Washington—President Donald Trump told his attorney general and top GOP lawmakers he will not extend surveillance authorities that expire this month unless Congress sends him a bill that incorporates reforms, according to a senator present for the Tuesday night meeting at the White House. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who has led efforts to curtail the federal government's ability to spy on Americans, said Trump "made it exceedingly clear" he will not accept a straight re-authorization of the surveillance provisions. Trump wants changes before he will sign the bill into law, Paul said.(Snip) Another person familiar with the meeting confirmed the account.

President Trump has rightly won praise from medical professionals and public health officials for taking tough action, even against leftist criticism, for effectively protecting the U.S. from the ravages of the coronavirus.
Nations that didn't do that, such as China itself — which hid the crisis, enabling its spread; South Korea — which kowtowed to China; and possibly Japan and Italy, are now reaping severe consequences. Thomas Lifson wrote about the left's criticism here, and I wrote about Trump's sharp recognition of a threat when he sees one here.

It would take a heart of stone not to laugh at the Democrats' current dilemma. The party of racial diversity has only white candidates. The party of youth has only old candidates. The party's top candidate is an angry, spit-flecked, wild-maned old man who has been a Marxist his entire life, has never held a real job in the private sector, is now hypocritically reveling in the life of a millionaire and can't stop himself from praising grotesque dictators.
And here's the biggest laugh of all: the Democrat party's only hope is a confused old man whose corruption is oozing into the open

Brokered conventions are the fan fiction of political junkies. They’re rich in dramatic possibilities, and can fill a mundane process with intrigue. In every presidential election, the prospect of a brokered convention is raised not because it is likely but because it is fun to discuss the what-ifs and to imagine the convention as something other than the choreographed boredom it has become.
But now that a convention beginning without a clear nominee is more plausible, the amusing hypothetical has given way to a nightmarish reality. A contested convention would be an opportunity for a political party to tear itself to pieces on live television.

Bernie Sanders faced more pointed attacks last night over his potential vulnerabilities than he ever has at a debate. But the blustery and disorderly session once again failed to fully explore what could be the Vermont senator’s greatest general-election weakness: the massive size and scope of his spending and tax proposals, which, depending on the estimate, would cost $50 trillion to $60 trillion over the next 10 years. That would roughly double the size of the federal government, an unprecedented increase outside of wartime.
More so than in any previous session, Sanders at times seemed rattled and tentative as his rivals subjected him to a crossfire of criticism—

Heading out of the Nevada primary last week, the Democratic Party establishment was in a bit of a panic. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., had gotten the most votes in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada. The establishment’s initial pick for the nomination, former Vice President Joe Biden, had been struggling for months on the campaign trail, sometimes seeming to be confused about who and where he was.(Snip)If the establishment really wanted to defeat Sanders, they had to figure out something big and figure it out quickly.

Good for you, you got out of the house and went to vote. You even voted early. Maybe you got a sticker. As you cast that ballot for Pete Buttigieg or Amy Klobuchar you knew you were doing your civic duty. And now it doesn’t matter at all. Your vote might as well be a scratch off ticket that almost won discarded on the sidewalk.
This of course is the problem with early voting. The justification for early voting is that it encourages participation in our electoral process, (Snip) what good does it do for anyone to cast a vote for a candidate who is no longer in the race.

The attempt to hang coronavirus around the neck of the president is a movement that has gone from a standing start to neck-snapping speed, as opportunities to discredit Donald Trump in the American media generally do.
He was criticized for acting early in restricting access from potentially vulnerable countries, and after for having short-changing the relevant government agencies, even though that didn’t happen. Even the brickbat-wielding Washington Post has had to make the point that, in fact, Trump increased the allocations to public health and disease control authorities.

The Federal Reserve slashed interest rates by half a percentage point on Tuesday, a bold attempt to give the US economy a jolt in the face of concerns about the coronavirus outbreak. It was the first unscheduled, emergency rate cut since 2008, and it also marks the biggest one-time cut since then. The new benchmark interest rate is 1% to 1.25%. Although the fundamentals of the US economy remain strong, "the coronavirus poses evolving risks to economic activity," the central bank said in a statement. Just last week, several Fed officials said it was too early to cut rates in the face of the global virus outbreak.

BOGOTA - Colombia’s Constitutional Court ruled on Monday against legalizing abortions in up to the first 16 weeks of pregnancy and said the procedure would continue to be allowed in just three specific cases. The decision dashed the hopes of those who had looked to see abortion legalized in Colombia. The Andean country is part of a region that has some of the world’s strictest reproductive rights laws.
The court rejected a case that looked to return the country to a ban on the practice in all circumstances, but also said it would not make abortion legal during the first four months of pregnancy.

