While speaking Sunday morning with Fox News host Chris Wallace, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson was repeatedly peppered with questions that were typical of an anti-Trump administration, anti-conservative anchor. For instance, Wallace brought up the fatal police shooting of a black suspect in Atlanta. But why would he bring that up with someone who works for HUD, not the Department of Justice? Nevertheless, Wallace wondered whether the shooting was justified. “Was it appropriate to use deadly force against someone whose original offense was that he sleep asleep at the drive-through lane at a Wendy’s?” he asked. President Trump is defending his slow, careful descent from a stage ramp following his commencement address at West Point earlier Saturday.Cameras had filmed Trump gingerly walking down the lengthy ramp after his speech, sparking wild speculation online from detractors that he has health issues. A #Trumpisnotwell tag trended online.“The ramp that I descended after my West Point Commencement speech was very long & steep, had no handrail and, most importantly, was very slippery,” Trump tweeted late Saturday.“The last thing I was going to do is ‘fall’ for the Fake News to have fun with. Final ten feet I ran down to level ground. Momentum!”

We are entering the summer of our discontent. The season promises to be a long, hot struggle to maintain the integrity of our founding principles that are increasingly compromised with the best and worst of intentions. The worst intentions are those of the rabble whose objectives we shouldn’t underestimate. They will instigate and inflame chaos and anarchy to achieve what a former president promised: “to fundamentally transform America.”They will opportunistically take advantage of the nation’s weakened status from overreaction by government to COVID-19, compounded by the well-intentioned but ultimately destructive flood of trillions of dollars in “temporary” cash benefits.

The betting in Washington seems to be that the judges who ride the District of Columbia circuit of the federal appeals court are going to turn down General Michael Flynn’s petition for a writ of mandamus to end his case. The three circuit riders certainly hinted that they are not eager to tell the district judge, Emmet Sullivan, what to do, and that they have high regard for him. We share that regard, as we made clear in the editorial with which we jumped into this fray. Yet this case is about a claim that the Justice Department’s motion to dismiss the prosecution of General Flynn “reeks” of “improper political influence.”

America is in the midst of a new cultural civil war that for years has been brewing under the surface as left-wing academics breed aggressively woke children now permeating throughout the nation’s mainstream institutions. Since the killing of George Floyd at the knees of a Minneapolis police officer sparked the worst outbreak of civil unrest in decades, protests that grew out of demanding justice for Floyd morphed into a dark operation to fundamentally transform the nation’s psyche, convincing the people of their own inherent evil from ancestral wrongs. Battle lines are clearly being drawn, where the radical left has offered Americans a binary choice in a false dichotomy between total submission

Everything these days is “systemic.” But what is that “system”? I think it must be capitalism, when you get right down to it. Just think, the basic accounting terminology of capitalism is rife with implicit racism. Just think about it: when a business is losing money, we say it is “in the red.” An obvious slur at native Americans. And when a business is doing well and making profits, we say it is “in the. . .” Oh, wait. It should be “white” shouldn’t it?

Alfred Lord Tennyson was right: We are not now that strength which in old days moved earth and heaven. Sadly, we do not have the consolation of being able to claim that we are “one equal temper of heroic hearts,” either. The Marine Corps, long the most counter-cultural branch of the U.S. military, just banned even the informal use of the battle flag it used to wink at. Widespread emotional and sometimes felonious response to recent actions of a rogue police officer makes it perilous to tag preface that observation with an introductory clause like “For good or for ill…,” so revisionist history proceeds not just unchecked,

Anyone who still doubts that woke progressives can pose a material threat to the pursuit of truth should consider the case of David Shor. A week ago, as protests over the unjust police killing of George Floyd took place in major cities across the country, Shor—a 28-year-old political scientist at the Democratic consulting firm Civic Analytics—tweeted some observations about the successes and failures of various movements. He shared research by Princeton University's Omar Wasow, who has found that violent protests often backfire whereas nonviolent protests are far more likely to succeed. The impulse behind Shor's tweet was a perfectly liberal one: He feels progressive reforms

Winston Churchill noted in 1947 that “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those others that have been tried.” And what of the world’s oldest democracy, the United States of America? Still the worst country on earth — except for all of the others. Thirty-five years of hard-left campus indoctrination has now permeated the media and the leadership of our cultural institutions to create a huge intellectual constituency for contempt of America. All over the land, we’re told that we either have failed to live up to our ideals or that our ideals themselves are wicked.

New Orleans—Protesters Saturday tore down a bust of a slave owner who left part of his fortune to New Orleans' schools and then took the remains to the Mississippi River and rolled it down the banks into the water. The destruction is part of a nationwide effort to remove monuments to the Confederacy or with links to slavery as the country grapples with widespread protests against police brutality toward African Americans. Police said in a statement Saturday that demonstrators at Duncan Plaza, which is directly across the street from City Hall, dragged the bust into the streets, loaded it onto trucks
