaked opinion showed the Supreme Court preparing to rescind federal abortion rights.
Labeled an "urgent memo," the document is from the Diocese

The Senate voted 65–33 to pass a bipartisan gun-control bill late on Thursday night, sending the legislation to the House.
The bill requires increased background checks for gun buyers under age 21, including of mental-health and criminal records, and provides funding for states to implement “red flag” laws designed to prevent dangerous individuals from purchasing guns. Funding is also allocated toward mental-health and school-safety programs under the legislation.
The text of the bill was introduced on Wednesday night and was the product of weeks of negotiations led by Senators Chris Murphy (D., Conn.), Kyrsten Sinema (D., Ariz.), John Cornyn (R., Texas), and Thom Tillis (R., N.C.).

A new front in tensions between Russia and NATO has opened up after one of the Western military alliance’s members, Lithuania, banned the transit of some goods coming from Russia to its exclave Kaliningrad on the Baltic Sea. With the Biden administration we are truly in a wilderness of curved mirrors, where people don’t trust what they see and what government says. The people behind Joe Biden don’t even try to hide the fact that their agenda constitutes what many feel is nothing short of betrayal -- a government against the people.
We are passing through a time when the elite of our society call right, wrong and wrong, right, and when evil is called good and good is called evil. Before we consider what can be done, let’s take a walk through the current upside-down priorities of the various agencies of our government:

Tuesday’s Supreme Court decision in Carson v. Makin highlights America’s complicated religious history. The nation’s highest court correctly held that Maine violated the US Constitution’s First Amendment by excluding religious schools from a tuition assistance program that allows parents to use vouchers to send their children to public or private schools — though three justices disagreed because they misread that history.
Chief Justice John Roberts’ opinion — joined by the five other conservative justices — emphasized the free-exercise clause, which “Maine’s ‘nonsectarian’ requirement for its otherwise generally available tuition assistance payments violates,” he wrote.

It couldn’t have been more perfect than Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas penning the definitive decision that the right to carry guns on one’s person for self-defense is inherent for all Americans.
First of all, Thomas has been after the court to take up more gun rights cases. He used his considerable influence with Chief Justice John Roberts to continue looking for gun rights cases to take. The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc., et al. v. Bruen and the state of New York was the obvious choice. President Biden really does not want the public to know about his federal takeover of election administration. Dozens of members of Congress have repeatedly asked for details, to no avail. Good government groups, members of the media, and private citizens have filed requests under the Freedom of Information Act. Not a single one has been responded to. All signs indicate a concerted effort to keep the public in the dark until at least after the November midterm elections. The lack of transparency and responsiveness is so bad that the Department of Justice and some of its agencies have been repeatedly sued for the information.

The Biden administration on Tuesday proposed changes to the federal civil-rights statute banning sex discrimination in federally funded education programs, including expanding protections to sexual orientation and gender identity.
One proposed change “would make clear that preventing any person from participating in an education program or activity consistent with their gender identity would subject them to more than de minimis harm on the basis of sex and therefore be prohibited, unless otherwise permitted by Title IX or the regulations.”
If adopted, the rule change would bar universities and any other federally funded institutions from maintaining men’s and women’s sports and sex-segregated spaces like locker rooms and dormitories.

Roosevelt Rappley entered the Dayton-area store, produced a firearm, and started demanding money. One of the store clerks was a concealed carry permit holder and was legally armed. For a classic example of shoddy, dishonest journalism that serves as pure propaganda for the Biden administration, look no further than NPR’s attempt to discredit our reporting on the secret flights ferrying illegal migrants from the southern border to unsuspecting communities around the country.
NPR did not mention The Post in Monday’s story, only its permanent bugbear Fox News and Tucker Carlson who admirably followed up, but the journalism it pooh-poohs is ours.
“Republicans and right-wing media . . . accuse the Biden administration of organizing secret migrant flights . . . but NPR’s Joel Rose reports that rhetoric is often at odds with the facts.”

Republican pundits and conservative activists are debating whether they can win in 2024 with the successful Trump agenda, but without the controversial former President Donald Trump as their nominee.
The Democrats have a similar, but far more serious dilemma with President Joe Biden as the Democratic Party's nominee in 2024.
Unlike the Trump Administration's successful four years, Biden's tenure has been an utter disaster. There are no policy offsets to the personal liabilities and unpopularity of Biden himself.

The Supreme Court on Thursday handed down its opinion in a landmark Second Amendment rights case, the biggest win for gun rights since the court's Heller ruling holding that "New York’s proper-cause requirement violates the Fourteenth Amendment by preventing law-abiding citizens with ordinary self-defense needs from exercising their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms in public for self-defense." (Tweets) The ruling came down 6-3, with Justice Clarence Thomas writing the majority opinion joined by Justices Roberts, Alito, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett — plus concurring opinions by Justice Alito and Justice Kavanaugh. Justices Breyer wrote the dissent joined by Sotomayor, and Kagan.

Washington — The Supreme Court on Thursday struck down a New York law that placed strict restrictions on carrying concealed firearms in public for self defense, finding its requirement that applicants seeking a license to carry a concealed handgun demonstrate a "proper cause" to do so in public is unconstitutional.
In a 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court reversed a lower court decision upholding New York's 108-year-old law limiting who can obtain a license to carry a concealed handgun in public. Proponents of the measure warned that a ruling from the high court invalidating it could threaten gun restrictions in several states and lead to more firearms on city streets.

