It’s been exactly 66 years since Ben-Hur made movie history. On this day in 1960, the epic historical drama took home a record 11 awards at the Academy Awards, becoming the first film in history to do so at the time. Directed by William Wyler and starring Charlton Heston, Ben-Hur (1959) is a renowned Easter classic, airing each year during Christian Holy Week each year—but in addition to it’s religious significance, the film is also regarded as masterful piece of cinema. After its release in November 1959, Ben-Hur amassed a whopping 12 Oscar nominations, 11 of which it would end

Comments:

Ben-Hur is one of the greatest movies of all time. Pretty much every scene is a masterpiece.

I just watched it again on Tubi. I detest commercials but they don't last long and that movie was so good. Charlton Heston was such a great actor. It is one of the best movies I've ever seen..

We have a restored and remastered DVD that has been watched a dozen times. I occasionally remind our kids that in my youth, if you missed it, you had to wait an entire year to see it again!

You don’t get much more beautiful than Charleton Heston in “Ben Hur.” A truly great movie, well-deserved of all its Oscars. “Your eyes are full of hate, 41. That’s good. Hate keeps a man alive.”

The first movie I saw multiple times when in junior high. My friends and I started wearing long scarfs like the women in Ben-Hur's family, acting out our favorite parts. Purchased the 50th Anniversary re-master and our three grandsons loved it just as much, especially the chariot race, which was done without special effects. Fun to see their excitement!

Per #5. That chariot race was incredible and damned dangerous to the stunt guys. Every time I watch it it, I am worried that someone will get killed because the scenes are so well done.

No. 8 is correct. Makes you wonder how many real chariot racers were killed back in the past millennia. Some races were probably bloodbaths.

Many people today do not have any idea how good they've got it in our world of conveniences and expect virtually everything to be microwave speed. The humanity displayed in this movie masterpiece reminds us that the average citizen during that time had little to nothing living as virtual slaves. The "movies" today which are highly rewarded largely lack the grit portrayed in the all-time classic, and the awards given today do not carry the same virtue as the ones given to this picture. There were no Computer Generated Images, just RAW action sequences like the Chariot Race, the rowing sequence on the Arias' naval ship, or the redemption of the mother and sister who were lepers. Its majesty and glory were meant to be seen movie screens, but it remains powerful. Its so sad the length of it turns people away for pablum these days....

The City Council wants to expand the Fair Fares program so more than 1 million eligible New Yorkers would be able to ride Big Apple subways and buses all on the government’s dime. The city-funded program reimburses the MTA for 50% of the fare — a cost those earning up to 150% of the federal poverty level aren’t required to pay out of pocket — which the council has proposed covering entirely in its city budget response. The council’s response does not detail how much it would need to fully cover those fares, but advocates at the Permanent Citizens Advisory

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson drew fire from an unlikely colleague on Tuesday over her lone dissent in the Supreme Court’s 8-1 decision finding Colorado’s ban on so-called "conversion therapy" for minors violated free speech rights. Fellow liberal Justice Elena Kagan criticized Jackson for failing to acknowledge case law that governs when speech can be regulated in the medical field, marking a rare public break between two justices typically aligned in cases centered on high-profile cultural issues. "Justice Jackson’s dissenting opinion claims that this is a small, or even nonexistent, category," Kagan wrote in a footnote of a concurring opinion, which

A California gubernatorial debate was canceled just hours before it was set to occur on Tuesday after mounting criticism that only white candidates in the crowded field had qualified for the event. President Donald Trump confirmed the rescue at 12:09 a.m. Sunday on Truth Social, declaring, “WE GOT HIM!”
