Recluse janitor Henry Darger spent more than 40 years in a tiny one-room apartment in Lincoln Park, writing, painting, sketching, collecting and fantasizing. It wasn’t until after his death in 1973 that his works, discovered by his landlords, trickled onto Chicago’s art scene, with his fanciful stories and sometimes-violent imagery eventually gaining worldwide appreciation — and skyrocketing value. He was a neglected and abused child growing up and did some considerable charitable works to help children in danger, despite his limited means. His fiction stories are truly odd -- think if Salvador Dali wrote fiction -- but sweeping epic novels of children in danger who battled against the forces of evil. Many of the protagonists in his stories (and the subject of his art) were children who were murdered by parents or persons unknown from around the world. Not a lot of modern art is worth a darn -- and his skill as a painter was technically limited -- but the subjects and the emotions he captured were quite powerful. You can see he loved G-d and wanted to protect children.

I went out and did a search on Henry Darger, and then selected "images" in Bing search engine. Odd to somewhat disturbing "art". Looks to me like a lot of copying of images of little girls and then colored with crayons. And some are not pleasant images. One looking like little girls crossing perhaps the River Styx to Hell? I think he must have had some sort of books of line drawings of little girls and copied them over and over again. I sure wouldn't want any of them hanging on my walls.

FTA: After Darger had behavioral problems at school, he was sent to what was then known as the Illinois Asylum for Feeble-Minded Children in downstate Lincoln. Darger would later incorporate many of his experiences at the asylum, including children being subjected to forced child labor and severe punishment, into his art. Based on his works that you can find online, I'd say this poor soul never recovered from his time in the asylum.

Jeff Bezos’ unfinished mega yacht was towed away from a Dutch shipbuilding yard before dawn Tuesday just weeks after Rotterdam residents threatened to pelt the luxury vessel with eggs if the city went through with plans to dismantle a landmark bridge to make way for the $500 million ship. The 417-foot long, three-masted yacht, which goes by the name Y721, was relocated from the Oceanco shipyard in Alblasserdam to the Greenport yard just 24 miles away in Rotterdam, (Snip) “When I was standing on one of the bridges, they shined a searchlight on me, so it wasn’t easy for me to take pictures.”

Lake In The Hills, Ill. (WLS) -- After weeks of online and in-person backlash, a northwest suburban drag show that was planned for Saturday night was abruptly canceled. French President Emmanuel Macron warned his country’s people Thursday to prepare for a total cutoff of Russian natural gas by supporting alternatives, having public lights switched off at night and engaging in a period of nationwide energy “sobriety.” The Russian invasion of Ukraine and ensuing sanctions have aggravated other factors driving up prices for energy and others goods. With no end in sight for the Ukraine war, Macron said, the French should brace themselves for costs to remain high. “This war will continue,” he said in a televised interview marking France’s national holiday, Bastille Day. “The summer, early autumn will be very hard.”

The hellfire missiles that are said to have taken out Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, but not his family, are a newer generation of missiles that are high on precision and devoid of explosives. The AGM 14 R9X missile, made by Lockheed Martin, can be fired from, in Zawahiri’s case, a Reaper drone as well as other platforms. It can be fired from 600 miles away. Because its payload is tungsten and not packed explosives, this version of the hellfire doesn’t have the accompanying explosion– unless it hits, for instance, a full gas tank in a car.
