U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, a Democrat who represents Tucson and Southern Arizona, announced Wednesday that she is stepping away from her duties temporarily to seek treatment for alcohol dependence after suffering a serious fall last week that left her with cracked ribs and spinal fractures.
“I am finally seeking this help after struggling to do so in the past, and I am ready to admit that I, like countless other Americans, suffer from this disease,” she said in a prepared statement. “Hard work and determination — which have brought me success in life — have not been enough to win this battle.

I'm pretty sure that publishing this report is alcoholic shaming.

At least she admits she has a problem with alcoholism. That's part of the first step in recovery. She will be welcome in the meeting rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous. As always, the old-timers with many years of sobriety will slap $5 on the table and bet the newcomer won't make it. I will slap my fiver on the table too.

Go fight your demons on your own nickle. Resign and go to rehab.

It is always heartening to find out that people that have no personal control have control over many others- NOT !

I have always objected to calling any sort of a chemical addiction (alcohol, opiods, nicotine, etc) a disease. Diseases are caused by a viral or bacterial infection, and are quite different than addictions.
Addicted folks really want to avoid taking the responsibility for their addiction, want to be in the same category as someone who managed to pick up cholera from tainted water - a victim. This is further denial of their personal responsibility in these things. And I have had one family member with an alcohol problem, and that was resolved decades ago with one trip to rehab. I do understand how this can be a problem. But pushing off the responsibility isn't helpful.

Most alcoholics in Congress just go to Bethesda Naval Hospital for their semiannual drying-out cures.

Sounds like a tough road ahead for her. I doubt she is alone in her addiction to alcohol. Many others in the swamp are too. And it's not just alcohol.

As a recovering alcoholic, 27 yrs, the one thing I know about alcoholism is you need to make some huge changes in your life. You may need to stay away from some of your friends, drop out of some organizations and clubs and maybe even change jobs. If this woman thinks she can go back to her job in 3 wks she is lying to herself, her physical wounds won't even be healed let alone her emotional wounds. This woman's constituents deserve a full time representative and she will not be able to provide that to to them. I wish her the best of luck but she needs to resign from her job and get away from politics.

Pelosi is a drunk and has mild to moderate dementia as well as a touch of Parkinson's disease and can't put together a sentence without her teeth falling out. Give Nervous Nancy 3 guesses and she couldn't tell you today is Thursday.

I am appalled at these comments! For the first time ever I am ashamed to be a Lucianne daily reader. I'm a conservative and a Recovered Alcoholic who hasn't had a drink in 12 years. But I fought my addiction for decades. After each drunk telling myself I would never drink again...walking into a bar and telling myself I will just sit here and not drink! If you have never suffered a malady or a weakness, throw the first stone! I wish her nothing but complete Recovery! Stop with cruelty in the name of politics! That is what Democrats do!

i do not now and will never believe Alcoholism is a disease. Cancer is a disease, MS is a disease but alcoholism is caused by lifting that glass or bottle to your mouth yourself. Control yourself. No one else can do it for you.

I'm thinking she should throw in with Nancy and Hillary and get a group rate.
She seems to have admitted her problem because her accident outed her. Not sure that bodes well for her recovery opposed to someone who opens up when they don't feel they have to.

She has a long road ahead of her if she is serious about quitting drink and the stress of a full time job in Congress plus a reelection campaign needs to be considered as a bad thing for her and for her constituents. It is enough time for her to step down gracefully and make room for a new candidate in Nov.
If her fellow Arizonan McCain was an example, she will remain. National office is addictive too.

I have 22 years of sobriety, after many failed attempts at quitting. I found that AA just didn't do it for me, although many recovered with their help. I found that calling it a disease, and blaming the "disease", was just another copout. It wasn't until I understood that the real problem was me, and asking God for strength, that I was able to stop. I wish her well.

#'s 6 and 17 are correct: If alcoholism were a disease, it would be the only one where the patient took NOTHING to be cured.
The disease concept is a product of treatment centers where the primary objective is to earn money (recovery be damned).

I never bought the “alcoholism is a disease” line and still don’t. One of my brothers is a friend of Bill W. after years of hitting the bottle. Thecfirst thing he’ll tell you anout it is “it’s not a disease - I made a choice.”
At her age, Kirkpatrick has probably been a drunk for a loooong time.

While you're at it Ann you might want to seek treatment for TDS (Trump Derangement Syndrome)!

I come from a family of alcoholics - my mother was one of 5 children, and she was the only one of the five who wasn't a drunk. She did not drink at all.
I did my share of drinking, and I was pretty good at it. But at the age of 34, or so, I realized that if I wanted to finish my Ph.D., I had to stop wasting time and money on the broth of the devil. So I quit, and never had another drink.
I wish the congresswoman well. It is no fun to be a falling down drunk. Give up the booze, or wind up like Dollar Bill Clinton'a wife. She also should give up her seat in congress. Too much stress.

I find it nearly impossible to wish a democrat well. Can't do it. I only hope she doesn't drive and kill someone and I hope she stays out of barroom fights. Other than that .......nope can't wish her well.

The only way I know to Recover from substance abuse is a hard and prolonged diet of the 12 Steps and The Big Book. I found this at The Retreat in Wayzata, MN. It’s around 5,000 dollars for a 30 day stay and is total immersion in the 12 Steps! This compares to around 50,000 for treatment centers but The Retreat has no Doctors on staff. They do talk about God, however...which is a constant theme in the Book! Disease? No excuses like that are used in the Book!

The left wing news has acknowledged this. Of course no one has put "democrat" in the headline or gone after her like they would a conservative.
