On Friday evening, Chief Justice John Roberts announced that should a tie arise during the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, he would not step in to break it.Given the near-even split of the Senate along party lines, Roberts’ comments put an end to the extensive speculation that had been bubbling around Washington.Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer prompted Chief Justice Roberts by asking the Justice if he was aware of two instances in which Chief Justice Salmon Chase made tie-breaking votes in the impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson in 1868. Johnson’s impeachment was the first in our nation’s history, resulting from frequent clashes between the Republican-controlled Congress

Democratic insiders are warning that party voters could cast their 2020 vote for President Donald Trump if Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders wins the Democratic nomination. They believe that 'the vast majority of Democrats' just 'do not believe in socialism' and would not cast a vote, would vote third party, or even vote for Trump if self-proclaimed socialist Sanders was the Democratic option. Sanders has led recent polls in Iowa ahead of Monday's caucus and has also shown a strong lead in New Hampshire. Former Vice President Joe Biden maintains his national lead.

I do wish we would take them a smidgen less seriously when they turn out to be wrong — as they always do. I was slightly surprised when Greta Thunberg announced at Davos that we had eight years left to save the planet. As long as that? Admittedly, that’s four years less than Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who put it at 12, although, come to think of it, that was last January, so presumably she now thinks we’ve got 11 years left. But some doomsayers have been much less optimistic.

The Des Moines Register, CNN and Selzer & Co. have made the decision to not release the final installment of the CNN/Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll as planned this evening.
Nothing is more important to the Register and its polling partners than the integrity of the Iowa Poll. Today, a respondent raised an issue with the way the survey was administered, which could have compromised the results of the poll. It appears a candidate’s name was omitted in at least one interview in which the respondent was asked to name their preferred candidate.
While this appears to be isolated to one surveyor, we cannot confirm that with certainty.

They are writing about the possibility of a second civil war in this country, a redo of Democrats’ nullification of federal law, the insistent opposition and rejection of the

The collapse of the Democrats' impeachment bid to Get Trump hasn't exactly been good for Democratic unity.
There were signals and indicators of the fights breaking out all over Twitter, even as Sen. Chuck Schumer made his final teary bawl to the television cameras about the whole thing being a "a grand tragedy" and a "sham trial."
Fox News host Laura Ingraham compiled a good segment of the tensions and misery -- how Adam Schiff tried for one last time to shut his fellow impeachment manager, Rep. Jerry Nadler, up at the finale, and how Schumer himself shushed Sen. Kamala Harris from trying to grab his mic

Hah-Hah! Ted Cruz turns out to have a sense of humor. Video captured the Texas Senator give a little Pelosi SOTU clap during voting today to shut down the impeachment scam. Go Ted! (Tweet/Video) Caleb Hull put together a clap comparison. Who did it better?

Supposedly in the new four-hour (yikes!) documentary Hillary the subject says of Bernie Sanders “Nobody likes him.” As with most of Hillary’s judgments, especially when it comes to gauging human desires, she is way off the mark. In fact, Sanders appears to be a reasonably likable guy, which accounts in part for his spike in the Democrat polls. There is a strong possibility he’ll end up the party’s nominee, a frightening prospect for the Democrat establishment and the country as a whole. Current polling suggests Sanders might win the Iowa primary. He’s polling just below Biden (23-21%) within the margin of error.

Late on Thursday night after the impeachment hearings had ended, the headline column at Politico was "How Trump's impeachment created two Democratic Superstars" by Jake Sherman and Heather Caygle. (snip) Not one of the House managers displayed the knowledge and skill of the President's lawyers. Watching Schiff and his cohorts be intellectually eviscerated day after day was the amusing part, as amusing as it was maddening for the wasted time. Consider the moment when Jay Sekulow reminded us all that Schiff had many times said the House had proved its case over and over again beyond all reasonable doubt, which Schiff admitted.

