President Donald Trump made a stark appeal to black Americans during the 2016 election when he asked, “What have you got to lose?” Three years later, black Americans have rendered their verdict on his presidency with a deeply pessimistic assessment of their place in the United States under a leader seen by an overwhelming majority as racist. The findings come from a Washington Post-Ipsos poll of African Americans nationwide, which reveals fears about whether their children will have a fair shot to succeed and a belief that white Americans don’t fully appreciate the discrimination that black people experience.

If the Trump era has taught us anything, it's that large numbers of white people in the United States are motivated at least in part by racism in the voting booth. Donald Trump ran an openly racist campaign for president, calling Mexicans rapists and criminals, regularly retweeting white supremacists and at least initially balking at repudiating former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. Trump made it clear in his campaign that "Make America Great Again" meant that America was greater when white people's power was more sweeping and more secure. White voters approved of that message by a whopping 58 percent to 37 percent.

Can a woman get elected president? Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren’s possible disagreement was a cause célèbre at the most recent (and boring) debate among six Democrats vying for their party’s nomination. Is their question the same as “Can a woman be president?” The question presumably asks if a woman can be a successful president. The two questions are related: if enough people think a woman cannot be a successful president, then that woman won’t be elected president. What qualities are necessary to be a good president? People will disagree, but there is no doubt that women have been outstanding heads of state:

One hates to think that the reason Nancy Pelosi delayed delivery of the Articles of Impeachment to the Senate for trial was that her order for commemorative pens hadn’t come in yet. What’s a somber occasion like an impeachment without a commemorative pen? Don’t forget to pose for pictures with a smiling Pelosi on the way to the after party,

New York - United States officials believe Saudi Arabia’s government “almost certainly” helps its citizens escape justice by fleeing the country once they are accused of serious offenses, The Oregonian newspaper reported Friday. It said it obtained a newly declassified document from the FBI that said Riyadh’s assistance to suspects was “undermining the US judicial process.” (Snip) The newspaper described an FBI intelligence bulletin in August that was released Friday, that said the U.S. must take action to stop Riyadh from helping Saudi wrongdoers escape overseas. The heavily-redacted document said Riyadh helps citizens escape to avoid embarrassment,

In 2009, the year Joe Biden took office as vice president, a local business executive met the politician’s younger brother, Frank, at a Starbucks in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and later asked him to become the president and front man for a fledgling charter school venture. Frank Biden, a longtime real estate developer in the state, accepted the offer, and over the years, he touted his famous last name and prominent connections in Washington to help land the company a series of charter contracts from local officials in Florida to open charter schools, earning hundreds of thousands of dollars over a five-year period from the company in the process.

Investors at a major bank that Sen. Elizabeth Warren once criticized are worried about how sweeping economic changes that she’s vowed to implement if she becomes president could affect their bottom line. Mother Jones reported on Friday that the research arm of Barclays, a powerful London-based bank and financial services firm, circulated five reports late last year for paying clients, including hedge funds, commercial banks and insurance companies, about what the tumultuous Democratic primary could mean for the markets. “Given Senator Elizabeth Warren’s (D-MA) policies that she asserts are ‘big structural’ change and ‘economic patriotism,’

In a curious report on Thursday evening, the New York Times carefully averts its eyes from everything that’s interesting. Even Adam Schiff has acknowledged that James Comey’s actions in 2016 may represent the most important and significant Russian influence on the election. (Hoist your shot glass. This will be the umpteenth time I’ve quoted Mr. Schiff on this matter in this column.) Surely one of the most consequential pieces of intelligence ever received by U.S. agencies was, as we now learn, received in early 2016 from a Dutch counterpart. This is the dubious Russian intelligence that set off Mr. Comey’s multiple interventions

Earlier in the day, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, while leading Friday prayers in Tehran for the first time since 2012, noted that the assassination of top IRGC General Qasem Soleimani revealed the "terrorist nature" of the US, and also observed that Trump is a "clown". US President Donald Trump responded in a series of tweets to Khamenei's speech, claiming that the Iranian economy "is crashing, and their people are suffering", while urging the top leader to "be very careful with his words!". The US president described the Iranian Supreme Leader as "not so Supreme", characterizing the sections of Khamenei's Friday speech

Washington - US health officials will start screening air travelers at three US airports for symptoms of a new Chinese virus outbreak that's been linked to at least two deaths. Since late December, China has reported 45 cases of the new "coronavirus." The virus has been connected to a seafood market in Wuhan, a city of 11 million, apparently spreading from animals to people and causing pneumonia-like symptoms. (Snip) Screening for symptoms will start tonight at the airports receiving the vast majority of US flights from Wuhan: New York's JFK airport, followed by San Francisco's SFO airport and Los Angeles' LAX.
