The National Park Service reportedly fired a trans Yosemite National Park ranger who hung a transgender pride flag across the park’s El Capitan rock formation in California earlier this year. Shannon "SJ" Joslin, 35, wrote an Instagram post on Monday claiming to have been fired from the park "for practicing my First Amendment right" after hanging the 55-foot by 35-foot flag across Yosemite’s iconic rock destination in May. Joslin, who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, claimed to have raised the flag while off-duty and as a private citizen. "I was fired by the temporary Deputy Superintendent for ‘failing to

I agree with the OP. I thought Civil Service employees had to be apolitical while on the job.

Who does she think she is? That doesn't look like the pride flag i know. It looks like the flag for the Republic of Bugry.

Why do you feel it is necessary to announce your sexual predilections to the world? Just live your life, do your job, and keep your private life private.

I could be wrong but I don’t think our 1st Amendment rights extend to defacing national parks.

There is a big difference between raising a flag (of any kind) on property that you own and raising a flag (of any kind) on property that you do not own. The former instance is covered under the First Amendment. The latter one is not. The owner of the property (in this case, the Federal government) has a right to remove said flag from its property and seek redress (in this case, unemployment).
Will he/she/it/they/them sue to get their job back? Maybe. Will they ultimately win? Not in the court of a sane, rational, Constitutional judge.

There is no trans. It's violent psychosis. Violent psychotics have no place in federal service.

"Dr Shannon Joslin, who holds a PhD in genomics and studies bats"
"The 35-year-old, who is nonbinary, and six other climbers, unfurled the 55-by-35 foot pink and blue flag one third of the way up the iconic granite monolith."
I am hoping you and six other climbers fall off the rocks and medical attention is nowhere to be found. Cheers!

Laypeople would be arrested for hanging their free-speech banner on a monument or on a national park's scenic view spots. Her penalty should be at least as great -- a park ranger should have an even higher standard of respect for El Capitan and Yosemite.

This person was an activist/influencer first, and a park ranger second. They were right to fire them. If you were out in the wilderness needing help, imagine this person showing up. They may well do more harm than good. The Obama presidency encouraged this kind of behavior, and we are still dealing with it today.

Her actions were wrong on so many levels. As mentioned by previous posters, any civil servant or government employee is prohibited from politcal acts or statements while working in an official capacity, regardless of the content. Taxpayers should not be subsidizing this. Even if she did this on her own time on federal/public property, that's still a foul. Finally, the flag she posted represents morally repugnant and sexually perverse values that is at war with reality, common sense, and G-d Himself and should NOT be celebrated, but condemned.

I agree with firing all park rangers that inject their personal views into their public presentations. If you take a cruise to Alaska's Glacier Bay National Park, Ranger Nate will come on board and present a slick multimedia show and scolding talk about how the glaciers are melting and how CO2 levels are skyrocketing due to burning fossil fuels and driving SUVs. I was too polite to shout out bull**** several times, but his blatant unproven conjecture should be stopped. This article reminds me that I should fire a formal complaint with the National Park Service and send copies to DOGE, etc.

Your freedom of speech, as you call it, IS NOT applicable when it comes to your JOB and expressing personal views. So, now you get to have loads of time to roll the flag up really tight and insert it in your favorite personal place! You might want to read the Hatch Act Law. It specifically prohibits government employees from publicly stating personal political views at work, and the LGBQ+EIEIO BS IS POLITICAL!

No one is authorized to deface a Federal park with political symbols of any kind. So long as this prohibition is uniformly applied the First Amendment is not violated.

By the way, Shannon Joslin is a biological female. G-d perfectly and wonderfully made her a woman. And a woman she will remain, despite her protests, pronoun games, and body mutilation to the contrary.

I was born and raised in the South. My great grandfather and his 4 brothers were Confederate soldiers. I am well aware that my first amendment right does not allow me to put a giant Confederate flag on government property nor would I expect it to. This is one of the things that really annoys me about the left. They think that the rules that normal people follow don't apply to them. In their minds, they are convinced that theirs is the one, true ideology and anything goes to "spread the word". They are also surprised and horrified when they have to face consequences.
