The very short answer, as revealed in this story published yesterday by the NY Times, is politics. The attempt to build the first bullet train in the US between San Francisco and Los Angeles almost immediately turned into a boondoggle thanks to decisions that made no sense in terms of efficiency or ridership but only in terms of satisfying powerful politicians.
The design for the nation’s most ambitious infrastructure project was never based on the easiest or most direct route. Instead, the train’s path out of Los Angeles was diverted across a second mountain range to the rapidly growing suburbs of the Mojave Desert

More than 20 states have begun deploying military troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to assist federal agents responding to the border crisis since President Joe Biden took office.
National Guard soldiers will be deployed on 400-day deployments, bringing them back home before Thanksgiving 2023. The deployments were at the request of the federal government, though the Biden administration has made no public announcement about soliciting military help from states.

I wasn’t sure what to expect in the debate between Democrat Rep. Tim Ryan and political newcomer J.D. Vance in the campaign for the open Senate seat in Ohio. Ryan, who has been in Congress for nearly 20 years, has decades of debates under his belt, so I wondered if Vance would be able to keep up. I needn’t have worried. Not only was Vance well prepared for the debate, but he landed blow after blow after blow against Ryan, portraying him as an out-of-touch liberal who takes his marching order from the radical left—at the expense of his constituents in the state’s Rust Belt. During a portion of an interview with CBS News aired on Monday’s edition of “Red and Blue,” Sen. They’re worried about the economy. They’re worried about inflation.” He also said that Democrats “have an outside shot of winning the House.”

A month ago it seemed we were headed for a major rail strike as unions were holding out against a labor contract that included a 24% raise. Amtrak even started canceling trains in expectation of the strike but then, at the last moment, unions accepted a deal.
The tentative deal — confirmed by a group representing freight rail operators — still faces several steps before it is formally ratified. The unions must still vote on it, but the White House’s blessing of the new terms suggests that the worker groups have been closely involved. Often, the next step of the process can take several weeks, but

The Republican governor has allocated all but $150 million of the money, announcing over the past year police bonuses, high-speed internet and sewer projects, debit cards for low-income Georgians, money for housing and business programs, and desperately needed funding for Grady Memorial Hospital, among other things.

In a move sure to raise a few eyebrows, Colorado has “accidentally” sent out 30,000 voter registration cards to non-citizens. That’s according to a report from Colorado Public Radio.
According to the outlet, the 30,000 cards were sent to non-citizens because of a mix-up with the formatting of the query involving DMV records. In Colorado, illegal immigrants are able to obtain a driver’s license, which was apparently the nexus of the issue.
The postcards were mailed to residents last week who had non-citizen Colorado driver’s licenses. The state sends postcards every two years to Coloradans it believes are eligible to vote but not yet registered.

The effectiveness of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine against infection turns negative over time, according to a new study that was funded by the vaccine maker.
The effectiveness of three doses—a primary series and a booster—against infection remained above 50 percent after 150 days against BA.1, a subvariant of the Omicron virus variant, researchers estimated.
But against more recent strains, including the currently-dominant BA.5, the effectiveness turned negative.
Against BA.2, BA.4, and BA.5, the effectiveness went negative after 150 days.
Against BA.1.12.1, the effectiveness turned negative after 91 days.
Negative effectiveness means a vaccinated person is more likely to contract COVID-19, the disease the virus causes, than an unvaccinated person.

Incumbent Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski is in danger of losing the seat she has held for two decades to a challenger from her own party backed by former President Trump. A Republican has roughly a 99% chance to win next month's Alaska senate election, with Republican challenger Kelly C. Tshibaka considered mostly likely to emerge with the victory at 53%, according to election forecaster FiveThirtyEight.
Tshibaka, a Trump-backed Republican challenger who previously served as a commissioner of the Alaska Department of Administration, is currently locked in a tight battle with Murkowski after the incumbent senator generated controversy by supporting the impeachment of former President Trump

Polls infamously don’t tell the whole story regarding an election. They’re effectively using a sample of people to gauge the voting population’s mood before they head to the voting booth to pull the lever. One trusted pollster who tends to get it right more than others is sounding the alarm that polls during the midterm election season are a bit off and is warning Democrats, in particular, that their leads in many polls aren’t as strong as they may think.
According to the Daily Wire, Trafalgar group founder and senior strategist Robert Cahaly sat down with the site’s new show “Election Wire,” where Cahaly noted that Republicans are being severely underrepresented

U.S.-based economists Ben Bernanke, Douglas Diamond and Philip Dybvig were awarded the Nobel prize in economic sciences for 2022 for their research on banks and financial crises.
Bernanke was chairman of the Federal Reserve from 2006 to 2014 and is now at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. Diamond is a professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, and Dybvig is a professor at the Olin Business School of Washington University in St. Louis. The Nobel committee said their work in the early 1980s had "significantly improved our understanding of the role of banks in the economy, particularly during financial crises," and in showing why it is vital

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday promised “harsh” retaliation in response to future attacks after an explosion disabled a major bridge connecting Crimea to Russia.
Speaking at a security council meeting, Putin called the Kerch bridge blast a “terrorist attack aimed at the destruction of civil critical important infrastructure of Russia.” Ukraine has not yet claimed responsibility.
A massive explosion on Saturday heavily damaged a bridge which Russia relied upon for transporting military supplies to Crimea, cutting off a critical route and dealing a major setback to Putin’s war effort in Ukraine. Putin opened the bridge in 2018 in a gesture meant to signify Russia’s ownership of Crimea,

