The Dubious History of the Name 'King Charles' 0 replies
Posted by NorthernDog 9/10/2022 9:36:24 AM Post Reply
King Charles III, who ascended to the throne on Thursday, has chosen to rule with the name he was given at birth. But as a British king it comes with baggage. Charles I, born in 1600, endured a stormy reign that ended with his execution 49 years later. In between, he provoked a civil war and erased the notion of an all-powerful monarchy—or indeed, of any monarchy at all for the 11 years after his beheading outside Banqueting House in London. Charles II, his son, chose to lay low on the European continent for what came to be known

Pennsylvania Senate hopeful Dr. Mehmet Oz put his midterm foe, John Fetterman, on blast for issuing a "head fake" offer for a debate that is likely to occur after Pennsylvanians begin casting early votes. Following weeks of intensifying pressure on Fetterman to debate Oz, the lieutenant governor finally relented this week and loosely committed to a showdown with the celebrity doctor despite his stroke-induced ailments. Oz had ramped up pressure on Fetterman to appear opposite him in a public forum, but he was left despondent with the debate offer. "There is no John Fetterman debate offer. Debates have to be

John Fetterman, the Pennsylvania Democratic candidate for Senate, signaled that he'd be open to debating his Republican counterpart Mehmet Oz – under some conditions. In a statement sent to Insider, Fetterman said, "We're absolutely going to debate Dr. Oz, and that was really always our intent to do that." According to Politico, Oz had called for debates in early September. And at a recent rally alongside former President Donald Trump, Oz criticized Fetterman's health and accused him of using drugs. NEWNAN, Ga. — Georgia Democrats have grown increasingly pessimistic about Stacey Abrams’s chances of ousting Gov. Public and private polls have consistently shown her trailing Mr. Kemp, a Republican seeking a second term. And, in a particularly worrying sign for Ms. Abrams, polls also show she is drawing less support than the other high-profile Democrat on the ballot, Senator Raphael Warnock, who is seeking a first

Pennsylvania lieutenant governor and U.S. Senate candidate John Fetterman has not fully recovered from the serious stroke he suffered in May. His campaign has acknowledged his obvious struggles with “auditory processing” and speech, but the persistence of those struggles has contrasted with the campaign’s rosier predictions of a return to the rigors of campaigning, including debating his opponent, Mehmet Oz. If Mr. Fetterman is not well enough to debate his opponent, that raises serious concerns about his ability to serve as a United States senator. None of this excuses the antics of Mr. Oz’s campaign, which has decided that their

Amid the personal family tragedy on Thursday, a small domestic drama was playing out. Unsurprisingly, it involved the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. It was a fortunate coincidence of sorts that Harry and Meghan were in the country when the prince's grandmother passed away, sparing him an emotional and undoubtedly traumatic transatlantic dash as the Queen's health failed. Despite the rancour of the past few years, no one would begrudge him the chance to mourn his beloved 'Granny', with whom he had always enjoyed a warm and fun-loving relationship. To try and head off a likely loss of the House of Representatives and prepare for the next presidential election, Democrats create situations which raise anxiety in citizens, and this increases the chances their candidate will prevail because voters know discord will then subside. An example is Kathy Griffin’s widely read statement: “If you don’t want a Civil War, vote for Democrats in November. If you do want Civil War, vote Republican.” They make it very clear your life will only be peaceful if you keep Democrats in power, and they think that this is persuasive enough to tip elections.

The firearms maker on Thursday had reported net sales to $84.4 million for its fiscal first quarter, a decrease of 69% from the same time last year. Smith & Wesson Chief Executive Officer Mark Smith blamed the "challenging" quarter on the return to normal demand levels and the company needing to correct inventory levels. "The industry experienced our first normal summer slowdown in three years," Smith said in a press release. Additionally, he said manufacturer orders were "artificially depressed" as the company's partners sold through existing inventories.
