Canada’s counter-tariffs ‘pulled the
rug out from’ CUSMA, U.S. envoy says

U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra says Canada is jeopardizing the future of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) — also known as USMCA — on free trade due to Canadian counter-tariffs on certain American products. “Canada is the country that has pulled the rug out from USMCA,” Hoekstra said in an exclusive interview with Global News on Thursday. “They also started putting tariffs on CUSMA products … We haven’t done that, but Canada has decided ‘That’s fair game. We will call into question CUSMA.’”

Comments:

This little fact-oid -- that Canada's retaliatory tariffs were on goods that were covered (and therefore supposed to be tariff-free) under the USMCA treaty -- got essentially *no* coverage in the US mainstream media. And it casts the whole trade dispute with Canada into a different light: Reality is that after Canada's actions PDJT could have called USMCA null and void, but instead he allowed petulant Canadians to continue to ship goods into the US sans tariffs under the agreement even while Canada was violating it. This sets the stage next year for PDJT to tell the Canadians "no negotiations and no renewal" of USCMA -- and "here's the tariff schedule you'll be stuck with from now on." Congrats, Canada -- you put the screws to yourselves. Might as well stick those elbows up your posteriors. It also shows one other thing: PDJT cares more about the people working auto sector jobs in Ontario than the Canadian government does, because he protected them at a time when Canada's government exposed them. Now PDJT is giving Canada time to come to its senses, but it appears to be all for naught. If I were an auto worker in Ontario, I'd begin looking for ways to relocate to Michigan or I'd find something else to do for a living.

NAFTA was a screw job for the USA. And now the damned Canadians are violating their treaty obligations, and we do nothing. Void the entire agreement.

Russia launched 270 drones and 10 missiles against Ukraine on August 19, in a kinetic response to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's White House talks with US President Donald Trump and key European allies. Ukrainian regional officials said that over 24 hours Russian shelling across the Kharkiv, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhya, and Kherson regions had claimed the lives of 15 people and injured at least 76 more. It was reported that the Poltava region was hit particularly hard, leaving over 1,500 residents without electricity. In Chernihiv, drones damaged infrastructure and disrupted power supplies.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre is heading back to Parliament after capturing victory in the Battle River—Crowfoot byelection. The seat became available earlier this year when Conservative MP Damien Kurek stepped aside following the spring general election, opening the door for Poilievre to run in the rural Alberta riding. Pierre's wife Anaida posted on X shortly after the results were projected: "Politics is up and down. People do it because they believe in something." President Donald J. Trump predicted that MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace would soon get the ax at the troubled left-wing propaganda network, days after her profanity-laced on-air rant about peace in Ukraine. The “Deadline: White House” host, who has been branded as “the Typhoid Mary of Disinformation” for her shameless disregard for the truth, raged after Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s successful talks in Alaska on Friday, proclaiming that Trump “doesn’t give a [SNIP] about democracy,” in her unhinged diatribe.

Russian reporters are whining about having to sleep on cots and being served old tuna for breakfast while covering the Trump-Putin summit in Alaska — but their own country may actually be to blame. The Kremlin journalists griped that they’ve had to rough it on portable beds with no sheets set up at the Alaska Airlines Center sports arena in Anchorage, where they were hardly able to make phone calls. They — gasp — even had to get by without bottled water.

Retired British Army Colonel Richard Kemp has said the primary risk the UK faces is from an alliance “of the hard left and Islamist extremists” and that he fears civil war because politicians are too myopic to take action. Colonel Richard Kemp, a high-profile Infantry officer who fought counter insurgency on home ground in Northern Ireland in the 1980s, served in the Gulf war and Bosnia, commanded an Afghanistan operation, and who had political-facing senior roles in Westminster including the powerful Joint Intelligence Committee and the Cabinet Office crisis centre COBRA, has expressed concern about unrest and even civil war potentially breaking out in Britain.

“India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits,” U.S. President Donald Trump posted last week on Truth Social. “They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA.” These words directly implicate buyers of Russian oil as accomplices in the murder of tens of thousands of Ukrainian people in the war started by the Kremlin on 24 February 2022, as indeed they have been.

George Soros turns 95 today, and for his birthday present America brought him the annihilation of his legacy. Soros has been known for two things: making money and spending it on political influence. Over the last few years, he has handed over control of his empire to his son, Alex, and Alex seems unable to do either of those things successfully. Beijing is quietly discouraging Chinese firms, particularly those tied to state and/or national security interests, from using Nvidia's H20 AI chips, even after the Trump administration reversed a U.S. sales ban in exchange for 15% of related revenue. The move follows Beijing's concerns over a potential "backdoor" in the H20, an allegation Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has rejected. The report comes from the Financial Times, which states that regulators at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) instructed tech companies, such as Alibaba and ByteDance, to explain why they need H20 chips instead of sourcing domestic alternatives.

Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson invoked a popular comic strip in an angry dissent, accusing her colleagues of being in the bag for President Donald J. Trump. The left-winger who was appointed by disgraced former President Joe Biden to fulfill his pledge to put a black woman on the SCOTUS has repeatedly shown that she lacks the intellect and temperament for the job with her emotional antics. Not that another example was needed, but Jackson served it up anyway, describing the court’s latest overruling of an activist lower court judge who blocked the ending of DEI-based grants at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as “Calvinball.”

Mass protests have exploded outside migrant hotels across the country this weekend as furious families gathered in major cities including Birmingham and London. President Trump went on a late-night attack against NBC and ABC News on Sunday, deriding them for what, in his view, was "biased" coverage and said he would be in favor of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) revoking their licenses. The Republican president said the news outlets had given him negative coverage on "97%" of stories. It wasn’t clear from where Trump was citing the "97%" figure. A study released earlier this year by the conservative media watchdog group, Media Research Center (MRC), found that coverage of the president’s first 100 days in office was "92% negative."

Representative Al Green, who has served Texas’s 9th Congressional District since 2005, will finally leave office. The Texas Legislature, led by Republicans, passed a legal redrawing of congressional maps that effectively eliminates District 9. Green, best known not for legislation but for shouting down President Trump during his address to Congress in March 2025, will be removed from office after nearly two decades of loud, ineffective, and divisive politics. Unsurprisingly, Rep. Al Green called the redistricting racist. But the only racial injustice here is the Democrat Party’s decades-long abuse of district lines to cling to power.

In Los Angeles, the problem of tent encampments has persisted for almost 20 years. They began to pop up after city officials settled an American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit in 2007 by agreeing to stop enforcing a ban on sitting, lying or sleeping on the sidewalk. More lawsuits, settlements and court rulings led to the entire city and much of the state becoming the site of homeless encampments on sidewalks, streets, freeway embankments, overpasses, underpasses, median strips, parks, parking lots, public plazas, beaches,
