While it's tempting to think of every epidemic as a unique event, a disruption of 'normal' life which will eventually return to the old routine, professionals know that it part of an endless struggle between humanity and disease, a struggle that has lasted -- and will last -- for as long as the species exists. "Every outbreak provides an opportunity to gain important information, some of which is associated with a limited window of opportunity ... Critical to moving the field forward, even in the context of an outbreak, is ensuring that investigational products are evaluated in scientifically and ethically sound studies."

Thanks! Risk assessment is not something an entrenched government bureaucracy is good at.

One of the scientific projects I managed involved defense against bioweapons, detection and such. I learned a great deal from the brilliant biosciences professionals that I worked with to put together the project in two former soviet states, with an American company pulling it together. It is much like Wretchard says, an eternal fight against biology, always trying to destroy us, and us trying to prevent it from destroying us. And each new challenge teaches us more, we invent and discover new things, step by step moving forward.

Chris Matthews, one of the longest-tenured voices at MSNBC, announced his retirement during Monday’s night’s airing of his talk show, “Hardball.” Matthews, 74, said he and MSNBC had mutually agreed to part ways. The decision followed a series of events that resulted in criticism of the host’s statements about Bernie Sanders, African-American lawmakers, and comments he had made to female journalists and coworkers. “I’m retiring,” Matthews said. “This is the last ‘Hardball’ on MSNBC.” Matthews was due to retire in the near future with the events of the past week playing a factor in the timing of the move, an MSNBC spokesperson said.
Bernie Sanders Boards the Wrong Private

Bernie Sanders is on the go all the time -- which seems to have given him a momentary case of a campaign brain fart as he accidentally boarded the wrong jet. The Democratic front-runner was spotted Saturday making his way off of a private Gulfstream between campaign stops in South Carolina and Massachusetts -- the latter being where he held a rally at Boston Common ahead of Super Tuesday. Fact is ... the S.C. primary looks like it's gonna go to Joe Biden, as he's well ahead of everyone else in the latest polls. Looks like Bernie's cutting his losses and moving on. As for this little mix-up here, it's kinda funny.
The US should tackle coronavirus

China’s stock market is the world’s best performer, thanks in part to massive fiscal stimulus in response to last year’s trade war and this year’s virus epidemic. That’s what governments are supposed to do in response to natural disasters, and the rest of the world should do the same thing. (Snip) With major US equity indices down more than 10% from last week’s record highs, equity markets in the West are sending an economic danger signal. Equity market sectors most exposed to the consequences of the epidemic are the worst performers. Energy and basic industries lead the declines, with 20% declines in airlines, hospitality, oil and gas, and basic materials.

The coronavirus crisis is testing political systems all over the world. In China it is challenging Xi Jin Ping because he 'owns' the system, Melinda Liu writes in Foreign Policy. "The party has something to do with everything in China, especially under Xi Jinping—and suddenly, for Xi, that has become a double-edged sword. As president, party head, and top military commander, Xi has consolidated his authority, centralized decision-making, abolished presidential term limits, and promoted his loyalists. People expect Xi, China’s 'chairman of everything,' to fix everything when it goes wrong." And there's a lot wrong. The virus is devouring the entire Chinese medical system.

New cases of coronavirus in China were running at 5,000 a day only a couple of weeks ago. The count of new cases is down to less than 100 a day, if you believe China's numbers. I don't, but the World Health Organization's declaration yesterday that the epidemic had peaked in China probably is accurate. Just look at the world's stock markets. China's equity indices barely fluttered during the past couple of days while the US and Europe lost 3%-4%. The threat of an epidemic in Italy appears to have pushed markets over the edge. Here's a chart published this morning by the research department at JP Morgan:

Convicted former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich went on Fox News in his first post-release interview and held very little back about Barack Obama's involvement in the scandal that put him in prison, while the first black president was never held accountable. Appearing on "Watters' World" with Jesse Watters, Blagojevich was quickly asked about the 2008 Senate-seat-for-sale scandal, in which Blagojevich had negotiated appointing an Obama-approved candidate, in exchange for a cabinet position. “Did you ever talk to Barack Obama about this Senate seat? Did he have any knowledge about what was going on or not?” Watters asked. “President Obama began the whole conversation

Joe Walsh, the one-term Tea Party congressman swept into office by the 2010 conservative wave, has taken his NeverTrumpism to comic new lows with his Conserving Conservatism™ endorsement of Bernie Sanders on Twitter this weekend. [Tweet] Today he's gone and done it again, with a new op-ed for the Washington Post making plain that he'll vote for Sanders if Sanders is the nominee. In researching this column, I had to spend some time perusing Walsh's Twitter timeline which has the all-too-ironic handle "WalshFreedom." That Twitter handle might be the only thing he has left after losing his guns, his health coverage, and his 401k under a Sanders administration.

Canada is presently in the throes of social and political disintegration. A left-leaning electorate has once again empowered a socialist government promoting all the lunatic ideological shibboleths of the day: global warming or “climate change,” radical feminism, indigenous sovereignty, expansionary government, environmental strangulation of energy production, and the presumed efficiency of totalitarian legislation. Industry and manufacturing are abandoning the country in droves and heading south. Canada is now reaping the whirlwind. The Red-Green Axis consisting of social justice warriors, hereditary band chiefs, renewable energy cronies, cultural Marxists, and their political and media enablers have effectively shut down the

CLEARWATER — The three men who held up a CVS Pharmacy on New Year’s Day planned their moves meticulously. The robbers hit at 5 a.m. They wore blue surgical gloves so they wouldn’t leave prints. They waved guns at employees and bound several of them with zip ties. Detectives would later review store surveillance video that showed one of the suspects casing the place the day before. And they made off with a boatload of drugs in white garbage bags — more than 10,000 pills that contained the opioids hydrocodone and oxycodone, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office. It had an estimated street value of about $320,000.

The CNN political analyst made the prediction during a Monday panel event at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s annual conference. Begala, who was a chief strategist during Clinton’s 1992 campaign, said he thinks Pence will be replaced as vice president on Trump's ticket with Nikki Haley, his former U.N. ambassador. “This is not a prediction. It’s a certainty,” Begala said. “On Thursday, July 16 — that’s the date the Democrat gives her or his acceptance address — on that day, to interrupt that narrative, Donald Trump will call a press conference at Mar-a-Lago."