College officials are trumpeting their new core mission of protecting female students from male student sexual aggressors. But academe is strangely silent in the face of professors or administrators themselves allegedly crossing the line by leering, making lewd comments, groping students or worse.
Buried within an influential campus sexual assault survey last year by the Association of American Universities is evidence of hundreds of incidents of inappropriate and potentially criminal behavior by faculty and staff against female students.
“The information buried in the report raises more questions than it answers and requires further investigation and explanation,” said Subodh Chandra, a Cleveland, Ohio, attorney who represents college plaintiffs in sexual misconduct lawsuits.

SAN FRANCISCO — Silicon Valley venture capitalist Keith Rabois, onstage in January at a tech conference, said his first choice for president was a Democrat, Pete Buttigieg. The prevailing wisdom of the past few months is that this hot mess of a Democratic primary would finally start to clear up a lot after Super Tuesday. With Bernie Sanders stealing almost all of the thunder for weeks as votes finally began to be cast, it looks like the higher-ups in the party decided to get some contingency plans rolling a bit early.
Hot on the heels of Mayor Pete exiting the race, Amy Klobuchar bailed as well, and immediately threw her endorsement to der Bidengaffer.
Both candidates saw the writing on the wall after Biden’s overwhelmingly decisive victory in South Carolina last Saturday.

From the Jerusalem Post:
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu succeeded in winning 60 seats for his bloc of right-wing and religious parties in Monday’s election, one less than he needed for a majority in the Knesset, according to exit polls on the three television networks.
The exit polls indicated that Netanyahu’s Likud won 36-37 seats. Its allies in Shas, UTJ and Yamina won 9, 7-8 and 6-7 respectively.

DENVER — Trying to remove the gray wolf from the endangered species list has been like prying a pack of the predators off a fat elk carcass: messy, more than a little risky and with no guarantee of success.
With gray wolves thriving since their 1995 reintroduction, a dogfight is looming as the Fish and Wildlife Service and House lawmakers ramp up their efforts to delist the animals, setting up another battle over the Endangered Species Act with environmentalists.
Reps. Collin C. Peterson, Minnesota Democrat, and Rob Bishop, Utah Republican, jumped back into the fray last week with legislation to end the gray wolf’s endangered species status in the Lower 48.

If the measure of a successful election were only how quickly the results are released, then California would be a disaster. But that’s not how election officials in the state see it as they prepare for the primary election on Tuesday, or Super Tuesday, when California and 13 other states vote. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear another constitutional challenge to Obamacare. The court’s latest rendezvous with the “Affordable Care Act” became all but inevitable in late 2018 when U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor ruled, in Texas v. United States, that the individual mandate was unconstitutional and inseverable from the rest of the statute. The latter defect, he held, required him to strike down the entire law. The case inevitably landed in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, which upheld O’Connor’s ruling on the mandate, but remanded the severability question back to him for further “analysis.” This satisfied neither the Republicans who filed the original lawsuit nor Obamacare’s Democratic defenders.

Despite a deluge of debate-night gaffes and sagging poll numbers, Joe Biden is poised to take on Bernie Sanders virtually head to head on Super Tuesday — thanks in large part to a Democratic Party establishment that fears having the socialist Sanders atop its 2020 ticket, insiders said Monday.
Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Amy Klobuchar suspended their campaigns on Sunday and Monday, respectively, and said they would endorse fellow moderate Biden, in a last-ditch effort to stop the Vermont senator, who appeared to be steam-rolling toward big wins in delegate-rich states like California and Texas.

A couple of weeks ago, when I wrote about the upcoming Cesar Awards in Paris, I noted with dismay that the academy running the “French Oscars” had rewarded notorious, fugitive child rapist and pedophile Roman Polanski with a dozen nominations for his most recent film. This led to some admirable pushback from members of the European film community, particularly among women. Chief among those was Adèle Haenel, a woman who has found success in the film industry there as an actress but who has been quite vocal about the fact that she, as a child actress, had been raped by a different director when she was barely past puberty.

Good luck deposing former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. She’s as slippery as an eel and twice as devious. She’ll figure out a way to circumvent the truth. It’s her greatest skill set.
Clinton and her lawyers have spent months inventing one excuse after another for why she shouldn’t have to answer questions in a deposition about her unauthorized and unsecured computer system. She used a clandestine server to handle all of her electronic communications as secretary of state, including the transfer and dissemination of thousands of classified and top-secret documents.
There is no doubt that Clinton’s unprotected email apparatus jeopardized America’s national security.

