Colombo, Sri Lanka — Sri Lanka's debt-laden economy has "collapsed" after months of shortages of food, fuel and electricity, the prime minister told lawmakers Wednesday in comments that underscored the country's dire situation as it seeks help from international lenders. Ranil Wickremesinghe told Parliament the South Asian nation faces "a far more serious situation" than the shortages alone, and he warned of "a possible fall to rock bottom." "Our economy has completely collapsed," he said. The crisis on the island of 22 million is considered its worst in recent memory, but Wickremesinghe did not cite any specific new developments.

Two of the primary providers in Texas ceased performing abortions on Friday after the Attorney General warned they could be prosecuted immediately.
“Some prosecutors may choose to immediately pursue criminal prosecutions based on violations of Texas abortion prohibitions predating Roe that were never repealed by the Texas Legislature,” AG Ken Paxton said in a written opinion issued following the court’s ruling. “Although these statutes were unenforceable while Roe was on the books, they are still Texas law,” Paxton wrote. “Under these pre-Roe statutes, abortion providers could be criminally liable for providing abortions starting today.”
The House of Representatives on Friday passed the most sweeping gun control bill in nearly 30 years in a 234 -193 vote as Congress responds to gun violence across the nation.
The legislation garnered some GOP support with 14 House Republicans crossing party lines to vote in favor of the measure.
The bill, which will now head to the president’s desk, passed the Senate with a 65-33 vote late Thursday night.
Ten Senate Republicans and 10 Senate Democrats began negotiations on the legislation after two mass shootings in Buffalo, New York and Uvalde, Texas left dozens dead last month within a week of each other.

The Supreme Court on Friday overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that legalized abortion, allowing a Mississippi law passed that bans abortions after 15 weeks to take effect.
“The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives,” Justice Samuel Alito wrote for the 6-3 majority.
The ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization means each state will now be able to determine its own regulations on abortion, including whether and when to prohibit abortion.
During an interview on MSNBC on Thursday, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot criticized the Supreme Court’s ruling on New York’s gun laws for failing to see “the importance of federalism.” And stated that she’s worried the ruling will “the legitimacy of the court, particularly given the leaked draft of the Roe decision.”

Pelosi — in remarks at her weekly press conference, which took place minutes after the decision was released — said the ruling is an “insult” and “a slap in the face to women.”

A shaken Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) issued a statement and spoke to reporters Friday on the Supreme Court decision returning abortion lawmaking to the states.
