'Unprovoked escalation':
U.S. slams Russian military's
partial blockade of Black Sea

Top U.S. officials late Monday slammed Russia‘s “unprovoked escalation” in the Black Sea, saying Moscow‘s plan to blockade parts of the sea during military exercises is unacceptable and further evidence of Russia‘s intent to undermine neighboring Ukraine. State Department spokesman Ned Price’s condemnation of the Kremlin comes amid a massive buildup of Russian troops along the Ukrainian border and underscores fears in Washington that Russia may be laying the groundwork for a major military offensive. “The United States expresses its deep concern over Russia’s plans to block foreign naval ships and state vessels in parts of the Black Sea, including near occupied Crimea

Comments:

Never Trumpers have leg hairs tingling over Joe Bidet's steady diplomatic hand leading us to the brink of hostilities, versus Reckless President Trump and our rare interval of unprofitable international peace. Also, why do we care about the Ukraine or anywhere else when we refuse to secure our own border? Dispatch a ship of our Proud Rainbow Warriors under the gay/trans flag, maybe even with a Village People brigade singing "In the Navy" over loudspeakers. Vlad will recoil in horror.

#9, If they did send in Russian surface fleet, it would be legal, and I doubt it would be opposed in any way by the USN, but would of course be shadowed by aircraft. The chattering classes would chatter, of course, but that's what they do. And the Russians have so many ship breakdowns that they often send an oceangoing tug as part of any fleet out of home waters to tow their junkers home. They sent their 'almost an aircraft carrier' to the eastern Med a few years back, and it belched black smoke the whole way and had an ocean going tug nearby all the time. Launched a few dozen airstrikes into Syria, crashed two of their 'up to 30' aircraft operationally and headed home. Their subs have entered the Gulf of Mexico, a stunt really. The Gulf has extremely broad continental shelves around the edges so they have pretty limited maneuvering room in the deep portion of the Gulf, only about 120 to 150 miles N-S, only four or five hours of fast running time. Add in that there are only two passages in and out of the Gulf, 120 and 90 miles wide, and I'd imagine that a sub would feel pretty trapped in that area and not want to be so limited in their operations.

The US will likely reach a “tipping point” over the next few weeks when supply of the COVID-19 vaccine will outpace those willing to receive it, according to a report released this week. “While timing may differ by state, we estimate that across the U.S. as a whole we will likely reach a tipping point on vaccine enthusiasm in the next 2 to 4 weeks,” the nonprofit Kaiser Family Foundation said in the report published Tuesday. “Once this happens, efforts to encourage vaccination will become much harder, presenting a challenge to reaching the levels of herd immunity that are expected to be needed,” the report said.
