The Slavery Story You Won't Learn In School

For historians of human enslavement -- and for black Africans more generally -- the recently concluded African Nations soccer cup revealed images of an ugliness that has roots in the Muslim world's trans-Saharan slave trade. As Senegal defeated host Morocco in the final, sections of the Moroccan crowd hurled racial insults at the Senegalese -- just as Algerian spectators had, earlier in the tournament, when their team was beaten by Nigeria. "Get the black slave," affronted Algerian soccer fans chanted.

Comments:

Fascinating and informative. This review of Justin Marozzi, Captives and Companions: A History of Slavery and the Slave Trade In the Islamic World, notes that substantially more persons were enslaved in Islamic countries than in the Western Hemisphere -- and for a much longer period of time. There is far less scholarship on slavery in Islamic countries only because scholars in those countries do not enjoy the same incentives and constitutional protections as their counterparts in the West.

President Donald Trump and his allies are launching a double-barreled U.S. census strategy that could eliminate a big electoral and federal funding mechanism for blue states: illegal immigrants. Missouri Attorney General Katherine Hanaway said her office is asking the courts to bar the federal government from counting immigrants living in the country illegally when determining congressional representation and federal funding, a move she argued should shift political power among the states for decades.

San Francisco's controversial reparations initiative, formalized and signed by Mayor Dan Lurie on December 23, 2025, creates a dedicated Reparations Fund (essentially, a new City Hall-administered bank account) to dole out restitution to the city's Black residents which were victims of slavery, redlining, urban renewal, War on Drugs, and other qualifiers. (snip) the program's design creates a stark dilemma: it compels non-eligible residents, including a significant number of the city's black African Americans, to actually subsidize reparations benefits they themselves cannot access (snip)

First there were parents flagged at school board meetings. Then it was Catholics who preferred the traditional Latin Mass who were targeted for scrutiny. Now, the CIA's retraction of nineteen "politicized" intel reports on Friday -- on the heels of the agency's self-critique last year on its assessment of Trump-Russia collusion in 2016 -- has put the sharpest light yet on the infection of political bias inside American spy agencies dating back to the Obama era. The politicized assessments -- many (snip) on DEI-related issues -- included pronouncements by the CIA about white women, motherhood, violent extremism, LGBT issues, and others well beyond the remit of the agency's mission.

The Supreme Court tariff decision about where the conventional wisdom said it would: The justices ruled 6-3 that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act doesn't give the President the sweeping authority the Trump administration claimed. That's not a political rebuke. It's a legal one, and a narrow one at that. (snip) The court did not say the president lacks authority to impose tariffs. It said this law doesn't authorize these tariffs. A bombshell X post that has racked up thousands of views in hours lays bare the mechanics of what many Nevadans have long suspected: the 2020 presidential election in the Silver State was compromised by a deliberate, pandemic-fueled overhaul of voting rules by state Democrats that opened the floodgates to widespread fraud in 2020 and subsequent elections. The post from @TheSCIF details a catastrophic surge in mail-in ballots -- from 6,300 in 2016 to 690,000 in 2020. Using the COVID-19 emergency as cover, Nevada Democrats unilaterally rammed through universal mail-in voting, unlimited ballot harvesting, unsecured and unmanned ballot boxes, extended ballot tabulation, and stripped away basic election safeguards.

A new FBI memo puts President Joe Biden in the thick of the Mar-a-Lago search of President Donald Trump's home. The memo puts an end to any rumors or partisan talking points; internal emails and memos outline briefings, coordination, and presidential approval before federal agents entered Trump's home. In January 2022, the National Archives and Records Administration received 15 boxes of presidential materials from Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate. Staff members found documents bearing classified markings, and requested additional materials from Trump's team. Archivist officials believed more records remained at the property. The dispute moved from paperwork to potential criminal exposure within a matter of months.

The California political machine is officially in panic mode. With the June 2026 primary fast approaching, a shocking new reality is setting in for the Golden State’s Democrat establishment: the very voting system they championed could shut them out of the Governor’s mansion completely. Unlike most states that hold partisan primaries, California dumps all candidates from all parties into one single primary election. The only rule? The top two vote-getters advance to the general election Party affiliation doesn’t matter That means: If Democrats split their vote among multiple candidates, and Republicans consolidate behind just one or two, it is entirely possible for two Republicans to advance to the November runoff, shutting Democrats out completely.

And now President Donald Trump wants accountability. On Saturday, Trump called on Netflix to fire Rice.
