WASHINGTON – Author and liberal commentator Van Jones had "high expectations" for the seventh Democratic debate, but he said what he saw on the stage in Des Moines, Iowa, was "dispiriting" because none of the candidates appeared capable of defeating President Donald Trump. "Democrats have to do better than what we saw tonight. There was nothing I saw tonight that would be able to take Donald Trump out. And I want to see a Democrat in the White House as soon as possible," Jones said in a post-debate analysis on CNN Tuesday. The former adviser to President Barack Obama said that

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) declared herself “sad” as she used more than a dozen commemorative pens to sign the two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump on Wednesday evening. The occasion was “so sad, so tragic for our country,” Pelosi told reporters, noting the “difficult time in our country’s history.” She then approached a table that had been prepared with the documents, and two dishes full of pens for her to use — about half a dozen pens in each. Pelosi then sat and signed the articles, one for “abuse of power” and one for “obstruction of Congress.” She applied each pen,

If they are truly impartial, they will want a fair trial. Fair to the president and the American people. They will want witnesses and want to see the documents. A live mortar round was found in a vehicle at a gate to the sprawling Pearl Harbor military base, shutting down the base for hours and leading three people to be taken into custody, military officials said Wednesday. It’s not clear what the trio planned to do or where they wanted to go when they were stopped late Tuesday, base spokesman Charles Anthony said, calling the mortar round “an explosive device” and “a deadly weapon.” A mortar is a portable weapon that is loaded and fired by dropping an exploding shell into a tube. Anthony said no firing device was in the car.

One day later, on Tuesday, the state appellate court stepped in to stop the Elections Commission from cleaning out the cemetery vote: The removal of as many as 209,000 names was put on hold a day after an Ozaukee County judge found three members of the Wisconsin Elections Commission in contempt of court for ignoring an order he gave in December 2019.

If you listen to Republicans, the impeachment of President Trump is a “bizarre strategy,” a partisan political blunder by the Democrats, doomed to fail in the Senate, and already backfiring. As evidence, the “hit job” has energized the Republican base, boosted GOP fundraising and, come November, will cause House Democrats in Trump districts to lose re-election. To think House Democrats actually believe Trump committed impeachable offenses grossly underestimates their political acumen. The Democrats regularly run circles around the Republicans. While the latter jumps pieces on a checkerboard, the Democrats are thinking three steps ahead, looking to checkmate the king.
