Juneteenth–the nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States–will now be recognized as a holiday in New York State, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday. Cuomo, speaking during his daily press briefing in Albany, said he will sign an executive order recognizing Juneteenth as a holiday for state employees. The governor will advance legislation to make Juneteenth, which falls on June 19, an official state holiday next year. “It is a day that we should all reflect upon,” Cuomo said. The move comes after massive global protests against the May 25 Minneapolis police killing of George Floyd

The Emancipation Proclamation became effective on January 1, 1863. The 13th Amendment became law on December 6, 1865. What the heck is June 19th other than the day former slaves in Galveston, Texas were first made aware of their emancipation. But world-class virtue signaling by Governor Cuomo.

Stupidly citing the wrong date sort of goes with the territory, doesn’t it?

Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation applied only to the Southern states that broke away from the Union. Any slaves in the Northern states, to include those serving Abe Lincoln in the White House, which itself was built using slave labor, were exempt. And, Lincoln wanted the freedmen deported after the war was ended. A funny thing, history. Jefferson monument's got to go, Washington monument's got to go, probably the White House should be transformed into a BLACK History museum.

How long for Hussen-Obama's August birthday is yet another holiday? So far August has no official holidays, although I suspect most government workers take the month off already.

Nobody but the very few "woke" would have known about "Juneteenth" if it hadn't been for the Trump rally set on June 19th! We have people who have nothing better to do than to look for obscure events and ancient tweets that can be used for virtue signaling and applied to harm Trump and conservatives. Commemorating Juneteenth is as absurd as Kwanzaa.

Well this will surely stop any future looting and burning. S/off
I can actually see this date becoming an excuse for a day or two rioting in the future.

#5 is an idiot. The 13th amendment was passed in the Senate in April, 1864. The democrats in the house refused to pass it. It wasn’t ratified until January, 1865. Lincoln didn’t have slaves working in the WH either.

As with everything else associated with this issue, the truth doesn't matter. One would think that blacks would get tired of being pandered to with lies and fake stuff!

Imagine the irony when it devolves into a reason for a day of storewide discounts, and everything but white linens is on sale.

It commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union general Gordon Granger read federal orders in Galveston, Texas, that all previously enslaved people in Texas were free.[ Although the Emancipation Proclamation had formally freed them almost two and a half years earlier, and the American Civil War had largely ended with the defeat of the Confederate States in April, Texas was the most remote of the slave states, with a low presence of Union troops, so enforcement of the proclamation had been slow and inconsistent.
Another holiday like Cinco de Mayo, Kwanzaa and Presidents day which have nothing to do with the day of celebration. Notice I 'insulted' Latinos, Blacks and all others equally.

Not only does this virtue signal and (might) buy him some goodwill with BLM thugs, but he can give state employees another paid day off, thereby helping him with that group. The working stiffs in the states will get screwed, paying for another non-productive state holiday, but they don't count for nothin'.

For police, Fire, and EMS in Texas, Juneteenth is a day typically marred by the drowning deaths of small black children.

The spirit of all Americans to unify behind a date that is important in our history (the day that all American slaves effectively were freed) is a good one. It would be nice to celebrate a milestone in which the U.S. lived up to its founding principles. Unfortunately, to time the implementation of this holiday with the current show of hatred for the racial group that largely fought and died to make the day possible makes it look petty and vengeful, especially coming from an race-pandering thug like Cuomo in conjunction with Al Sharpton and BLM.

All these dang states are a little late to the game with this HoliPandering. We've done just fine with celebrating Juneteenth down here in Texas all my life and way back to my great-great-grandpappy. It's a fun summer day with picnics and swimming and hand churned ice cream and the best Black Diamond watermelons you'll find on this earth. New York and Virginia will just mess it up if they try to make something out of this.

We need to quit putting a 'd' behind these Democrats and start using a 'p' for pandering.

Other posters note that New York is named in honor of the Duke of York, who was a prolific slave trader. Kneeling down for Juneteenth is a good first step in reconciliation, but unless and until New York changes its name to New Floyd or Georgeland, the peaceful protests and accompanying enhancements to the landscape will continue.