The San Francisco school board voted 4-3 Wednesday night to return Lowell High School to a merit-based admissions system, two years after it first switched to a lottery-based system.
Beginning with freshman entering in fall 2023, test scores and grades will be used to admit students to Lowell, barring any other changes by the board, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
The board first voted in favor of a switch to the lottery system in October 2020 because they said remote learning created a lack of academic data on which to base admissions decisions.
Four months later, the board made the decision to permanently switch to a lottery system

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. - Buford Springs in Hernando County is known for its underwater caves, and Thursday it remained the scene after one person was found dead and another remains missing following their dive.
Rescue crews were called out to the springs, located inside the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area, on Wednesday. They said they were able to recover one of the divers, who died. But as for that other diver, as of Thursday morning, the individual is still missing.
"It does attract a lot of open water divers," explained cave diving instructor Edd Sorenson. "It is deeper than recreational limits. So a lot of people don't realize the hazards and

To paraphrase the great John Bradford, “There, but for the Grace of God, go we.”
Considering the high-profile status that Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has achieved, it’s easy to forget that he almost lost his state’s gubernatorial election four years ago. He may be the front runner to succeed Donald Trump as the GOP’s presidential nominee during the next election cycle should Trump decide to sit it out, but in 2018 Governor DeSantis barely squeaked by the Democrats’ candidate, former Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum.
Fortunately for Florida, and indeed for all Americans, DeSantis succeeded in defeating Gillum the last time around,

Disney may have grown relatively quiet after a reported backlash over Florida’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill, but the company isn’t losing steam where LGBT support is concerned.
The Mouse recently released its animated Lightyear to less than bountiful box office acclaim, and some might suggest one factor against the film was its same-sex kiss. Disney had cut the scene but reinstalled it after its showdown with Ron DeSantis.
Nonetheless, its next animated project may sport more Rainbow radiance than ever before: Strange World will include a gay teen romance.

Politico correspondent Betsy Woodruff Swan alleged Wednesday that two Democratic lawmakers spoke candidly about how the electorate does not care about Jan. 6. During a panel discussion on "Meet the Press NOW," NBC anchor Chuck Todd cited a Quinnipiac poll that asked Americans if they thought former President Trump "truly believed there was voter fraud" in the 2020 presidential election or that he has "deliberately spread false information." (Snip) 'I don't think it does," Swan responded. "I've talked to two separate Democratic members of Congress over the last couple of weeks about January 6th, obviously can't say who, and both

The 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion decision, it’s fair to say, is one of the most divisive in the history of the U.S. Supreme Court. And the media have largely played up that divisiveness. But a new I&I/TIPP Poll shows that while Americans show deep splits over abortion, their opinions about the controversial medical procedure are far more nuanced than media accounts suggest.
A new Supreme Court ruling on Roe is due any day now. Based on a leaked draft of an earlier version of that decision, it seems highly likely that Roe will be overturned.
With this in mind, the I&I/TIPP Poll asked

ABIM contacted Dr. Peter McCullough in a letter dated May 26, 2022 notifying him he is accused of spreading misinformation and started an investigation to remove his board certification.
Senator Ron Johnson heard about the letter and sent a letter dated June 15 to Dr. Richard Baron, President & CEO of the ABIM where he politely offered to host an expert panel of doctors in Washington DC to resolve what the science actually says, similar to the widely popular “A second opinion” panel he hosted, but this time with scientists on both sides.
Note that Johnson’s original panel invited scientists on all sides but nobody was willing to support

On Wednesday’s broadcast of CNN’s “The Lead,” Senior Adviser to President Joe Biden Gene Sperling said that Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s comments that high inflation pre-dates Russia’s invasion of Ukraine don’t contradict President Joe Biden’s rhetoric and “the reason we’ve seen the gas price rise, both here and really around the world, is due to Putin.”
Sperling responded to Powell’s comments by saying, “Jake, that is clearly correct, and that is not contradictory with anything this president said.”

On Wednesday’s broadcast of CNN’s “AC360,” Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) argued that the Senate gun legislation “paves the way in the future to look at” other gun control provisions.
Host Anderson Cooper asked, “Well, there [are] probably a lot of people who wanted this to — obviously, you said you wanted this to go farther in terms of gun safety or gun control. What do you say to those who say that this doesn’t go far enough and that this may make it harder to try to get further changes in the future?”
Klobuchar responded, “We have worked on this for decades.

A bloodhound named Trumpet won the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on Wednesday night.
Trumpet beat a French bulldog, a German shepherd, a Maltese, an English setter, a Samoyed and a Lakeland terrier to take the trophy.
'I am so excited for Trumpet,' said handler Heather Helmer, who co-owns and bred the 4-year-old. Trumpet became the first bloodhound to win Westminster.
Winston, a French bulldog co-owned by NFL defensive lineman Morgan Fox, took second in the nation's most prestigious dog show.

In this excerpt from the just-published “Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words” by Michael Pack and Mark Paoletta, the Supreme Court justice reflects on changes in his hometown, Savannah, Ga. The book is based on more than 30 hours of interviews Pack conducted with Thomas and his wife Ginni for the film of the same name; 95% of the book’s material is new, including this excerpt.
Michael Pack: You have talked a little today about how life in the black community has not been improved by many well-intentioned social programs. Do you think, in some sense, it is worse than when you grew up?
