Lebron James “was crying,” Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison was ebullient, and Senator Tim Scott got some facts wrong, but nobody had a stranger reaction to the guilty verdicts in the Derek Chauvin trial than Nancy Pelosi. The Speaker of the House quickly arranged a presser outside on Capitol Hill after the guilty verdicts were read on Tuesday afternoon. Members of Congress were arrayed behind Pelosi as the House Speaker looked prayerfully up to the sky and, in a voice muffled by her mask, said in her treacly way: Thank you, George Floyd, for sacrificing your life for justice. Your name will become synonymous with justice.

People who come from a variety of socioeconomic, religious, and political experiences formed a conservative populist coalition long before Donald Trump descended Trump Tower’s escalator in June 2015

President Joe Biden’s administration overturned restrictions on Friday relating to federal funding of the use of fetal tissue – body parts of aborted babies – for experimental purposes. The policy reverses a ban put in place by former President Donald Trump limiting federal funding for such research. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), (Snip)announced Friday that it would be revoking the Trump-era requirement that “all research applications for NIH grants and contracts proposing the use of human fetal tissue from elective abortions will be reviewed by an Ethics Advisory Board.” (Snip) “HHS/NIH will not convene another NIH Human Fetal Tissue Research Ethics Advisory Board,”

State Department spokesman Ned Price’s condemnation of the Kremlin comes amid a massive buildup of Russian troops along the Ukrainian border and underscores fears in Washington that Russia may be laying the groundwork for a major military offensive. “The United States expresses its deep concern over Russia’s plans to block foreign naval ships and state vessels in parts of the Black Sea, including near occupied Crimea

The attorney representing former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin asked the court to declare a mistrial, citing prosecutorial misconduct and ongoing comments from public officials they feel will influence the jury's decision. Shortly after jurors began deliberations, defense attorney Eric Nelson argued that special prosecutor Jerry Blackwell's characterization of his closing argument laid the grounds for a mistrial. (snip) Cahill denied the motion for a mistrial, but Nelson tried one more time in light of recent comments by U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters. The California Democrat had joined protesters on Saturday and pressed for protests to escalate if Derek Chauvin was not found guilty on murder charges

Yet after several years of claims from politicians, activists and commentators that President Donald Trump and/or his campaign actively colluded with Russia to steal the 2016 election from Hillary Clinton, the scandal itself has essentially died

Many Christians are feeling frustrated with the Biden administration. A recent op-ed in the Wall Street Journal points to how Joe Biden’s flip-flop on refugees is frustrating evangelicals who foolishly voted for him last November. As the Journal contributor noted, they have a reason to feel betrayed.  Believers who care about values, life, and religious liberty continue to find that the new administration has let them down time and time again. While Biden may attend Mass regularly, many of his policy positions raise questions of how diligently he practices his Catholic faith outside the four walls of his church. CORRECTIONS*

It would be funny if the stakes were not so high, but political differences within families seem to fall along the same lines as party differences. Who could have predicted that all those Trump haters who swore they would never submit to a vaccine that President Trump had brought to market with Operation Warp Speed are those who now are lining up like bleating sheep to get vaccines that are experimental? Or that millions of those who support the former President are much more likely to be wary of the four vaccines now available?
