The City of Cedar Rapids announced on Monday that they would be paying Jerime Mitchell, a Black man who was paralyzed after a police officer shot him during a 2016 traffic stop, $8 million in a settlement. The settlement cancels a trial that was set to begin Tuesday and sets the record for most expensive payout over police misconduct allegations in Iowa history.

Ron DeSantis (R) said that some of the coronavirus restrictions Florida did early on “were ineffective” and that if he had more data early on, he could have said “we’re not doing Faucism” earlier.

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland issued an order Apr. 16 to forbid the bureaus and offices of the Interior Department from applying some of the current guidelines under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), whenever those guidelines differ from rules that predated the Trump administration.

Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday signed the so-called "anti-riot" bill into law, which places tougher penalties on protesters who engage in violent rallies.
"We're not gonna let the mob win the day," DeSantis said during a news conference in Polk County, calling the plan the "strongest anti-rioting" legislation in the country.
"The state of Florida takes public safety very seriously," he said.

Diaz, the medical examiner, said the autopsy found no evidence the 42-year-old officer suffered an allergic reaction to chemical irritants, which Diaz said would have caused Sicknick’s throat to quickly seize. California Democrat Maxine Waters went to Minneapolis this weekend to encourage Black Lives Matter protesters to ignore curfews and get more “confrontational” if the jury does not find Derek Chauvin, guilty of murder. She added,
As we reported yesterday, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) was in Brooklyn Center at a BLM protest. She demanded a guilty verdict from the jurors at the Chauvin trial and urged protesters to be “more confrontational,” saying people “need to know that we mean business.”
After she made her comments Saturday night, members of the National Guard who were patrolling with police in Minneapolis were shot at. Two were slightly injured in the incident — one from flying glass, and the other had superficial injuries.
Many Republicans blasted her actions, decrying that a member of Congress would behave in that manner.

An illegal alien has been convicted and sentenced for repeatedly raping a child after federal immigration officials failed to deport him in the sanctuary state of California, Breitbart News has learned.
Fredys Aguilar-Menjivar, a 31-year-old illegal alien from El Salvador, was convicted and sentenced to 45 years in prison in Monterey County, California, this month on three counts of forcible rape of a child under 14-years-old and one count of child molestation, the District Attorney’s Office announced.

Dr. Anthony Fauci opined Sunday about the surge of gun violence in the United States and described the spike in shootings as an issue of public health.
Speaking to CNN host Dana Bash on “State of the Union,” Fauci was asked to comment on whether he believes gun violence is a public health emergency.
“Myself, as a public health person, I think you can’t run away from that,” Fauci replied. “When you see people getting killed, I mean, in this last month it’s just been horrifying what’s happened. How can you say that’s not a public health issue?"
Mike Mitchell, co-founding guitarist of "Louie Louie" rockers the Kingsmen, died Friday at age 77.
Dick Peterson, the band's drummer since 1963, confirmed Mitchell's death in a statement to Rolling Stone. He said Mitchell, the Kingsmen's sole remaining original member, "peacefully passed away," but no cause of death was announced.