The impact of hormone therapy on the heart health of transgender men and women has been the subject of several studies published within the last year. But medical experts and researchers aren’t ready to sound the alarm just yet even do there are more than enough cases where people are not looking good and have health issues.
One study found that transgender women who take hormones were more than twice as likely to have a stroke and deep vein clots compared to cisgender men and women

Were the fate of the free world not in the hands of this man, the setting of Joe Biden’s many dementia moments to a catchy tune would be hilarious. Actually, it still is hilarious despite the awful reality underlying it. This is a brilliant satire that is also self-evidently accurate.
Whoever came up with the tune, the selection of clips, and the electronic means of making Biden’s voice follow the music did a wonderful job. It is so catchy that it is staying in my mind with the chorus, “My mind’s going blank now” repeating endlessly, a political ear worm of devastating impact.
There is no effective response

Ukraine - The past few hours have seen wave after wave of explosions, not just here in Kyiv, but all across this vast country, from Lviv in the west to Kharkiv in the east and Odesa in the south. For those of us who were here when Russia's full-scale invasion began in February, there's an element of déjà vu. We've been told to spend as much time as we can in the basement, as further attacks, using missiles and drones, are expected. But this is also different. The explosions here in Kyiv are much closer to the centre. Not distant

A college dad shot by two homeless men high on drugs and long sought by police. An illegal migrant who stabbed eight on the Las Vegas strip. An abused wife slaughtered after her husband was released without cash bail.
In a single week, the Democrats' permissive approach to law enforcement — insecure borders, cashless bail and exploding homelessness — left a lethal wake of innocent victims that shook communities coast to coast and invigorated a political debate less than 30 days from mid-term elections.

The Democrat media, in conjunction with their allies in the polling industry, have driven the false narrative that the Democrats are likely to defy both history and their historically awful record and do fairly well in the midterms, particularly in Senate races.
To borrow a word from Mr. 10%, this has always been malarkey. We go through this same dance every cycle where the polls miraculously start to shift towards the Republicans in the last month, as polling outfits grudgingly start moving towards something resembling reality to avoid copious amounts of eggs on their face.
But, even at that, the polls during this cycle are likely the worst

Education Secretary Miguel Cardona is fixated on equity-based education and seems to be ignoring academic priorities as students nationwide are experiencing a “catastrophic” decline in literacy which will have severe consequences down the line.
Learning advocates and parents are slamming President Biden’s education secretary for not even bothering to mention academics in a statement of priorities in connection with the Department of Education’s annual report card, according to Fox News. It shockingly shows the largest score drop in reading among 9-year-old students since 1990.
The DOE has been dumping hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars into woke, equity-focused programs and grants

Tyson Foods has become the latest company to shutter its Chicago-area offices in response to rampant crime seen under progressive Mayor Lori Lightfoot, joining Boeing, Caterpillar, and several others to turn tail and flee the Windy City.
The chicken giant made the bombshell announcement Wednesday, revealing it’s bringing together its corporate employees at its global headquarters in Arkansas, and closing down three of its offices, including one in Downtown Chicago.
The other two include a location in nearby Downers Grove, a suburb just outside the city, and in Dakota Dunes in South Dakota.

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin insisted Sunday that there is nothing “controversial” about the state’s new school policy requiring students to use bathrooms or play for sports teams that correspond to their biological sex and not their gender identity.
“This is not controversial,” Youngkin, a Republican, said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
He added that it is an issue parents should be deciding for their kids, at least when it comes to the bathrooms, instead of a blanket policy decided by the schools.

Concerns over President Joe Biden’s recent very public displays of possibly age-related mental impairments have jumped among voters since mid-summer, the latest I&I/TIPP Poll shows. And these worries aren’t partisan, with a majority of all political groups, including Democrats, now expressing concern.
In early August, we asked Americans: “Some people are concerned about President Biden’s mental health. How concerned are you about President Biden’s mental health?” At the time, a number of public displays of unsteadiness, confusion, and verbal gaffes seen in the media suggested to many that the nation’s commander-in-chief’s mental acuity was questionable.

“First we have to win a historic victory for the Republican Party this November,” he told the huge crowd during his Save America Rally in Mesa, Arizona.
“Job number one for Republican Congress is to stop the invasion and that’s what it is. It’s like a military invasion.

The Cleveland Indians are the most exciting team in baseball. They have 10 rookies on their 26-man roster. Six others were rookies last year. They play small ball and win. They are managed by Tito Francona Jr., a grandpa who led the Boston Red Sox in 2004 to their first World Series championship in 86 years.
Fans in Cleveland shun the Cleveland Indians this year.
That's because the team is not the Cleveland Indians. Management caved in to Woke Know Nothings and changed the name to Guardians this year. Attendance was 25th among the 30 major league teams.

During the current Ukrainian war, the media has created a mythology that the Left was tough on Vladimir Putin’s Russia. And thus, now it simply continues its hard-nosed efforts in Ukraine.
But nothing could be further from the truth. Aside from Biden’s original panic of evacuating American diplomatic personnel from Kyiv, offering a ride out of Ukraine for the Zelenskyy government that would have effectively collapsed his nation’s resistance, and hesitation in selling Ukraine offensive weapons, there is also a prior legacy that had done a great deal of harm.
Indeed, many of America’s current difficulties in Ukraine originate from the Obama-Biden Administration’s former disastrous policies toward Russia birthed between 2009-2016.

Americans have long since come to expect debates between candidates for major public office. For many voters, these encounters provide the only opportunity to see how competing candidates comport themselves in a venue that is nominally beyond their control. In close contests, these debates can sometimes be crucial to the final outcome. Yet, as the November midterms rapidly approach, many Democrats have been extremely reluctant to meet their Republican opponents face-to-face on a debate stage. Indeed, in several high-profile contests, they have flatly refused to do so.
