WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange was reportedly ordered by a U.K. judge Friday to remain jailed once he finishes serving a 50-week sentence for breaching bail. Ruling from Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London, District Judge Vanessa Baraitser said Assange has a “history of absconding” and is at risk of evading a U.S. extradition request if released from prison, BBC reported. “In my view, I have substantial ground for believing if I release you, you will abscond again,” the judge ruled, according to the outlet. Assange, an Australian native, was living in the U.K. under house arrest in 2012 when he entered the Ecuadorian Embassy in London seeking asylum.

New York - A U.S. federal appeals court on Friday revived a lawsuit alleging President Donald Trump violated the U.S. Constitution by profiting from foreign and domestic officials who patronized his hotels and restaurants, adding to the corruption claims against Trump. In a 2-1 ruling, a three-judge panel of the New York-based 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals set aside a lower court ruling that had thrown out the case because the people who sued could not prove they were harmed by Trump’s actions and his role as president. Friday’s ruling dealt with preliminary questions relating to whether the case should be heard, without directly addressing whether Trump violated the law.

“Our democracy’s ideals were false when they were written.” I’ve been struggling with that sentence — the opening statement of the introductory essay to the New York Times Magazine’s 1619 Project on the legacy of slavery in America — for a few weeks now. It’s a very strange formulation. How can an enduring “ideal” — like, say, freedom or equality — be “false” at one point in history and true in another? You could of course say that the ideals of universal equality and individual liberty in the Declaration of Independence were belied and contradicted in 1776 by the unconscionable fact of widespread slavery, but that’s very different

From the first minute of last night’s truly intolerable Democratic debate, a candidate for the world’s most powerful office started things rolling downhill with a startling assertion about last month’s horrific shootings in El Paso: “22 people were killed, dozens more grievously injured by a man … inspired to kill by our president.” (Emphasis added) Later in the same debate, a sitting U.S. Senator from the nation’s largest state added the following over-the-top observation about these vile murders: “People asked me … ‘do you think Trump is responsible for what happened?’ And I said, ‘Well, look, I mean, obviously, he didn’t pull the trigger. But he’s certainly been tweeting out the ammunition.’”

Federal prosecutors in Washington have recommended that criminal charges be filed against Andrew McCabe, the FBI’s former deputy director, and the Justice Department has rejected a last-ditch appeal by McCabe’s lawyers, according to a report on Thursday by Fox News. This clears the way for what appears to be McCabe’s imminent indictment. Jesse Liu, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia (appointed by Trump), has reportedly decided that McCabe should be charged. The decision was based on a referral by the Justice Department’s inspector general (appointed by Obama), Michael Horowitz. In a comprehensive report last year, issued after a probe of a leak of investigative information

The Democrat primary has devolved into an extremism arms race to see who can adopt the most radical position.Last week’s winner, despite steep competition, was Elizabeth Warren, who tweeted out, “On my first day as president, I will sign an executive order that puts a total moratorium on all new fossil fuel leases for drilling offshore and on public lands. And I will ban fracking — everywhere.” Sundance covered ten negative effects of this action at Conservative Treehouse. The bottom line is that it would take a sledgehammer to the U.S. economy while tipping the geopolitical map in favor of the world’s worst regimes,

Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke on Thursday called on big banks and other financial institutions to cut off business with gun companies in an effort to bankrupt them. "Credit cards have enabled many of America's mass shootings in the last decade—and with Washington unwilling to act, they need to cut off the sales of weapons of war today," O'Rourke tweeted. "Banks and credit card companies must: 1. Refuse to take part in the sale of assault weapons. 2. Stop processing transactions for gun sales online & at gun shows without background checks. 3. Stop doing business with gun & ammo manufacturers who produce or sell assault weapons."

When Christine Blasey Ford testified against Brett Kavauagh last year during his confirmation hearing to sit on the Supreme Court, she had the backing of the leftist media, the #MeToo movement, the pro-abortion movement, Hollywood, Democrats in Congress and her activist attorneys. But noticeably missing from Ford's corner was her family. Now, thanks to Mollie Hemingway and Carrie Severino, we know why. Writing for The Federalist, Hemingway and Severino report Ford's father actually backed Kavanaugh's nomination. "Within days of Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court, a fascinating encounter took place.

Some criticisms of the political media, like that it fabricates allegations and makes up sources in order to embarrass our great president, are bogus. Others, such as that it oversells new “characters” and conflict-oriented storylines at the expense of conveying the full, contextualized totality of some situations, can be fair. And that critique is particularly fair right now in regard to the coverage of Bernard “Bernie” Sanders, the Brooklyn-Vermont “democratic socialist” who takes the debate stage Thursday night as one of the three leading candidates to become the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee. Given that debate performances are scrutinized for how they shape the primary “narrative,” Sanders is at a disadvantage.

Andrew McCabe is one step closer to a reckoning with justice. The Department of Justice correctly rejected the equivalent of a Hail Mary appeal from McCabe’s lawyers that he not face criminal charges for lying. U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jessie K. Liu has recommended moving forward against the fired former FBI acting director. Presenting the case to a federal grand jury is likely imminent. Lest we forget, McCabe has helped put people behind bars for lying. He should be held to the same legal standard. In a scathing condemnation of McCabe last year, the Department of Justice (DOJ) inspector general – a neutral investigator appointed

WASHINGTON — The U.S. said Thursday that it will disclose the name of a Saudi citizen sought by lawyers for victims of the Sept. 11 attacks who want to link the kingdom to the terrorist plot. Attorney General William Barr had the option of invoking a “state secrets” privilege to withhold the release of the name, which lawyers for survivors and victims’ relatives believe belongs to a Saudi government official who they say assigned two men in California to assist two of the hijackers. Instead, Justice Department lawyers said in a court filing that the FBI will make the name available to a limited circle of people that includes lawyers for survivors

It’s said that as the fourth hour of Otto Preminger’s Israel movie “Exodus” began at its premiere in 1960, the comedian Mort Sahl rose from his chair and said, “Otto, let my people go!” The audience cheered. As the Democratic debate in Houston entered its third hour last night, I rose from my chair and said, “ABC, let the American people go!” And there was no one to cheer, for I was alone in my office. Finally, there was to be one debate, 10 candidates, with frontrunners Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren facing each other at last. What happened was what Preminger’s Israelis would have called a “balagan” —

In the most contentious Democratic debate thus far, a winnowed field of 10 Democratic candidates took the stage in Houston Thursday night and sparred over hot-button issues such as health care and immigration. Notably, this was the first time that frontrunners Sen. Elizabeth Warren and former Vice President Joe Biden shared the debate stage. Warren and Biden exhibited stark differences on style, policy and vision for the Democratic Party, embodying two opposing theories of what the party should be.

During Thursday night’s Democratic presidential primary debate in Houston, former U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro attacked former Vice President Joe Biden over his health care plan, saying that it would leave many Americans uninsured.“The difference between what I support and what you support, Vice President Biden, is that you require them to opt in, and I would not require them to opt in. They would automatically be enrolled, they wouldn’t have to buy in,” Castro said to Biden.“You do not have to buy in,” Biden responds.
