New York’s financially struggling Metropolitan Opera has slapped a trigger warning on Puccini’s Turandot, warning audiences that the much-performed masterpiece that is set in feudal China is “rife” with “racial stereotypes.”
It also accuses Puccini of cultural appropriation, claiming the Italian composer borrowed and distorted Chinese music.
The lengthy trigger warning, which is contained in program notes that can be viewed online, calls Puccini’s classic opera “problematic.” The production currently running at the Met is the late Franco Zeffirelli’s opulent staging that the company has kept in rotation for decades. [Video]
The New York Post was the first to report on the trigger warning.

While I generally ignore some warning labels like those on liquor bottles, I wonder why they hate what they are doing so much as to warn potential customers to stay away. I guess they'll only be happy when they file for bankruptcy.

Hold on there, Met.
You accuse Puccini of cultural appropriation while your stage is filled with whites and blacks and hispanics slathered in make-up and wigs to make them look Chinese???
This is my favorite opera and I've seen two of their productions streamed in the movie theater of Zeffirelli’s magic. I'll have to take a pass on this one because I now learn it may trigger me.

Liberals just have to take out the enjoyment of our classics for everybody. Remember the female doofus who complained that Michelangelo‘s work on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel had “too many white people?”

Turandot is set in ancient China. The people love the Emperor and fear his daughter Principessa Turandot who likes to sentence suitors to be beheaded. Things have changed. It's a fairy tale. It isn't necessary to point out in Strauss' opera Die Frau ohne Schatten that it isn't possible for a woman to lose her shadow. The Valkyries can't fly through the air. We ain't that stupid. Focus on important stuff such as why do the tickets cost so much.

FMO. These people are so stupid. First of all, Zeffirelli's production is a cash cow for the company; people who have never been to an opera go to see that production. It is always SRO. Second opera is a transcendent art form. It is an attempt to set a stage production in motion that will make the audience hear, feel, think, become one with, be transfigured by, etc. These things are all anathema to the Woke movement. To denigrate opera, the Woke call it "privileged." If they mean only the wealthy can afford tickets, take a look at the prices of a Beyoncè or Taylor sSwift concert. Liberals destroy everything they touch. Let the Woke Met continue their horrible, contemporary woke pieces -- see where that gets them. I'll listen to my digital downloads of Nillson, Sutherland, Inge Bork and Montserrat Caballé (her SFO live recording is incredible, a role everyone said she couldn't do.) FMO.

I am pretty sure that The Met PC police could find something triggering or not PC in every opera written by the old masters. Maybe they should just stop performing them to satisfy the sensitive nature of their enlightened patrons. Only perform new, socially acceptable operas written by a diverse group of new compsers. This must include minorities, women, and members of the LGBTQ community. Of course, if The Met is really worried about revenue, they could always put on some drag shows.

Hahaha. Just wait til we take on music in general, specifically lyrics. Think about all of those rock and roll songs about young (heterosexual) love! How could we have been so intolerable? Maybe we should ban the #1 song She Loves You (and the Beatles) forever---"Pride can hurt you, too?" Oh no! We sang that? How insensitive were we! Gasp.
You know it's up to you
I think it's only fair
Pride can hurt you, too
Apologize to her