Across a frightened nation divided by politics and culture, a fragile harmony is ascendant, as Americans in small towns and large cities alike cry out in trembling unison: Hey, where did all these Californians come from?
Talk of a “California Exodus” is sweeping the country—and so are anxieties about its effects on the rest of the West. In October, the Boise mayoral candidate Wayne Richey proposed at an election forum to build a $26 billion wall to keep out people moving from the Golden State. (His backup plan to stop the invasion of Boise? "Trash the place.”) A viral Wall Street Journal article

Now that the Senate trial is over, I hope Democrats have plenty of water and aspirin in preparation for the raging impeachment headache they're about to endure.
Senate Republicans voted Friday not to admit any additional witnesses or evidence, the right thing to do in this ridiculous impeachment process, effectively ending our national nightmare, wherein we were expected to be absolutely outraged that President Trump asked Ukraine to investigate a matter that journalists in the United States themselves have been investigating.
All that's left to do is vote to either convict or acquit, and it looks a lot like acquittal.
I suspect that, when Democratic voters asked for impeachment,

The climax of “Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words,” arrives when the venerable justice recalls the moment he learned his nomination to the Supreme Court was confirmed. Speaking very much “in his own words,” Thomas remembers thinking, “whoop-dee-damn-doo.”
The humor is poignant because it comes after viewers journey with Thomas through his whole life, from rural poverty in the Jim Crow South to Yale, from one marriage to another, from seminary to the Supreme Court, and from hard-earned respectability to a devastating confirmation battle. After watching decades of blood, sweat, and tears culminate in a character assassination of historic proportion, “whoop-dee-damn-doo” feels about right.

DES MOINES — Hillary Clinton said on Friday in a podcast interview that Senator Bernie Sanders and his supporters did not do enough to unify the Democratic Party after the prolonged 2016 primary, calling the behavior of his supporters “distressing” and saying it affected the general election.
“All the way up until the end, a lot of people highly identified with his campaign were urging people to vote third party, urging people not to vote,” Mrs. Clinton said in an interview with Emily Tisch Sussman for her podcast “Your Primary Playlist.” “It had an impact.”

John Bolton could face legal challenges as he pushes ahead with a book describing conversations he claims to have had with President Trump while serving as his national security adviser, experts said, setting the conservative icon on a potential collision course with the administration he once served.
Bolton’s book, “The Room Where It Happened: A White House Memoir,” is still scheduled to be released in March, even after the National Security Council warned his attorney last week that it will have to be revised because it contained “significant amounts” of classified material. Bolton’s lawyer has disputed that.

With the 51 to 49 vote not to call witnesses, the Senate impeachment trial of President Trump is on track to an acquittal. And so the Trump impeachment saga is coming to an end not with a bang but a whine. “We wuz robbed!” shriek the foot-stomping Democrats as they repeat their poll-tested mantra that the trial was rigged because no witnesses were called to testify. Consequently, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has decreed that the president will remain impeached forever, and his presidency and all that flows from it will be deemed unclean and illegitimate.
Obviously, this latest failed effort to depose Trump has left the Democrats frustrated, bitterly disappointed

Here’s another black eye for the Justice Department’s Obama-era leadership: The case against Gen. Michael Flynn is in full collapse.
Federal prosecutors just backed down from their demand that Flynn — President Trump’s first, short-lived national security adviser — serve jail time for lying to FBI investigators, telling a court Wednesday that probation would be a “reasonable” sentence.
In fact, Justice had long wanted leniency, since Flynn cooperated fully with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigations. But last month it started seeking up to six months of confinement — mainly because he’s no longer taking responsibility for his crime.

After months of hype and pseudo-drama ginned up by the left, public and secret testimony and breathless “smoking-gun” headlines, it’s taking the Senate just two weeks to bring an end, finally, to the impeachment circus. And it is ending with the always-inevitable acquittal of President Trump.
What a tragic, monumental waste of time it has been. After all, anyone capable of rudimentary arithmetic could have seen this foreordained outcome coming from Day One. Indeed, it’s not entirely clear why House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and the rest of the leading luminaries of the Democratic Party even decided to embark upon this national exercise in political self-flagellation.

CNN chief legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin declared President Trump the winner of the impeachment trial after the Senate failed to pass a motion to call for additional witnesses.
In a 51-49 vote, Republicans were able to block the growing call for new testimony after a manuscript of former National Security Adviser John Bolton's forthcoming book leaked, directly tying Trump to the efforts to withhold aid from Ukraine in exchange for an investigation into the Bidens.
While Sens Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Mitt Romney, R-Utah, sided with the Democrats, swing-vote Sens Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, and Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., derailed the Democrats' efforts to bring in Bolton as a witness among others.

