Fulton County, Georgia, District Attorney Paul Howard Jr., held a press conference earlier this afternoon to announce eleven charges against police officer Garrett Wolfe for the shooting death of Rayshard Brooks. The shooting took place at a local Atlanta Wendy’s. In what appears to be a decision heavily influenced by local politics, DA Howard is charging officer Garrett Wolfe with felony murder, an unlawful killing with malice, forethought and specific intent. New York—As journalists grapple with massive protests and sweeping changes in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death, U.S. newsrooms are debating an important style change: whether to capitalize the “b” in black when describing people. The Los Angeles Times, USA Today and NBC News last week changed their practices to do that, and the National Association of Black Journalists urged other news organizations to follow. Many are studying the idea, including The New York Times and The Associated Press. The AP Stylebook of usage policies is highly influential in the industry with many news organizations, government and public relations agencies using it as a guide.

Now-indicted actor Jussie Smollett claimed that Donald Trump partisans attacked him late at night on a deserted Chicago street in January 2019. Though most of the corporate media gladly amplified his concocted tale, to sensible Chicagoans the story reeked from the jump. First, because the bone-chilling polar vortex that night practically precluded outdoor human activities, even for hearty Windy City residents. And even before evidence emerged that he paid two Nigerian brothers to stage the “attack,” Smollett’s story that his assailants screamed “this is MAGA country” seemed farfetched to the point of farce: 21st century Chicagoans are fully aware of the deep-blue Democratic political proclivities of our city.

No names or anything, just tremendous building power with political powerhouses all over. Well, now the cymbals have clashed - the big rollout is happening: Axios has the scoop. A group of prominent Republican operatives that includes former officials from the Trump and George W. Bush administrations are launching a super PAC to turn out GOP voters for Joe Biden in November, organizers tell Axios.

Let me be blunt - I have a real problem being told about my supposed subconscious racism. There are some real racists still around, of every skin color, but assuredly I’m not one of them. My wife and stepson (and large family of in-laws) are Asian, my goddaughter is black, and there is no need to further list friends and associates who may be of different hues. I treat everyone I know or may meet in a friendly, fair and equitable manner, unless or until they give me a concrete reason to act differently. I’m a pretty simple guy at heart, so let’s not make the world any more complicated.

There is a growing call for Disney to rebrand one of its classic rides, which is intertwined with arguably the company's most controversial film. Amid the ongoing worldwide anti-racism protests in the wake of the May 25 killing of George Floyd, a number of discussions have taken place about previously accepted symbols of historical division in America. There have been some direct results from the renewed outcry, such as NASCAR banning the use of the Confederate flag at races and the country band Lady Antebellum renaming itself "Lady A." Disney has found itself in the middle of the debate due to Splash Mountain,

On June 17, 1932, 17,000 United States military veterans of World War I and 25,000 of their friends and family gathered in Washington, D.C. to demand early payment of their service certificate war bonuses. Although the bonuses were not due to be paid until 1945, the Great Depression had hit the United States and these veterans were floundering financially. General Douglas MacArthur, chief of staff of the Army, personally led US troops to forcibly drive away his fellow veterans, even though future 5 star general and president, Maj. Dwight Eisenhower (serving as an aide to MacArthur) counseled him not to have anything to do with the eviction.

Today’s Supreme Court decision protecting Americans from being fired because of sexual orientation certainly makes one thing clear — it is a fool’s errand to predict what a justice is going to do once he is granted life tenure on the high bench. We can’t count the number of times we’ve pressed that point in our decades in the editorial galleys. Rarely, though, has a case so roundly marked the matter as the one decided today. The case is known as Bostock v. Clayton County, Georgia. The county was haled to court after it fired an employe, Gerald Bostock, who’d started participating in a gay recreational softball league.

By now, we ought to be seeing some evidence of increasing COVID-19 cases from the mass protests. The fact we are not raises very serious doubts about the coronavirus lockdowns and other non-pharmaceutical interventions, many of which are still ongoing. One explanatory hypothesis is the weather — that outdoor protests in warmish weather might have decreased the infectious potential of SARS-CoV-2. This seems highly unlikely. Even if there is such an effect, it almost definitely doesn’t outweigh the close proximity of protesters to one another. Another explanatory hypothesis is that most protesters are relatively young, and therefore unlikely to fall ill but may asymptomatically transmit the virus.
