SAN FRANCISCO — California’s unemployment rate increased slightly in July and is now the highest of any state in the nation. California added 15,000 nonfarm jobs in July, according to the Employment Development Department, pushing the unemployment rate up 0.1% to 5.5%, which is higher than that of any other state and higher than the national average of 4.2%. July’s job gains follow a downward-revised job loss of 9,500 for June, the EDD said. A suspected illegal alien was killed after darting onto a freeway to avoid contact with federal immigration officers conducting an enforcement operation at a Home Depot store in Monrovia on Thursday, according to city officials. The man was struck by a passing motorist and taken to a hospital, where he later died.
Monrovia City Manager Dylan Fiek says the man ran from the Home Depot parking lot onto the 210 Freeway and likely was fleeing to avoid detection by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in the city located 20 miles north of Los Angeles.

US District Judge Sparkle Sooknanan, a Biden appointee, issued an injunction against the FTC and blocked its investigation into Media Matters.
