Why I Stopped Being a Climate Catastrophist replies

Recently, in an exchange on X, my former colleague Tyler Norris observed that over the years, my views about climate risk have evolved substantially. Norris posted a screenshot of a page from the book Break Through, where Michael Shellenberger and I argued that if the world kept burning fossil fuels at current rates, catastrophe was virtually assured: (snip) Norris is right. I no longer believe this hyperbole. Yes, the world will continue to warm as long as we keep burning fossil fuels. (snip) But the rest of it? Not so much.
The Week Climate Catastrophism Lost Its Grip replies

Last week may go down as the moment when the climate narrative finally cracked. In climate parlance, a “tipping point” occurred. In the space of a few days, two events reached millions of people outside the usual scientific and media gatekeeping apparatus, and they both told the same heretical story: that the science of climate catastrophe isn’t nearly as settled, nor as dire, as we’ve been told.

Another "Superman" movie is about to be released . . . At the head of the endeavor is director James Gunn, perhaps best known for his work on the "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise . . . Which makes his decision to burn all the goodwill around his film to the ground right before its release a real headscratcher. During a recent interview with The Times of London, Gunn stated his movie is "about politics," citing the illegal immigration situation in the United States, and his answer to anyone who doesn't like that is "screw them."

President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social Saturday that the United States has completed what he described as a "very successful attack" on three nuclear sites in Iran: Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan. “All planes are now outside of Iran air space,” Trump wrote in the post. “A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow. All planes are safely on their way home. Congratulations to our great American Warriors. There is not another military in the World that could have done this.” He concluded his statement with a call for de-escalation: “NOW IS THE TIME FOR PEACE! Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger makes rare presidential endorsement replies

Arnold Schwarzenegger has made a rare presidential endorsement just six days before the 2024 election. The former Republican Governor of California - who refused to vote for Donald Trump in 2016 - announced that he will be voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. In the shocking endorsement, the actor wrote: 'I don’t really do endorsements. I’m not shy about sharing my views, but I hate politics and don’t trust most politicians.' Despite that, the Terminator star, 77, said that it's time for the country 'to move forward', and that 'the only way to do that is with Harris and Walz'.

Republican representative Liz Cheney (Wyo.) vowed to leave the GOP if former president Trump secures the party’s 2024 nomination and said she would start supporting Democrats to help prevent MAGA candidates from getting elected. “I’m going to make sure Donald Trump, I’m going to do everything I can to make sure he is not the nominee. And if he is the nominee, I won’t be a Republican,” Cheney said at The Texas Tribune festival Saturday.

The bell in the Independence Hall tower rang at 9 a.m., and Mark Sanford took a deep breath. He grabbed a giant check for “one trillion dollars,” stood next to a tiny wooden lectern, and asked me if I was ready for him to kick off a news conference announcing his bid to challenge President Donald Trump in the 2020 Republican primary. It didn’t really feel like a news conference. I was the only reporter there.

The Power of "Unplanned" Love Can Help Change People replies

My Uber driver a few mornings ago didn’t mind the relatively short ride we embarked on. “Every trip counts,” he said, “no one is more or less important than the other.” (snip)Every person has a story that can help others . . . I think that’s the power of the new movie Unplanned. It’s the story of a woman, Abby Johnson, and her desire to help women, to have a purpose, to do something good with her life. She believed she was doing that when she worked at a Planned Parenthood clinic, but realized the horrors of the abortion industry and resigned to become a pro-life activist.
