Sen. Ron Johnson has tested positive for COVID-19, he revealed Saturday. Johnson is the third Senate Republican to come down with the virus in recent days. “Senator Johnson feels healthy and is not experiencing symptoms. He will remain isolated until given the all-clear by his doctor,” a spokesman for the Wisconsin senator said in a statement. Johnson first learned of the diagnosis Friday afternoon. The senator’s positive test result comes after he recently completed a 14-day quarantine for possible exposure during which he repeatedly tested

Maybe 2020 seems jinxed because familiar institutions are collapsing on themselves like they have never done before. Global civilization now relies on natural and human networks of such complexity that their interactions generate unpredictable events with increasing frequency and make the present ungovernable. In retrospect the currrent crisis may have shown itself as far back as Brexit in 2016 and been accelerating ever since. We are met by fresh shocks at very turn. The hope is that 2021 will bring new “luck” . But if 2020 happened not from bad luck but the result

Many harsh words are traded on Twitter each day. Dick Costolo, the former CEO of the company, added some of his own tonight. Costolo was responding to a debate that has consumed tech’s elite on Twitter over the past few days, an argument about whether the industry should actively promote social justice causes and encourage political conversations at work. Costolo’s comments had the effect of dumping a jerrycan’s worth of fuel on the fire. “Me-first capitalists who think you can separate society from business are going to be the first people lined up against the wall and shot in the revolution,” he tweeted. “I'll happily provide video commentary.” Costolo’s extraordinary language

The Commission on Presidential Debates has agreed to seat Kamala Harris and Mike Pence 12 feet apart at the vice presidential debate next week, after the Biden campaign raised health and safety objections to the original spacing between the two candidates because of Covid concerns. As of Friday evening, however, the commission would not accede to the Biden campaign‘s request that Harris and Pence stand during the debate. Instead, the two will be seated, which was the preference of the Trump campaign, a source familiar with the discussions told POLITICO.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi raised the possibility that she might become acting president if neither President Trump nor Democratic nominee Joe Biden wins enough electoral votes to declare victory in the election on or after Nov. 3. Pelosi, a California Democrat, told reporters Thursday that she is preparing House Democrats for a potential role in determining the winner with a vote by each state delegation. But if a majority still does not emerge for either Trump or Biden, Pelosi said, “then it goes into another range where the speaker becomes the [president]. It’s complicated after that.” It is rare for the House to play a role in determining the outcome

New York governor Andrew Cuomo (D.) said Wednesday that the widely reported readmission of coronavirus patients to nursing homes at the height of the pandemic in the state "never happened." Cuomo said that despite a March 25 advisory issued by his administration barring nursing homes from denying admission to patients "solely based on a confirmed or suspected case of COVID-19," readmissions never took place. He claimed that, because the state "never needed" those nursing home beds, readmitting COVID-positive patients "just never happened."

News that President and Mrs. Trump have tested positive for the coronavirus, announced by the President this morning, will no doubt be met by sneering and ill wishes by many of the President’s detractors. Yet it is being met by many more — millions of Americans, ourselves among them, and by millions abroad — with hopes and prayers for a speedy recovery. This is a moment to reflect on the nature of our republic. Our Constitution marries a system of democracy with a compact among sovereign states. It grants the power to choose the president to the states. If they reach a majority in the electoral college,

So, Donald Trump has the Wuhan pangolin virus, and of course he does because it’s 2020 and how could he not have it? With this year, you take the most random scenario, you multiply it by 10, gobble a handful of the brown acid, and just go with it, and even then the whole thing spins even more out of control than you ever imagined. Now the question is what this all means for the campaign. I bet it helps Trump. Joe Biden’s got to be worried. Well, Grandpa Badfinger‘s handlers have to be worried. “By any means necessary” is a battle cry of the far left, coined by a Marxist philosopher on the Caribbean island of Martinique in 1960. Fast-forward six decades, and the far left in the U.S. has embraced that end-justifies-the-means credo with monomaniacal gusto in the run-up to the 2020 presidential election. How other than “by any means necessary” can you characterize billionaire plutocrat Michael Bloomberg’s plan to shovel — or bulldoze — a staggering $100 million

Tuesday night saw a firehose-style stream of ridiculous statements and ironic positions taken by the Democrat presidential nominee. But it’s hard to even fault Joe Biden for that, seeing as though he comes from a political movement that lives by the grift. There was a time when Democrats were the party of the working man. Democrats, at least some of them, were the coal miners, the auto mechanics, the electricians. Now? Now, they’re the lobbyists, the PR consultants, the diversity coordinators, and the nonprofit apparatchiks. That party is fronted almost completely by people who don’t exist in the productive economy. The most productive Democrats in the private sector

Lost in the blinding gaslighting over President Trump’s remarks about white supremacists during this week’s presidential debate was the fact that Joe Biden proved again that he’s little more than a stand-in propped up by a compliant political press. Biden was unable to answer even the most rudimentary queries about his beliefs, never mind specifics about policy. Apologies to the Twitter expert class, but opposing Donald Trump is neither a moral doctrine nor a policy agenda. There is plenty to dislike about the president, but you rarely have to guess where he stands

A few days ago a liberal columnist for the Seattle Times wrote a good column about the collapse of small business in the downtown core of the Emerald City: “Self-inflicted wounds make Seattle’s business losses worse.” Someone in Seattle’s media is finally getting it: Shops were looted, in some cases repeatedly, this past summer. It sullies the cause of social justice protests to link the two together. The looting was pure criminality. The city’s lack of prosecution for most shoplifting is another big DIY problem. It played heavily into Macy’s decision to close before COVID-19 and is extremely costly for small retailers.

His physician reported that the president was showing mild symptoms, and on Friday evening he was taken to Walter Reed Hospital. As expected, many on the left openly celebrated Trump’s illness, wishing upon him all manner of suffering and death. In general, though, the response of mainstream Democratic players was muted, even polite. Why? Perhaps because they know a sick person (even this president) engenders sympathy among decent people, many of whom are undecided voters.
