OAKLAND — Oakland police say roughly 5,000 people were hanging out on Lakeshore Avenue when gunfire erupted Saturday evening. The mass shooting at Lake Merritt injured six people and killed a 22-year-old San Francisco man. “All I saw was the gunshot. SAN DIEGO — Two career-changing putts for Jon Rahm brought two trophies Sunday. He cradled his 3-month-old son, Kepa, as he walked off the 18th green at Torrey Pines on Father’s Day. And then he collected the silver U.S. Open trophy after a performance filled with passion and absent of blunders that wiped out everyone else. Rahm made a bending 25-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole to catch Louis Oosthuizen. He buried another curling, left-to-right birdie putt from 18 feet on the final hole for a 4-under 67 and a one-shot victory. “Little man, you have no idea what this means right now,” Rahm said to his son

The novel A Canticle for Leibowitz begins in the deserts of the American Southwest, some centuries after nuclear war devastates the earth. There, generations of Catholic monks copy and preserve the fragments of texts from earlier civilization that they themselves don’t comprehend.
Canticle may have been science fiction but it was inspired by a mix of history and the author’s experience.

This clip has gone viral on social media, and it’s easy to understand why (for those not in the know, “Titania McGrath” is a parody account making fun of woke militants; the video clip, though, is real):...Goldsmiths University in London is to allow students to delay sitting their exams or apply for assignment extensions if they have suffered ‘racial trauma’
The institution has changed its policy after a proposal from the students’ union, updating the list of circumstances students can cite when applying for extensions for exams or essays to include race-based trauma.

Disney has been accused of pricing out loyal customers by targeting affluent families with $800 hotel rooms and $100 sandwiches at its theme parks, despite having scaled back its 'magic' since the pandemic began. A family vacation to Disneyland - once the pinnacle of summertime for middle-class American families - will today set a family of four back more than $6,000. With the average annual income now standing at $5,725 a month, this means a visit to the so-called 'happiest place on earth' is increasingly out of reach to the average American family.

I didn’t smoke a cigarette until age 10. Before that, me and the local boys would tramp over the local hills in search of dead ferns to smoke. By high school, we’d graduated to the healthier option. Cadging together $3, we’d skulk outside the off-license and wait. After 12 stern rejections, a reliable character would, for buyer’s rights of one cigarette per 10, smuggle us a glossy packet of Lambert and Butler. Unknowingly, we were Ayn Randian capitalists—peddling each cigarette on the school’s black market for six times the store price. Since then, I’ve smoked with sinful enthusiasm. Business owners and residents in New York City are expressing fury at the revelation that prosecutors have dropped looing and rioting charges against hundreds arrested during chaos that swept the city last summer.
After 603 were arrested in Manhattan and the Bronx during the most intense days of looting last June, 295 of the cases have been dropped completely, according to NYPD data reported by WNBC-TV on Friday.
Now Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr and Bronx DA Darcel D. Clark are facing tough questions about why hundreds walked free after the looting rampage caused an estimated tens of millions in damages.

Don Surber posted an amazing pair of maps yesterday, showing the way that federalism is working to enable citizens to defend themselves with firearms. While the federal Constitution guarantees the right to bear arms, states regulate firearms licensing, and in the past 35 years, a landslide of states has recognized the right to carry a firearm. Check out the night and day contrast between 1986 and 2021.
Don comments:
Without firing a shot (except at the firing range), Americans have won a revolution -- state by state.

The city of Evanston, Illinois, located just north of Chicago, joined communities across the U.S. in celebrating their first in-person Juneteenth parade Saturday, but some have been left wondering why celebrations for the nation’s Independence Day have been canceled.
The Evanston Fourth of July Association voted to cancel the town’s Independence Day events earlier in 2020 and opt for a virtual celebration instead -- citing concerns over the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. "Based on concern for public health due to the unpredictability of the pandemic’s impact, vaccination rates, and in cooperation with our local authorities, the Trustees…voted to cancel

Sometimes, you just have to take the L. Perhaps Nikki Fried didn’t expect CNN’s Poppy Harlow to insist on it. In an interview yesterday with the presumed Democratic frontrunner to take on Ron DeSantis, Fried refused to credit the governor for getting anything right about the COVID-19 pandemic response in Florida.
When Fried began to criticize DeSantis on nursing home policy, however, New York-based Harlow snapped back that DeSantis was “one of the quickest governors to lock down the nursing homes — the opposite of what happened here in New York.” Fried never really recovered from that pushback

Governor Abbott threatened to defund the Texas Legislature after Texas Democrats walked out of the legislative session rather than take a vote on election reform laws. When they broke quorum and shut down the session, Abbott said that if legislators weren’t going to do their jobs, they shouldn’t be paid. Friday Abbott made good on that threat.
The elections bill was a top priority for the governor during this year’s session. Texas Democrats decided to cut and run, breaking quorum, instead of voting on Senate Bill 7. They knew that the Republicans had the votes to pass the legislation – both the Texas House and the Texas Senate hold Republican majorities.

When I read “To Kill A Mockingbird” for the first time--and every time since--I invariably pictured my father as Atticus Finch.(Snip)After I read of how Atticus gently sat Scout down on the porch swing and explained our imperfect world to her childish ears, I thought of each time my dad would do the same when I discovered some new hurt or crisis. His explanations of the deep obligations of integrity sounded like the heartfelt lessons in which my dad explained to me the importance of doing what’s right.(Snip)My dad taught me to respect and expect integrity, sacrifice, and wisdom from men.

And so it ends.
On Friday, June 18, 2021 the Rush Limbaugh Show officially shut down the Golden EIB microphone.
As it happened, it fell to my local Harrisburg radio host, WHP’s Ken Matthews, to be the last “guide” host that had shepherded the show since Rush departed to give back the talent he had on loan from God.
The realization that Rush’s show - which had continued since his death with guide hosts and taped Rush playbacks on various topics - was now, in fact, irretrievably over and never to return was both poignant and a tad unnerving for his fans.
