Faced with a historically unpopular president overseeing a weak economy and promoting left-wing “Bidenomics,” Republicans have a golden opportunity in 2024. The election couldn’t be more winnable. And the only thing that should matter for Republicans is actually winning it. While there is a sense that Donald Trump has become a frontrunner in the Republican primaries, there is just as much of a sense that he can’t win a general election—not anymore. Here's the hard truth: If Trump secures the Republican nomination, Joe Biden will be re-elected. But, if Ron DeSantis becomes the nominee, then the Democrats have little to no chance.

The supporters of former President Trump are absolutely correct about one thing. If every single Republican pledged their allegiance to him and fell in line he’d win the nomination easily. But he’d also lose the general election, again. He does not receive enough support from outside the traditional Republican and MAGA base to win in 2024.
Hillary Clinton beat Trump by roughly 3 million in the popular vote in 2016. While Trump indeed did win the election by taking the required 270 electoral votes, just a few thousand votes in each of the key swing states would have changed that outcome into a Hillary Clinton landslide victory in 2016.

When Trump burst on the political scene, his smashmouth style was, shall we say, off-putting. Dan Bongino, also from Queens, told us this was just the normal style of speech in that area. And many of us voted for the Donald, knowing that the alternative was simply intolerable. We weren’t sure what he would do, but his opponent was guaranteed to do bad things.
For four years, in the face of relentless false attacks, Donald Trump got things done. Lots of things. But he didn’t drain the swamp.

Ten years ago, back in the halcyon days when we simpletons believed the Republicans were at least some of the time an opposition party, and that Willard Mitt Romney was a man of probity and character, I wrote the following in the pages of National Review Online about the election that was about to take place. The piece was entitled "Crush Them."

By that measure, America is running a military establishment that more closely resembles an overpopulated Dickensian sweat shop than a modern war machine. Indeed, it's been so long since the United States has won a war -- back when the War Department still existed, in fact -- that hardly any living American knows what "victory" means any more. But what difference does it make? This man's army is now the province of pregnant females, transsexuals, and born-male admirals in skirts. No wonder it can't fight.
As I write, on January 6, 2022, I’m reminded that sometimes government doesn’t go right.
Too often, it has been because of oppression — governments only caring about some of the people and riding roughshod over the rest. They paper over the tyranny with the appearance of legality, deepening the oppression by requiring mental and spiritual enslavement to the this caricature as if it were legitimate.
But even well-conceived nations can err. Constitutionalists know that even the best systems of law will miscarry. Juries get it wrong, sometimes wrongly convicting innocent people, sometimes failing to convict real criminals.

The Stasi were part of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Before its collapse in 1989 after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the GDR, as Bailey describes, “went to extraordinary lengths to spy on and control its citizens.”

FIRST ON FOX: Former President Trump was indicted Tuesday on charges stemming from Special Counsel Jack Smith's investigation into the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, Fox News Digital has learned.
This is the second federal indictment the former president faces out of Smith’s investigation. Trump, who leads the 2024 GOP presidential primary field, has already pleaded not guilty to 37 counts related to his alleged improper retention of classified records from his presidency.
Those charges include willful retention of national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice and false statements. Trump was charged with an additional three counts as part of a superseding indictment out of that probe last week.

Yellow Freight, a massive, almost century-old LTL carrier, has gone out of business, and the “spin” of the business world will likely rival the spin of the political world in covering this news. [snip]Approximately 30,000 people are now unemployed, who had a job last week. That’s 30,000 experienced people - truck drivers, dock workers, mechanics, bookkeepers, sales reps, IT experts, customer service reps, and other employees in all levels of management and back-office clerical services.
They will now be competing with the millions of other jobseekers already in the marketplace. Hopefully they will find something better; they could hardly do worse.
Ron DeSantis said he will follow the primary election rules, whatever they may be – but said it's clear some state GOPs are trying to sway the results against smaller candidates.
The comment comes as Donald Trump still refuses to take the vow to support whichever candidate becomes the GOP nominee in order to participate in the debates. The former president, according to his own staff, also feels the debates are beneath him.
Trump posted to Truth Social on Monday that he would use the debate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on August 23 to consider vice presidential candidates.
Some eighty-one percent of Democrat voters are perfectly happy to keep supporting Joe Biden for reelection to the presidency.
But there's one subcategory among them that is scaring the heck out of Democrat pollsters: Black men, whose support for the old dotard has cratered.
Biden is down by thirty points among this normally loyal political group. A very significant number just don't want to vote for him.
According to the Daily Caller, citing a Washington Post report:
Black voters are significantly less enthused about a Biden reelection campaign than they were in 2020, with only 55% saying they’re likely to support him in 2024, according to an early May AP/NORC poll.

I know I'm likely to be flamed by fervid Trump supporters for posting this and for changing my mind about the best candidate in the general. No doubt some will refuse to even read what Backer has to say. But I've come to believe he's right to warn about the staggering number of people who will not vote for Trump even if it means Biden again. OK, fire away.
