Air Force’s ‘Big Sexy’ aerial refueler
will fly no more starting next year

The world’s skies will be a little less sexy starting next year. The Air Force on Sept. 1, 2024, will retire its fleet of KC-10A Extenders, aerial refuelers that can also transport troops or cargo, an Air Force news release said. [snip] The KC-10 can carry 170,000 pounds of cargo and 356,000 pounds of fuel with a maximum takeoff weight of 590,000 pounds, compared with 212,299 pounds of fuel and 65,000 pounds of cargo for the KC-46, according to Air Force fact sheets.

Comments:

The KC-46 also replaces the human boom operator in the aft end of the plane with a series of cameras. The story is that the composite image presented to an operator in the forward end contains latency and is often of poorer resolution than the human eye, resulting in occasional strikes to the receiving aircraft and damage to their stealth coatings. At least the Air Force was able to dodge McCain's Airbus refueler.

HUH? "The KC-10 can carry 170,000 pounds of cargo and 356,000 pounds of fuel... compared with 212,299 pounds of fuel and 65,000 pounds of cargo for the KC-46, according to Air Force fact sheets." The new one can handle 170,000 pounds of cargo and 356,000 pounds of fuel. It replaces one that can handle 65,000 pounds of cargo and 212,299 pounds of fuel. Have I got that bass ackwards? The boom operator will have to use a device, a rear-view camera which can fail, instead of his direct eyeball sight which has worked well since the hunter-gatherer days. Nothing in the press release about greater range. Maybe it's inferior too. Has the Air Force ever before replaced an aircraft with an inferior one or is this what passes for 21st century progress?

Stars and Stripes looks kind of sloppy these days, compared to what I recall of it from the '80s. Our heavy equipment seems less robust and capable than the preceding generation, too. Even our woman officers used to be more authentic than today... Sheesh, seems like everything in the military is inferior. Some say we should be worried about China attacking while our readiness is poor. But it's so poor these days, I'd even worry about Grand Fenwick attacking,..

The -10 has been gradually drawing down for some time now. My nephew turned wrenches on her at McGuire, and told me he had the sad duty of launching two of them to the boneyard over the past year. Will never forget the first time I joined up to refuel off of the 10. Had been on the KC-135 many times, so we move into what we thought was "pre-contact" position (about 50 feet back from the boom). The sight picture looked close to what the -135 looked like. The boom says, "Uhh, I need you to move in about another 30 feet!" The KC-10 was huge in the windscreen... Farewell old friend; you served long, honorably and well.

I was staiioned at Plattburgh AFVm NY i 1956 and 1957, as a medic. The base had a wibg of B47s, two of which disappeared while flying along Northern Soviet borders, never to be talked about again. (Curtis LeMay was commanding general of Strategic Air Command, who believed one third of our bombers should be armed, and in the air, at any given time.) The boom operator on a KC refueling aircraft was called Casey, becausee 'Casey lowers the the boom.'

Francis’ comments were an acknowledgment of the divisions in the U.S. Catholic Church, which has been split between progressives and conservatives who long found support in the doctrinaire papacies of St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI, particularly on issues of abortion and same-sex marriage. Many conservatives have blasted Francis’ emphasis instead on social justice issues such as the environment and the poor, while also branding as heretical his opening to letting divorced and civilly remarried
