The National Park Service reportedly fired a trans Yosemite National Park ranger who hung a transgender pride flag across the park’s El Capitan rock formation in California earlier this year. Shannon "SJ" Joslin, 35, wrote an Instagram post on Monday claiming to have been fired from the park "for practicing my First Amendment right" after hanging the 55-foot by 35-foot flag across Yosemite’s iconic rock destination in May. Joslin, who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, claimed to have raised the flag while off-duty and as a private citizen. "I was fired by the temporary Deputy Superintendent for ‘failing to

There is a big difference between raising a flag (of any kind) on property that you own and raising a flag (of any kind) on property that you do not own. The former instance is covered under the First Amendment. The latter one is not. The owner of the property (in this case, the Federal government) has a right to remove said flag from its property and seek redress (in this case, unemployment). Will he/she/it/they/them sue to get their job back? Maybe. Will they ultimately win? Not in the court of a sane, rational, Constitutional judge.

Laypeople would be arrested for hanging their free-speech banner on a monument or on a national park's scenic view spots. Her penalty should be at least as great -- a park ranger should have an even higher standard of respect for El Capitan and Yosemite.

This person was an activist/influencer first, and a park ranger second. They were right to fire them. If you were out in the wilderness needing help, imagine this person showing up. Her actions were wrong on so many levels. As mentioned by previous posters, any civil servant or government employee is prohibited from politcal acts or statements while working in an official capacity, regardless of the content. Taxpayers should not be subsidizing this. Even if she did this on her own time on federal/public property, that's still a foul. Finally, the flag she posted represents morally repugnant and sexually perverse values that is at war with reality, common sense, and G-d Himself and should NOT be celebrated, but condemned.

I agree with firing all park rangers that inject their personal views into their public presentations. If you take a cruise to Alaska's Glacier Bay National Park, Ranger Nate will come on board and present a slick multimedia show and scolding talk about how the glaciers are melting and how CO2 levels are skyrocketing due to burning fossil fuels and driving SUVs. I was too polite to shout out bull**** several times, but his blatant unproven conjecture should be stopped. This article reminds me that I should fire a formal complaint with the National Park Service and send copies to DOGE, etc.

So, now you get to have loads of time to roll the flag up really tight and insert it in your favorite personal place! You might want to read the Hatch Act Law.