Wall Street surged on Monday as investors hunted for bargains following reassurances by central banks that they stood ready to counter the economic impact from the coronavirus following last week’s steep sell-off. As concerns man-made climate change:
"The temperature of the Earth" is an ambiguous term that cannot mean anything. At any given time it is possible to measure the temperature of some very small part of the Earth, such as, perhaps, a shot glass of water. At that same moment, other temperatures of the Earth that could be measured will show a variation from the temperature of molten rock (1,300 to 2,200°F) to polar ice (32 to -76°F). Daily variation of the same place on Earth can be 50 to 60°F. Seasonal variation can be well over 100°F in high latitudes.

However, once Birch’s friend Genie Wachter heard what happened, she decided to travel from her home in Illinois to Pennsylvania and transport her friend’s ashes to Dandridge, where she was born.

Sen. Tom Cotton is headed to New Hampshire, the nation's first primary state, to cultivate support for a potential 2024 president bid, planning to campaign for a Republican Senate candidate and raise money for the party.
Cotton in May will headline a major fundraising dinner for the Hillsborough County Republican Committee that typically draws rising GOP stars and White House hopefuls. On the same trip, the Arkansas Republican will deliver a keynote speech to the New Hampshire GOP convention. This month, the Cotton campaign will air a television advertisement in New Hampshire, narrated by the senator, promoting GOP 2020 Senate contender Don Bolduc.

Joe Biden said he would like former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg to be part of his administration should he win the presidency.
Speaking to a reporter in Texas on Monday, the former vice president praised both Buttigieg and Sen. Amy Klobuchar after their exits from the race. Buttigieg dropped out on Sunday, and Klobuchar followed suit Monday, the eve of Super Tuesday, which is the biggest night of the Democratic primary contest. Both are expected to endorse Biden in an effort to deny Bernie Sanders the nomination.
“I did speak to Pete Buttigieg a couple days ago to encourage him to stay engaged because he has enormous talent,

Former Bill Clinton strategist Paul Begala thinks President Trump is going to swap running mates in 2020.
The CNN political analyst made the prediction during a Monday panel event at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s annual conference. Begala, who was a chief strategist during Clinton’s 1992 campaign, said he thinks Pence will be replaced as vice president on Trump's ticket with Nikki Haley, his former U.N. ambassador.
“This is not a prediction. It’s a certainty,” Begala said. “On Thursday, July 16 — that’s the date the Democrat gives her or his acceptance address — on that day, to interrupt that narrative, Donald Trump will call a press conference at Mar-a-Lago."

In a surprise moment at the end of his Dallas rally on the eve of Super Tuesday, former Vice President Joe Biden called former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke up to the stage -- and vowed to put O'Rourke, who has said the government should forcibly seize assault rifles from Americans, in charge of gun-control efforts. Also at the rally, Biden accepted the endorsements of onetime rivals Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar, as the Democratic party's moderate wing rallied behind Biden to challenge anti-establishment frontrunner and self-described "democratic socialist" Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. "Ladies and gentlemen, tomorrow, March 3, 2020, I will be casting my ballot for Joe Biden,"

As if Bernie Sanders's extremist positions alone weren't enough to give one pause, a look at how he intends to enact them is even more disturbing.
According to the Washington Examiner:
LOS ANGELES, California — Addressing a crowd of thousands, Sen. Bernie Sanders gave a glimpse of what his first days as president would look like.
The Vermont senator pledged executive orders effectively legalizing marijuana in all fifty states as well as expunging the records of many of those who have been arrested for possession of the substance.
"We are going to end the destructive war on drugs.

With the rise of coronavirus, the Democrats are so desperate to destroy Trump that they’re lying about everything possible, celebrating damage to the American economy, and working hard to drive ordinary Americans into a blind panic. This is an unusually sordid display of partisanship over country, although none of them have the grace to be ashamed. A look at Obama’s presidency reveals that the Democrats’ standards were quite different back then.
To set the stage, here are a few indisputable facts:
On January 31, 2020, as China confirmed that 259 people had died and there were about 100 cases reported outside of China,

For those who think Bernie Sanders is a well-meaning, if misguided, old man, he's not. First, anyone who can still promote hardcore socialism (AKA communism) despite the 100,000,000 dead bodies it left behind in the 20th century is not well-meaning; he's flat-out evil. The fact that Bernie honestly believes in the system (even as he survives the cognitive dissonance living life as a millionaire) is no excuse.
Second, the people and organizations Bernie has gathered around him point to a dark new age in America, one of race-hatred, anti-Semitism, and the breakdown of all law and order. This post focuses on that last point,