NEW YORK — Mary Higgins Clark, the tireless and long-reigning "Queen of Suspense" whose tales of women beating the odds made her one of the world's most popular writers, died Friday at age 92.
Her publisher, Simon & Schuster, announced that she died in Naples, Florida, of natural causes.
"Nobody ever bonded more completely with her readers than Mary did," her longtime editor Michael Korda said in statement. "She understood them as if they were members of her own family. She was always absolutely sure of what they wanted to read — and, perhaps more important, what they didn’t want to read —

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts told Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., on Friday that he would not act as a tie-breaker if the Senate becomes deadlocked with a 50-50 split during President Trump's impeachment trial. Schumer began by asking Roberts if he was aware that Chief Justice Samuel Chase cast tie-breaking votes during President Andrew Johnson's impeachment trial in the 1860s. "I have a parliamentary inquiry," Schumer said. "Is the chief justice aware that in the impeachment trial of President Johnson, Chief Justice Chase, as presiding officer, cast tie-breaking votes on both March 31 and April 2, 1868?"

For some voters, a single issue does much to spur them to either accept or reject a politician's entire platform. Where a candidate stands on hot-button topics, which can include gun control, climate change, or funding our military, matters. Unsurprisingly, abortion is one of the most divisive subjects carefully weighed by the engaged members of the electorate. The Democratic Party collectively favors abortion as a "woman's right to choose." To them, the issue is one that concerns the personal freedom of a woman. On the other hand, the Republican Party is largely against abortion. For the GOP, abortion is about the most fundamental of all rights: the right to life.

Masked anti-cop protesters flooded Grand Central Terminal at the start of rush hour Friday in an attempt to shut down the commuter hub — but the whole thing soon fizzled out. There were at least 12 arrests following a skirmish between cops and demonstrators, who refused to remove their masks despite repeated orders from police.
Further arrests were expected as protesters headed out of Grand Central and into Bedford-Stuyvesant Brooklyn, police sources said. Some of the agitators attempted to approach a nearby subway entrance, only to find it blocked off.

Income inequality between husbands and wives has decreased, suggesting some success in women's empowerment but also highlighting the cultural changes to which society has yet to adapt.Among married couples, wives now out-earn their husbands nearly 30% of the time, up from 15.9% in 1981, according to recently released data from the Census Bureau.“Men’s wages have stagnated in the past decade or so, in part because the economy has changed, moving from manufacturing jobs to more service-oriented professions,” said Sarah Jane Glynn, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, a left-of-center think tank.

Former Harvard Law Professor and noted author Alan Dershowitz had more bad news for Democrats on Friday night. When President Trump is acquitted next week he will no longer be impeached. It will be over. It will be removed from his record.Sorry, Nancy. The charade is over. Alan Dershowitz: Nancy Pelosi has pulled a real sharp one. She’s said even if he’s acquitted and vindicated he’s still impeached. That should not be how it is. Why? He did not have a fair trial. He was indicted. And what happens if a person is acquitted after indictment?

President Donald Trump appears to have added another name to the list of terrorists that his administration has killed as the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) reportedly launched a drone strike that killed the leader of Al Qaeda’s affiliate in Yemen. “The officials expressed confidence that the Qaeda leader, Qassim al-Rimi, was killed in a January airstrike in Yemen but were awaiting confirmation before making a public announcement,” The New York Times reported. “If confirmed, his death could represent a significant blow to the Qaeda affiliate, which remains one of the most potent branches of the terrorist group. Britain’s iconic Union Flag was ceremoniously lowered, folded, and taken away in the European Council building in Brussels ahead of Brexit at 11 p.m. on January 31st. Video of the history-making moment shows a sombre atmosphere as EU functionaries lower the flag of what had been one of the bloc’s top economic and military powers — powerful imagery symbolising the island nation setting out as a free-standing democracy once again and the diminishment of what is now a 27-member confederation.(Tweet/Video)
