The City Council wants to expand the Fair Fares program so more than 1 million eligible New Yorkers would be able to ride Big Apple subways and buses all on the government’s dime. The city-funded program reimburses the MTA for 50% of the fare — a cost those earning up to 150% of the federal poverty level aren’t required to pay out of pocket — which the council has proposed covering entirely in its city budget response. The council’s response does not detail how much it would need to fully cover those fares, but advocates at the Permanent Citizens Advisory

A second Somali fraudster, who stole half a million dollars, was handed a mere six months in jail by a Minneapolis judge, just a day after one of her co-conspirators was sentenced to a year. Zamzam Jama was ordered to pay back $491,000 and will spend half a year in jail for her role in the Feeding Our Future scandal on Tuesday, Kare 11 reporter Lou Raguse reported. She was sentenced by Judge Nancy Brasel, who gave her co-conspirator Abdul Abubakar Ali a one-year sentence just the day before. Jama and Abubaker are just two of the dozens of fraudsters

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson drew fire from an unlikely colleague on Tuesday over her lone dissent in the Supreme Court’s 8-1 decision finding Colorado’s ban on so-called "conversion therapy" for minors violated free speech rights. Fellow liberal Justice Elena Kagan criticized Jackson for failing to acknowledge case law that governs when speech can be regulated in the medical field, marking a rare public break between two justices typically aligned in cases centered on high-profile cultural issues. "Justice Jackson’s dissenting opinion claims that this is a small, or even nonexistent, category," Kagan wrote in a footnote of a concurring opinion, which

Chicago police are warning about a spike in car thefts across the Loop, and the manager of some of the lots dealing with the thefts said the problem is worse than police have said. (Snip) Despite having security cameras on their lots, he said thieves aren't deterred, stealing cars morning, afternoon, or night. "That's how bold and blatant they are. They will just walk right in front of a camera, and sometimes they'll even look right in the camera," he said. A few of his lots are listed in a recent alert from Chicago Police, warning of a series of

ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel was called out for mocking newly confirmed Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin as an "unqualified" plumber during his monologue Tuesday night. "Trump's got a whole new generation of thinkers lined up, including his newly confirmed secretary of Homeland Security, Markwayne ‘Chuck Mike Bruce Dave’ Melon — Mullin. Maybe melon's better," Kimmel said. "He's the now former senator of Oklahoma. Before he was elected to the Senate, Markwayne Mullin was a low-level MMA fighter and a plumber. That's right. We have a plumber protecting us from terrorism now. It worked for Super Mario.

A CNN reporter was left stunned after security checkpoint wait times dropped from hours to minutes at a major Atlanta airport following President Trump’s deployed ICE agents to assist unpaid TSA agents. Senior National Correspondent Ryan Young reported in disbelief that the presence of unmasked immigration agents at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport sparked a dramatic shift, with travelers zipping through security after weeks of grueling lines amid the partial government shutdown. “Wolf, I almost can’t believe I’m able to say this, the times have dropped off tremendously this morning,” Young told anchor Wolf Blitzer Tuesday morning from inside the major

A California gubernatorial debate was canceled just hours before it was set to occur on Tuesday after mounting criticism that only white candidates in the crowded field had qualified for the event. The criteria to participate in the debate, which was set to be co-sponsored by the University of Southern California and the Los Angeles TV station KABC, had emerged in recent days as a source of controversy in the wide-open race to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom. The sprawling field includes eight prominent Democrats and two major Republicans, as well as several other lesser-known candidates. USC had faced condemnation for

MANCHESTER, N.H. — A poll from the Saint Anselm College Survey Center shows that Secretary of State Marco Rubio is gaining support among New Hampshire voters in the 2028 race for the White House. The last time Rubio saw this kind of movement in New Hampshire, he was on the campaign trail. (Snip) On the Democratic side, former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg is carving out his own space at the top. Last year, Saint Anselm had him tied with California Gov. Gavin Newsom, but now, Buttigieg is ahead, 29% to 15%. The poll of Democratic voters has a margin of

Washington — The Senate confirmed Markwayne Mullin as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security on Monday, finalizing President Trump's shakeup of DHS following months of scrutiny of Kristi Noem's leadership. In a 54-45 vote, the Senate confirmed Mullin, an Oklahoma Republican who's been in the Senate since 2023. Democratic Sens. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania and Martin Heinrich of New Mexico voted in favor of Mullin's confirmation. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky was the sole Republican to oppose Mullin.
The upheaval at DHS culminated in Noem's ouster as secretary earlier this month. Noem's handling of two deadly shootings by federal agents

After putting an aggressive redraw of the state’s congressional map before voters, some Virginia Democrats are growing uneasy about its prospects for passage one month out from the special election. (Snip) Some supporters of the Virginia referendum acknowledge the challenge of convincing voters to back a gerrymandered map when Democrats, who several years ago backed the formation of the state’s bipartisan redistricting commission, have criticized Republicans for similar moves. Virginia voters are also not accustomed to going to the polls in April, when Democrats scheduled the special election, making turnout particularly unpredictable. And recent polling showing mixed views of the
