“Father Knows Best,” now that is a totally radical idea to utter in 2021 even on Father’s Day. The theme song and mid-century look of the original TV show may be a true throwback, but it also involved a literal truism. The sitcom began in 1954 and produced 203 episodes all the way up until late 1960. Set in the Midwest, it starred handsome and debonair Robert Young as an insurance agent, Jim Anderson, a.k.a. Father. His wife Margaret, and three children rounded out the cast. Father regularly offered sage advice advising his children (Snip) Fathers knew best: they were wise, authoritative, caring, loving, and essential.

Ozzie & Harriet were mighty good too.....

I think the tv we watched affected our character development.
My generation watched Father Knows Best, Ozzie & Harriet, Andy Griffith, Leave it to Beaver, Lucy, Dick Van Dyke, My Three Sons, The Flying Nun...there was usually a moral to the story.
My kids watched Friends....where the family unit was the friend group and the eyes were rolling when parents dared to show up at their apartment; Married with Children....where the father was a dufus; Buffy the Vampire Slayer....where again the friend group was all that mattered; The Simpsons; Roseanne; That 70s Show...
Is it any wonder that many in this generation of 30 somethings have kicked their family to the curb?

Three generations of single black moms would probably disagree - with venomous anger if one suggested they haven't done a good job parenting. And they haven't. I would argue that the new nuclear family is great grandma, grandma, and mom with children.

Leftists hate the family. Most probably came from dysfunctional ones.

#2, we didn’t allow our millennial daughter to watch any of those shows, especially The Simpsons. Though I have no doubt that she watched them in the homes of friends. She didn’t have her own computer either but had to use ours which was in the kitchen where we could keep an eye on what she looked at.
We still had our share of teenaged problems with her but she now has a real family of her own.

Forgot to add - the lack of fathers in the home can be laid directly at the feet of Lyndon Johnson and the feminists.

In order to benefit from a real father, the children need to have him at home and married to their mother.

I know it's anathema to focus on physical differences between men and women but a single mother loses control of her children when they turn about 14 and are bigger than she is. A father does not have to beat his kids to keep them in line, all he has to do is let them know that it's a possibility if they get too frisky. It also helps if he is sober, spends time with them and serves as a role model.

Sorry, but I'd bet the under.
Not in my family, though. We're good and will stay that way.

Notice that the leftist and socialist Democrats are all on a full court press to encourage Black people to focus through the new Juneteenth Black Independence Day national holiday on a historic event that occurred over 150 years ago when the last Black slaves were notified by the US Army that they had been emancipated by President Lincoln and were no longer slaves, but were free people. While at the same time the leftist and socialist Democrats are very silent about Black people celebrating Father’s Day, could that be because it is reported that about 75% of Black children are growing up in residences without fathers, led by either single mothers or grandparents, that is a current national social crisis that the leftist and socialist Democrats continuously ignore and have made no major effort to repair, except to throw money at the problem that has only increased the problem. Even though the leftist and socialist Democrats claim that Black people are their most important political constituency.

Even though Andrew Breitbart said that politics is downstream from culture, I seriously doubt that ANY television show, regardless of its decadal provenance, would be valuable as arbiters of culture and Good Living. First of all, again regardless of decadal provenance, anyone who said you should live your life like you see it on TV was justifiably regarded as a fool. Its an infantile way of experiencing your Life. And you can't say that Hollywood and media have always been fraught with lies and manipulation and then suddenly say that a particular, certain group of shows are the righteous path. The TV shows existed the way they did in the time they did because 1) the prevalent culture ALLOWED it, and 2) they reflected what was already there. I think other posters pointing out how President Johnson and other cultural factors played a far greater role in defining family life. The pressure from Progressives to bring more and more society under a centralist government, plus the fact that so many men in government ALLOWED government to take over their role played a huge part in the downward spiral we are experiencing. If men didnt think government could offer to the family what they themselves could not, why did they come up with Welfare programs or allow abortion? There were just as many lies being told in the 1950s as there are now...

For years, all father characters on new TV shows have been completely incompetent fools, incapable of doing anything right. Part of the leftist narrative, trying to destroy the family.
Fortunately, my father was an extremely accomplished man, military fighter pilot, skilled mechanic, woodworker, home builder, plumber, licensed electrician, competent musician, expert water skiier, and all around great guy. I learned a tremendous amount from him directly and as a role model.

Feminism required the destruction of men in general and the Father figure in particular. Can't have a good welfare program with a man in the house.
IMO Married With Children began the ultimate demise of Fathers and respect for parents.
