Sen. Mitt Romney’s (R-UT) approval rating in Utah is dropping, and most say he should not seek reelection, a recent Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics poll found. The survey found just 41 percent expressing approval of Romney’s job performance, and of those, 15 percent “strongly” approve. Forty-nine percent disapprove, and of those, 30 percent disapprove “strongly.” Another ten percent “don’t know.” This reflects a five-point increase for Romney in terms of disapproval as 44 percent of voters disapproved of his performance in March. It also reflects an 11-point drop from the 52 percent who approved in March.

Few things concern American citizens more than the steady encroachment of the federal government on our constitutionally protected liberty. WB Yeats’ words aptly describe the way millions of Americans feel about their own government: “The falcon cannot hear the falconer; things fall apart; the center cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.” The federal government seems to have no mechanism of self-restraint. We feel suffocated by its excesses. It is appropriate in this context to celebrate the passage of SCR 21, Senator Stewart Cathey’s Joint Concurrent Resolution.

Former President Donald Trump on Sunday branded the 37-count federal indictment he faces as nothing more than a “distraction” from the bribery allegations levied against President Biden — while also taking aim at his own ex-attorney general William Barr for not backing him over the classified documents case. Trump, 76, in an interview with ally Roger Stone, said he doubted it was a “coincidence” that he was charged for allegedly storing hundreds of classified government files at his Mar-a-Lago estate at the same time as Republicans revealed more details regarding an FBI informant’s accusation that Biden took part in a $5 million bribery scheme involving the Ukrainian company Burisma.

Are you ready for the government to take away your car? New proposed regulations on automobile emissions from the Environmental Protection Agency would require 60% of new car sales to be electric vehicles by 2030 and 67% by 2032, compared to the fewer than 6% that were on the road in 2022—for no environmental benefit. (Snip) The EPA is also planning new rules for power plants, driving up the costs of the electricity needed to charge these vehicles. These rules plus the EV sales mandate would raise driving costs for Americans and strengthen China’s economy, because China makes 80% of the world’s electric batteries.

In 1789, James Madison and the framers of the U.S. Constitution, having declared independence and fought a war against the tyranny of the British monarchy, were now challenged by a weak, ineffectual national government that threatened the viability of a nascent nation. In response, they architected a new Constitution that established a tripartite government comprised of the executive (the President), legislative (Congress), and judiciary branches — each with separate, yet countervailing powers. This separation of powers with its checks and balances is the foundational cornerstone of our constitutional system of government. It is, as explained by Madison, “essential to the preservation of liberty” by guarding against the

Ironically, Atkins was reciting 1 Corinthians 14:33 that begins “For God is not the author of confusion.” That role appears to rest with the Reading police, which processed a wildly exaggerated account of the encounter.
