The leader of a trade group that represents most major automakers called on the federal government to eliminate its gasoline tax and replace it with a vehicle fee to finance road infrastructure needs.
Alliance for Automotive Innovation CEO John Bozzella, whose group represents automakers such as General Motors, Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai and other leading car manufacturers, put forward a proposal that urged the federal government to address the growing shortfall in the Highway Trust Fund with a vehicle fee.
The proposal would function like a vehicle registration fee that’s assessed on all vehicles based on their weight, and was first reported by Reuters. It comes as the federal government’s

Sounds good but in real life if implemented states would just raise their tax rate on fuel.

So they want it to be a property tax, not a use tax. You may be able to afford this vehicle, but we will continue to charge you for the privilege of ownership.

Totally inappropriate. A loaded truck weighs 80k pounds v an unloaded truck of 20,000 pounds. A highway truck runsc300 miles per day, a care averages 300 miles per day. Damage ratio, loaded truck to car, miles x weight, is 80000x300/(4000x50), or120 orv120 to 1, while the proposal,is suggesting a mere 5/1

Re #2 - that's how one's car is taxed here in Virginia - as personal property. Every year the owner gets a tax bill based on the Blue Book value of your car (and of course, it's always on the high end of the estimated value). My 2015 Acura with over 100,000 miles on it cost me $225.00 last October and would have cost almost double that amount but a decade or so ago a Republican Governor signed a car tax relief bill waiving a percentage of your car tax bill. Zero incentive to buy a new car in this state.

This allows for Battery Heavy EV's to pay their "Fair Share".
I'd be in favor of a "Roads Rhetoric" Tax/Fee...everytime any politician or Activist mentions, fuel changes, fossil fuels, climate change, high speed transportation, smart roads, HOV,Mass Transit, Soundwalls, Roundabouts, "Spending/Investment" increases...they pay $100/syllable.

This is not a good idea. Two things effect the wear and tare caused by vehicles on roads and highways— vehicle weight and miles driven.

The gas tax is a pay as you go program and has to be paid, a once a year “registration” fee where someone mails a check in is optional in a lot of people’s minds. Good luck collecting it.

Not a good idea. A fuel tax is more appropriate. It is proportional to weight and miles driven. Of course EVs don’t use petroleum fuels, but they could implement a charging tax on all EV charging stations, including home stations.

I think we'd see a lot more fatalities on the highways as people started driving light tin-cans and were getting creamed by massive semis!

All governments have an insatiable lust for more tax revenue. It's usually kept in check with local governments whose elected officials have an aversion to tar and feathers. State and national governments can get away with more by using the old saying we have here, "Don't tax you, don't tax me, tax that man behind the tree".

I can live with the federal gas tax. Its the state, PA, that should go away. Our roads suck, which g I es to sh I w that the money allegedly for roads, is being pumped into the general fund, only to be pi@#ed away on stupid stuff.

The auto/truck fees are supposed to pay for roads...Heavier vehicles wear out roads faster. Agree on weight tax vs. gas tax!
Everyone paying for the same thing but some do more road damage is just another Communist Idea, the same as tax rates being different depending on how much you earn.........

I’ve always paid personnel property tax and sales tax on vehicles over the last 50 years. I’m surprised some states don’t. As your car ages the tax declines dramatically It’s a big hit the first year. Of course sales tax is a good negotiating point.
The EV tax is not what it once was as many ICE vehicles get 40mpg bs 50 for EVs. A blanket EV needs to factor this in.

If business and politicians are conniving to fix a 'hole' in their budgets, you know we're in for more hands in our pockets. My smallish SUV weighs as much or more than my 1960's full size cars. It has so many government 'safety gizmos' in it.

This is just moving pennies around under walnut shells. Heavier vehicles use more gasoline so the results will be exactly the same. How could there possibly be a shortfall in revenue when I have been driving around potholes for such a long time? Could it be (gasp) fraud and incompetence?

No government ever willingly gives up revenue.
My prediction: they'll add the new weight tax with a "promise" to "phase out" the gas tax over time. 200 years in the future, people will still be waiting for the gas tax "phase out" to occur.

Better idea: End all such taxes!

I'm with #21.
The politicians will impose the new tax if they think they can get away with it, but the old tax will remain.
As my Dad taught me:
A Tax, once Imposed, is NEVER repealed!

So some 70yr old who drives 3,000 miles a year will pay the same as a 30 year old who drives 20,000 miles a year because they have the same car? If you charged a gas tax, wouldn't THAT be more fair?

Gas taxes are controlled by State governments. They will have to persuade 50 Governors and State Legislators to fall for this or get a conservative Supreme Court to convert it to a Federal tax in which case the State loses all gas tax revenues and it gets doled out politically. This isn’t going to happen.

#24; Gas tax already does that. Drive more pay more tax, etc. In the Olden Days, gas pumps had a sign on them that displayed where the money went.
Gas: .25
State tax: .05
Fed tax: .06
Total: .36/gal
Every few years the state would raise it by 5 cents or so for 'Road Improvements'

They are thinking of all those EVs that don't use gas and they are heavier than regular cars because of all those batteries. They won't scrap the gas tax, btw. The government loves its taxes. Besides, they have to find new ways to pay for all the out of control and corrupt spending.
