Jeff Bezos’ unfinished mega yacht was towed away from a Dutch shipbuilding yard before dawn Tuesday just weeks after Rotterdam residents threatened to pelt the luxury vessel with eggs if the city went through with plans to dismantle a landmark bridge to make way for the $500 million ship. The 417-foot long, three-masted yacht, which goes by the name Y721, was relocated from the Oceanco shipyard in Alblasserdam to the Greenport yard just 24 miles away in Rotterdam, (Snip) “When I was standing on one of the bridges, they shined a searchlight on me, so it wasn’t easy for me to take pictures.”

This was the obvious, sane, sensible solution all along. What sort of a total moron builds a tall yacht upstream of a low bridge and doesn't plan to add the tall parts after taking it past the bridge.....from the beginning of the planning for construction? Far more sensible than the lunatic proposal to dismantle the bridge. And I am sure that Bezos had nothing at all to do with the planning of this mess. I'm sure he approved sketches, specifications, some nice 3D vodeo images of what it would look like and wrote the checks. But somebody in the ship building company is an idiot.

I'm no fan of Bezos, but the bridge is designed to be taken apart for this reason and has been routinely dismantled in the past. People are just angry because Bezos is a rich American who dared to get above his station.

Side story. When the Navy was building LSD's at Avondale Shipyard in Westwego LA back in the late eighties, the upper portion of the mast had to be hinged so that it could be lowered in order to clear the Huey P Long Bridge on the new ship's transit down the Mississippi to the Gulf. Once clear, the top of the mast was pivoted into position and firmly secured in place.

Re #11, in those ancient times, men in charge of planning were smart enough to check things like "how high will this ship we are building go?" and then they would check bridges downstream....and work out something IN ADVANCE. Unfortunately, those sort of men are all in the graveyards, and their replacements aren't much, clearly.

Recluse janitor Henry Darger spent more than 40 years in a tiny one-room apartment in Lincoln Park, writing, painting, sketching, collecting and fantasizing. It wasn’t until after his death in 1973 that his works, discovered by his landlords, trickled onto Chicago’s art scene, with his fanciful stories and sometimes-violent imagery eventually gaining worldwide appreciation — and skyrocketing value. By mid-1945, the United States had been at war for three-and-a-half years, enduring the draft, separation from loved ones, mounting numbers of casualties, and rationing, with no end in sight. Many Americans were weary, not unlike our feelings now, after two-and-a-half years of privations and anguish related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Craft breweries across America have been on the front lines of businesses facing higher material costs because of inflation. Now, many are confronting a shortage of a key ingredient: carbon dioxide, the gas that gives beer its crisp, effervescent taste. And one brewer has already said it plans to shut down a key manufacturing plant and lay off workers as a result. Night Shift Brewing, in Everett, Massachusetts, just outside Boston, cited the CO2 shortage as the reason it is suspending operations at its longtime facility and outsourcing to nearby locations instead. "Come October 1, we won’t likely have jobs for many of this team," the company said in a statement on Instagram.
