The death of George Floyd, an African-American, at the hands of a white Minneapolis police officer has sparked weeks of urban protests—some marked by looting and violence—across the United States. It has also brought fierce condemnations of President Donald Trump. New York City mayor Bill de Blasio partly blamed the president for the unrest, noting “there’s been an uptick in tension and hatred and division since he came along,” while Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot said that she had a message for the president: “It’s two words. It begins with F and it ends with U.”

Our cities have been committing ritual suicide for decades, and "Big City Democrats" have been and always will be the Doctor Kevorkian's assisting in the process.
It's going o get much worse now, as impossible as that seems.

Big city Democrats are exactly the LAST people you need to reform the police.

They don't reform the police because they need the issues to push their agendas. They designed or approved the programs and techneques the police in their cities, use. Until they are gone, things won't change.

I disagree #2. The local officials are responsible for overseeing, the training, and leadership of their police departments. If the voters elect Democrats to run their city, then they should be responsible for the actions of the police. If there are changes needed, it's the responsibility of local officials, not the national government.
Do you really want to nationalize the police force? It's the first thing a dictator does when he seizes power. We don't want to make this a police state!

Before you leftists reform your police, why not try reforming your inner city black community and it’s thug culture instead. If you could manage to pull that off, all of your supposed police problems would disappear.

FTA: "America had just elected its first black president, which might have signaled that the country’s racist past was firmly behind it—certainly in the sense of systemic or institutional racism."
This theory has it all backwards. The election of a black president, one of such liberal bent and from Chicago, was a signal for the race baiters and pimps to "Go for it!". Chicago ought to be spelled "C-O-R-R-U-P-T-I-O-N, and everyone knows that. Once a city flips to minority-majority, or elects a minority mayor/council, it's circle-the-toilet time. Has any such city added population? Why not? Taxes, crime and poor schools are generally referenced.
And it's not "white flight". The black professional and upper middle classes are in the suburbs and have been for years. They pay their homage, and are glad to be away from those city taxes, crime and poor schools.

I can't wait until Lori Lightbrain pleads with the President for more money to help her out of the Mess called Chicago! I'm betting he will remember those Two Words and will respond in kind! He has a long memory!

Why Can’t Big-City Democrats Reform the Police?
I think the question should be :Why WON'T Big-City Democrats Reform the Police?
In 1965, the Democrats under Lyin' Lyndon ("I'll have those [enwords] voting Democrat for the next Two Hundred Years") Johnson switched tactics in oppressing black Americans. Instead of fire hoses and the KKK, they instituted the Federal so-called 'Great Society' welfare programs, which gave cash payments to single mothers, but nothing if there was a man living in the house. This resulted in the destruction of mostly black families on an Industrial scale, and as a broken family is the strongest indicator of poverty, pushed and held many blacks into poverty ever since. Young black males growing up with no Father's firm hand to guide them day-in and day-out, devolved into lawlessness, gangs and utter lack of morals. Being lawless, they treat the police as the Enemy, and the police respond by considering and acting that they are in Enemy Territory when in certain mostly black neighborhoods. This has devolved into today's Urban Thug Culture: Thug attitude being predominant, vicious 'Rap' so-called 'music' filled with 'enword' lyrics, females referred to as 'Bitches' and 'Hoes', glorifying the very worst human characteristics; people who steal at the drop of a hat if they think they can get away with it, beat-down homes, vacant and boarded up commercial and industrial buildings, trash everywhere, no maintenance or repairs being done, grown men loafing around during the workday looking to bum cigarettes, booze or drugs, abandoned and stripped carcasses of automobiles..... you know it when you see it.
So who or what is driving this, other than deliberately misguided Federal programs?
Booker T. Washington, a black man born a slave who elevated himself to being the co-founder of the Tuskeegee Institute, said it this way, which accurately describes individuals such as Jesse 'Shakedown' Jackson, Al 'Tawana Brawnley' Sharpton, 'Mad Maxine' Waters, and a host of others, most recently the entire 'Black Lives Matter' crowd:
"There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs - partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs."
It's not the Police who need reform. What needs reform is Urban Thug Culture.
