What DeSantis Won’t Admit

The Monday headline on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in the New York Times said, unintentionally, exactly what is wrong with the GOP Establishment’s response to former President Donald Trump. The headline: DeSantis Bluntly Acknowledges Trump’s 2020 Defeat: ‘Of Course He Lost’ The Times reports this: Mr. DeSantis, who is polling well behind Mr. Trump for the Republican presidential nomination, had acknowledged on Friday that the former president’s false theories about a rigged 2020 election were “unsubstantiated.” Say what? Allegations that the 2020 election were rigged are “unsubstantiated.” Really?

Comments:

I like DeSantis. He is articulate, smart, accomplished. But...I defended him when the initial report came out about his comments on 2020. Now that I've looked at the whole business with some distance, I was wrong to excuse him. In this piece, Lord shares his astonishment at DeSantis's monumental misstep regarding 2020. How in the name of all that's holy could a guy this sharp be so stupid? All he had to do was say something like, "There were many irregularities about that election that should give everyone pause." Dumb.

DeSantis has to say a lot of things in order to kiss up to the media. Problem for him is it hurts his polling numbers.

DeSantis knows as well as anyone that the 2020 election was rigged. But he also knows that to say so openly would cause him to lose potential support among the establishment GOP, moderate Republicans and independents who - guess what - are electorally critical to the success of any Republican candidate (including Trump). Governor Ron is a smart politician and, in terms of policy, a straight ahead conservative and I support him. Trump's ascension seems to have happened yesterday, but the truth is times have changed. DeSantis is our future, IF we have one.

Is desantis also in the camp that the russia hoax never happened, the Ukraine phone call never happened, Trump should have done what he was told on the presidential records even if the people telling him were wrong, jan 6 was an insurrection to overthrow the US government, and we should all just get over everything that was and is being done and hope the dims don’t dislike our next candidate so much that they expel him/her too and maybe they’ll let us win sometimes? Or do we say, no what dims did was wrong and we’re not moving on until your rico enterprise collapses.

I respect the views of #5 and #6, long-time posters, who have looked at this matter from a purely practical standpoint. I haven't given up on DeSantis. OK, he said something he's too smart to believe to keep himself in the game. I understand that. however misguided a move it was. Maybe he was tired and didn't choose his words carefully. He gets the benefit of the doubt from me on this one. #5 is right--there is more to this than we know. Somebody of consequence--DeSantis--must remain as a viable alternative.

But the Trump populists who the establishment despises and ignores, well they will understand. Right? Hiding in the tall grass with the establishment doesn’t make him establishment, right? Your beloved Romney was also a severe conservative. And will be begging to be Ron’s Secretary of State so the Uniparty Ukrainian grifters can continue to make money through Burisma. Of course, Ron DeSantis can come back and win. Anybody in the race can win – we saw Trump come back in 2016 when most everyone wrote him off in the general. Now it’s the Florida governor’s turn to be written off, but he’s not exactly in the same place that Trump was. DeSantis is a strong second right now. For him, it’s not a matter of a miracle happening, threading a bunch of needles to win the general when rational betters would bet against you like in 2016. No, Ron DeSantis has a plan, and there’s a method to his muddling through.

I floated an idea about the relative value of having Ron DeSantis in the GOP presidential race in a Facebook post a little over a week ago, and for whatever reason it was one of the few things I’ve put on that platform that hasn’t been suppressed in the past several months. [Snip] Bear in mind, I’m not suggesting that you have to vote for DeSantis. I’m simply advocating for the positive properties of having DeSantis around as at least a second option in this presidential race on the Republican side. And I’m a Vivek Ramaswamy fan. I’ve loved most of what Ramaswamy has said on the campaign trail.

At a town hall in New Hampshire, Ron DeSantis was asked how he will respond when Trump starts belittling him and name-calling in personal attacks on the debate stage. His answer was a glimmer that the Ron DeSantis we’ve been waiting to show up on the campaign trail is still there. Is he finally waking up? The question now is whether or not it is too late to make a difference. DeSantis pointed out what many Republican voters think – the way Trump speaks is not presidential. [Snip] A majority of voters don’t want a Trump-Biden re-match.

Faced with a historically unpopular president overseeing a weak economy and promoting left-wing “Bidenomics,” Republicans have a golden opportunity in 2024. The election couldn’t be more winnable. And the only thing that should matter for Republicans is actually winning it. While there is a sense that Donald Trump has become a frontrunner in the Republican primaries, there is just as much of a sense that he can’t win a general election—not anymore. Here's the hard truth: If Trump secures the Republican nomination, Joe Biden will be re-elected. But, if Ron DeSantis becomes the nominee, then the Democrats have little to no chance.

The supporters of former President Trump are absolutely correct about one thing. If every single Republican pledged their allegiance to him and fell in line he’d win the nomination easily. But he’d also lose the general election, again. He does not receive enough support from outside the traditional Republican and MAGA base to win in 2024. Hillary Clinton beat Trump by roughly 3 million in the popular vote in 2016. While Trump indeed did win the election by taking the required 270 electoral votes, just a few thousand votes in each of the key swing states would have changed that outcome into a Hillary Clinton landslide victory in 2016.

When Trump burst on the political scene, his smashmouth style was, shall we say, off-putting. Dan Bongino, also from Queens, told us this was just the normal style of speech in that area. And many of us voted for the Donald, knowing that the alternative was simply intolerable. We weren’t sure what he would do, but his opponent was guaranteed to do bad things. For four years, in the face of relentless false attacks, Donald Trump got things done. Lots of things. But he didn’t drain the swamp.

The Bible holds that “Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise…” (Proverbs 17:28.) In the modern era, with attribution to Mark Twain, Abraham Lincoln, or others, that’s been reworked as “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.” Former Attorney General Bill Barr’s latest embittered statements about the documents the FBI stole from Mar-a-Lago place him squarely within that quotation. In the government, where it’s almost impossible to get fired, those who stick around long enough become respected, even revered. That’s especially true for attorneys who work in the Department of Justice.

he cancer of early voting tightened its deadly grip on the American body politic in last week’s midterm elections. This is yet another destructive outcome of Nov. 8. The mad rush toward early voting accelerated thanks to another disease: COVID-19. Like so many things wrong in America today, COVID lurks just beneath the surface. Because voting in person was “too dangerous,” opportunistic Democrat lawyers sued like ambulance chasers in 2020 to widen and deepen early voting beyond its earlier, lower profile. This year, with COVID in the rear-view mirror, 2020’s “emergency” measure has become the new normal. The Democrats’ ever-leftward ratchet mechanism always works this way.

Ten years ago, back in the halcyon days when we simpletons believed the Republicans were at least some of the time an opposition party, and that Willard Mitt Romney was a man of probity and character, I wrote the following in the pages of National Review Online about the election that was about to take place. The piece was entitled "Crush Them." Conservatives have a rare opportunity [today] to do something they signally failed to do in the landslide elections of 1972 and 1984: finish the job.

[Snip] Aides said that Biden had been planning to give a version of Thursday night’s address since this past June, relaying he wanted to speak on what he saw as increasingly grave threats to the nation’s democracy. But events continued to get in the way of its delivery. Pressure built over the past few weeks, they said, amid a number of developments.
