Queen Elizabeth II, the only British monarch who resided on the throne for 70 years, died Sept. 8 at Balmoral, her royal castle in Scotland, one year after her husband, Prince Philip, passed away at age 99. Elizabeth, who was 96, and Philip had four kids: King Charles III, 73; Princess Anne, 72; Prince Andrew, 62; and Prince Edward, 58. Following news of her death, Charles, who immediately became king, shared a statement that was released by Buckingham Palace. I hope Anne takes a bigger role. She strongly resembles Elizabeth but doesn't mind clashing with the media.

This is so sad. She was a remarkable woman who knew her duty and did it. King Charles III - that will take a little getting used to.

Queens do not give birth to baby goats (kids). They have children. Why do we always use "kids" to describe children nowadays...especially when it isn't appropriate?

I suppose 3rd-rate actress Meghan will do her Oscar performance mourning in front of the media and the Netflix camera. And Harry? A lifetime of regrets for not making peace with his grandmother.

Perhaps "male jackasses" instead of "kids" is a better choice of words.

I have read that Phillip was a cousin of Elizabeth, although I don't know how close a cousin. That term gets too widely/vaguely used, IMO. Marrying cousins is not a good policy. Looking at the kids seems to bear that out. In the USA, I've always used it for the offspring of my father's siblings or mother's siblings, a pretty close relation. But there are 2nd cousins and then you get into the "once removed" and "twice removed" or other strange stuff that I never bothered to understand, not caring much about genealogy. Perhaps Phillip was a bunch "removed", but I still think that continually marrying cousins is bad business.

Pennsylvania Senate hopeful Dr. Mehmet Oz put his midterm foe, John Fetterman, on blast for issuing a "head fake" offer for a debate that is likely to occur after Pennsylvanians begin casting early votes. Following weeks of intensifying pressure on Fetterman to debate Oz, the lieutenant governor finally relented this week and loosely committed to a showdown with the celebrity doctor despite his stroke-induced ailments. Oz had ramped up pressure on Fetterman to appear opposite him in a public forum, but he was left despondent with the debate offer. "There is no John Fetterman debate offer. Debates have to be

Russian tyrant Vladimir Putin has threatened to cut off Europe’s energy supplies completely. He vowed to axe all “gas, coal and heating oil” if the EU imposes a price cap this winter. He fumed: “We will not supply anything.” The Kremlin chief blasted EU plans as “stupid” and vowed Russia would renege on deals to supply gas through the Nord Stream pipeline. Addressing a forum in Vladivostok, he said: “Will there be any political decisions that contradict the contracts? Yes, we just won’t fulfil them. We will not supply anything at all if it contradicts our interests.” Quoting a Russian

John Fetterman, the Pennsylvania Democratic candidate for Senate, signaled that he'd be open to debating his Republican counterpart Mehmet Oz – under some conditions. In a statement sent to Insider, Fetterman said, "We're absolutely going to debate Dr. Oz, and that was really always our intent to do that." According to Politico, Oz had called for debates in early September. And at a recent rally alongside former President Donald Trump, Oz criticized Fetterman's health and accused him of using drugs. Fetterman had a stroke in May while on the campaign trail, and returned to action in August. He added in his

Electric vehicle owners are caught in confusion as conflicting reports of energy conservation requests and wildfire evacuation warnings sweep California. Newsweek reported last week that much of southern California remains under an excessive heat warning, with the state's grid operator warning high temperatures could lead to blackouts. A prolonged heat wave has temperatures expected to reach as high as 115 degrees Fahrenheit in some parts, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Concurrently, wildfires threaten various parts of the state. Evacuation warnings are in place for several cities. Cal Fire Battalion Chief Issac Sanchez urges electric vehicle owners to not

NEWNAN, Ga. — Georgia Democrats have grown increasingly pessimistic about Stacey Abrams’s chances of ousting Gov. Brian Kemp from office, pointing to her struggles to rally key parts of her party’s coalition and her inability to appeal to a slice of moderate Republican voters who can decide the state’s elections. Public and private polls have consistently shown her trailing Mr. Kemp, a Republican seeking a second term. And, in a particularly worrying sign for Ms. Abrams, polls also show she is drawing less support than the other high-profile Democrat on the ballot, Senator Raphael Warnock, who is seeking a first

Pennsylvania lieutenant governor and U.S. Senate candidate John Fetterman has not fully recovered from the serious stroke he suffered in May. His campaign has acknowledged his obvious struggles with “auditory processing” and speech, but the persistence of those struggles has contrasted with the campaign’s rosier predictions of a return to the rigors of campaigning, including debating his opponent, Mehmet Oz. If Mr. Fetterman is not well enough to debate his opponent, that raises serious concerns about his ability to serve as a United States senator. None of this excuses the antics of Mr. Oz’s campaign, which has decided that their

Biden may not have faced explicit primary threats, but a handful of younger Democrats whose profile was rising seemed to be holding themselves out as more passionate, forceful leaders for the party, as governors like Gavin Newsom of California and J.B. Joe Manchin cast the deciding vote for the so-called Inflation Reduction Act, and it may end up costing him his political career if a new poll is to be believed. Manchin, who had originally pledged not to sign on to any new spending bill during the country’s current inflationary boom, suddenly switched his position at the end of July. The bill he negotiated, which cost nearly a trillion dollars, was full of wasteful green energy subsidies and payouts to special interests. It also represented a stabbing in the back of Republican senators who had trusted him to keep his word about reconciliation after voting for the CHIPS Act.

Because most people don’t know a farmer personally anymore, everyone should realize that they don’t make piles of money producing our food. A good year can be followed by three bad ones, and 2022 has been a burden. Between record heat waves in the U.S. and abroad, droughts in the middle of the country, fertilizer shortages, and rising costs for just about every farm input, many American farms are on the brink. Everyone will feel the pinch in continued food price increases and shortages at the store. As bad as the agricultural outlook is in America, it is far worse in Europe.
